The More You Dig. The More You Find.
Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown podcast with your host, pastor Brandon, today, job, chapter 19. Today's title is we Live by what we Know. We Live by what we Know. In today's chapter we're going to see one of the best verses in the entire Old Testament, and I love this idea that while Job is in this pit of despair, he's lost almost everything except a complaining wife, and he's lost his health. He's now lost his friends. He's lost everything. And while he is in that mess, he still says one of the most profound things that if we can remember this when we're going through the darkest valley, man, there's joy there and I can't wait to share it with you. Speaker 1:Also, I want to encourage you with something, and that is that over the course of this particular year, we are moving, one chapter at a time, through this book called 12 Points that Show Christianity Is True. What we do is, on the 30th of the month, we're doing kind of a book discussion, and it's written by one of my mentors, dr Norman Geisler, and he's going on to be with the Lord right now, but just an amazing scholar, amazing philosopher, amazing man of God and you take these 12 points and by the time you're finished, you go from just the nature of truth all the way to being able to prove that Christianity is true. We're going through them one chapter at a time, and the way I'm doing this is I am assuming you've read the chapter and I just sit in a more just kind of laid back fashion and just talk about some of my takeaways from the chapter, and it's almost like a book club between me and you, and so I would encourage you to get the book you can get it on Amazon and let's read this together, and you can also go on YouTube and you look up 12 points that show Christianity is true, dr Norman Geisler, and you can see 12 different lectures he does on each part. If you want to dig in deeper, okay. Well, if you have your Bible and want to open it with me to Job, chapter 19,.
Speaker 1:This is one of my favorite verses in the entire Old Testament. Remember, this whole book is about trusting God's wisdom in suffering, and that's exactly what Job is having to do. Every area of his life that can be shaken is being shaken right now, and he's having to deal with these horrible friends and he's lost everything he has. He's lost his. I mean, everything possible is going wrong for Job, but in the deepest, darkest moment, he says one of the most beautiful things ever and I can't wait for us to read it together. So, if you're ready. Job, chapter 19, verse one Job is responding to the last chapter, when Billy the dad said some negative stuff, and he says this then Job spoke again.
Speaker 1:How long will you torture me? How long will you try to crush me with your words? You have already insulted me 10 times. You should be ashamed of treating me so badly, even if I had sinned. This is my concern, not yours. You think you're better than I am, using my humiliation as evidence of my sin. You think you're better than I am using my humiliation as evidence of my sin.
Speaker 1:But it is God who has wronged me, capturing me in his net. I cry out help, but no one answers me. I protest, but there is no justice. God has blocked my way so I cannot move. He has plunged my path into darkness and he has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown from my head. He has demolished me on every side and I am finished. He has uprooted my hope. Like a fallen tree, his fury burns against me. He counts me as his enemy. His troops advance and they build up roads to attack me and they camp all around my tent.
Speaker 1:My relatives stay far away and my friends have turned against me. My family is gone and my close friends have forgotten me. My servants and maids consider me a stranger and I'm like a foreigner to them. When I call my servant, he doesn't come. I have to plead with him. My breath is repulsive to my wife and I am rejected by my own family. Now pause. I didn't mean to laugh, but he's saying listen, I even got bad breath. You know you're having a bad day when everything's going wrong and on top of it. You got the dragon breath and there's nothing you can do about it. Okay, all right.
Speaker 1:Verse 18. Even young children despise me. When I stand up to speak, they turn their back on me. My close friends detest me. Those I love have turned against me. I have been reduced to skin and bones, and I have escaped death by the skin of my teeth. Have mercy on me, my friends. Have mercy, for the hand of God has struck me. Must you also persecute me like God does? Haven't you chewed me up enough? Oh that my words could be recorded. Oh that they could be inscribed on a monument carved with an iron chisel and filled with lead, engraved forever in the rock. Now, here it is. But as for me, I know my Redeemer lives and I will stand upon, and he will stand upon the earth at last. And after my body has decayed, yet in my body, I will see God. I will see him for myself. Yes, I will see him with my own eyes and I am overwhelmed at the thought. How dare you go on persecuting me, saying it's his own fault? You should fear punishment yourselves. Fear attitude deserves punishment. Then you will know that there indeed is a judgment. Wow.
Speaker 1:So what Job is saying is is he's saying guys, can you please be kinder to me? I'm suffering, I'm struggling. It feels like God is against me and if God is against me, everybody's against me and he's just. He's just talking about all the difficulty he's going through. But then, in the middle of it all, it's like the clouds part. He sees the sky and he says I want to read this again. But as for me, I know my Redeemer lives and he will stand upon the earth at last, after my body has decayed. Yet in my body I will see God. I will see him for myself and, yes, I will see him with my own eyes. And I am overwhelmed at the thought. What an encouragement when Job says I know how I feel, I know what I see, but what's most important is I know what I know. Can I tell you, if you're struggling right now and you're suffering with a sickness or some type of illness or a relationship issue or maybe a job situation just circumstances are not good Can I tell you? There's many times when we go through this when it seems like every single thing is stacked against us.
Speaker 1:Job had lost his family. He had lost his possessions, his security. He'd lost his health. He had lost his possessions, his security. He'd lost his health, he'd lost his relationship with his wife. Now he has people who are accusing him of stuff he didn't even do. Everything would cause him to want to quit. He talks about having so much anxiety in his life and all these different things, and so everything you can think of is pointing in the wrong direction. But he says I know something, and that thing that I know is what's keeping me floating. Well, what is it, joe? I know that God lives. I know that he's a redeemer, that he has a way of taking everything bad and making it good again. And he's saying and he will stand upon the earth at last. Other words, he's coming. My Redeemer lives and he's coming. Whether I see him in this life or I see him when I get to heaven, I know that at the end, I have a Redeemer. Do you know?
Speaker 1:There is a thought about the problem of evil, and the problem of evil is one of the most difficult problems to solve when it comes to trying to figure out apologetics, because there is a philosophical answer to the problem of evil. We can sit there and figure it out like a math problem, but then there's the real problem, which is the pain and suffering that we experience. Well, one of them, put forward by a guy named Augustine, says that in the end, god will bring justice to all. The problem is we live in finite reality, we live with the timeframe of being born and dying, but God sits outside of time. He is an infinite space, and so God has the ability to not be limited by time and space in our lives. And so, whether it's in our life or outside of our earthly life, god always brings justice.
Speaker 1:And that's what Job is saying, is he's saying I know my Redeemer lives, and even if it's after my body decays, I'm going to see God. I know that, whether it's in this life or in the life to come with him, god is going to make everything all right. And he says I am overwhelmed at that thought, and can I tell you, jesus made us many, many wonderful promises. He also made the promise that said in this life you will have trouble. But then he says but take heart, be encouraged, I have overcome the world. In other words, whether it's in this life or where we're headed, we get to heaven. Everyone receives justice.
Speaker 1:You can also do that when it comes to bad people that seem to get away with things in this life, they don't get away with it. They just don't see justice on this side of eternity. But for those who are going through hard times, job says and I would dare say none of us in here are going through more than poor Job. And he says, even in the midst of this, when I think about the goodness of God and what I know, it brings me hope. It doesn't mean everything's okay. It doesn't mean I don't have problems. It just means I know that my God is a redeemer. He has a way of bringing things to be new again. And whether I see it in this life or in the life to come, I know that ultimately justice is mine. And when I think about it I'm overwhelmed by the goodness of God.
Speaker 1:Your homework today is that, and that is, think about the goodness of God that, whether or not it happens in this life or when we get to heaven, god will make all things new. God hasn't forgotten you, god hasn't misplaced you and God hasn't given up, but rather he is working all things for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purpose. As a matter of fact, god's word says we can be confident that he who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. Your homework is instead of thinking about how bad things are, take a moment and think about the goodness of God and realize he is able to do exceedingly and abundantly.
Speaker 1:Above all you could ask or think, let's pray together, god. Thank you so much that you live, and because you live, we can face everything that tomorrow will throw at us, not because of how we feel, but because of what we know. I pray you'll open our eyes to see you in fresh and new ways, that we'll be encouraged to know that you are with us more than we can imagine, and it will cause us to walk in your presence with confidence, because we know that you are working. In Jesus' name, we pray amen and amen. God's word says in Job 1, verse 21,. I came naked from my mother's womb. I'll be naked when I leave. The Lord gave me what I had and Job is saying it all belongs to him and I trust him with it all. No-transcript.
