The More You Dig. The More You Find.

Speaker 1:

Hello everyone, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown podcast with your host, pastor Brandon, today, Hebrews, chapter 3, and today's title is Jesus is Better Than Moe. Jesus is better than Moe, and I'm not talking about Larry Moe and Curly, I'm talking about Moe. As in Moses, the writer of Hebrews is going to say something extremely controversial for that time, but he means it and he's got a good point. We're going to get all that in just a moment. But, as always, if you like what we're doing here, make sure you like, share and subscribe to YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you leave us a five-star review to my podcast listeners. You will always and forever be my favorites and, as always, we gather together at the Bible Breakdown Discussion Group on Facebook Because, man, the more we dig, the more we find, and they do an amazing job there.

Speaker 1:

Well, as always, I want to kind of catch you up as you open your Bibles with me to Hebrews, chapter 3. And, just as a reminder, there's so much great stuff in the book of Hebrews that we just are not going to have an opportunity to cover. So make sure you are going to the Bible Breakdown Discussion on Facebook and we are slowly building an archive at thebiblebreakdowncom and as we get more and more resources, we're going to add all of that there as well. There's just no way to cover all the things, but one of the things is remember that the overall theme of Hebrews is Jesus is better. He's better than the law. He's better than angels, he's just better. Yesterday we talked about how he was better at understanding what suffering is like. Well, today is a big deal, because remember, as I was telling you that we don't exactly know who wrote this, but I think that it was very possible that this might have been the message that Paul would preach to Hebrew, the Jewish people, when he'd go to a synagogue, and maybe Luke wrote it down, but we don't know that for sure. That's just me guessing. But if that's the case, then if Paul went into a synagogue and he said what he's going to say today, that's why they would beat him up all the time, because in the Jewish world remember the Jewish world they don't believe in Jesus. Their greatest hero, right underneath Yahweh, is Moses, because Moses was the person that God raised up in order to set the nation free.

Speaker 1:

As a matter of fact, some Jewish commentators think that one of the reasons why the Bible said that Moses died and God buried his body. Like they don't know to this day where Moses is buried is because there would have been a huge temptation to bring Moses and worship him and as you read through the Old Testament, those jokers would be worshiping everything anyway, you know. So it would have been like super easy for them to do that. And so I mean Moses is just it. I mean he is awesome, and what the writer of Hebrews is going to be like as great as you think Moses is, mo is nowhere near as cool as Jesus, and I think that is an amazing thing. But there's something also amazing in what he has to say about it. So let's read this together and let's see what God's Word has to say about how Jesus is better than Mo, you ready.

Speaker 1:

Verse 1 says this with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus, whom we declare to be God's messenger and high priest, for he was faithful to God who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully when he was entrusted with God's entire house. In other words, moses led the entire nation out, and he did that, and he didn't set himself up as God. He led them as a steward of God's people, and he's saying no matter how cool Moses was, jesus is even better. Verse 3, but Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a house deserves far more praise than the house itself, for every house has a builder, but the one who built everything is God. So in other words, he's saying Mo was awesome, but God's even more awesome and Jesus is God. Verse 5, moses was certainly faithful in God's house as a servant. His work was an illustration of the truths God would reveal later. But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God's entire house, and we are God's house if we keep our courage and remain confident in the hope of Christ.

Speaker 1:

Verse 7, saw my miracles for 40 years, so I was angry with them and I said their hearts will always turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them. So in my anger I took an oath that they will never enter my place of rest. I want to pause for a second and explain to you what's been going on and what's going to continue to happen. I should have told you this at the beginning of chapter one, because the writer of Hebrews is talking to people who have a good grasp on the Old Testament and they're trying to understand who Jesus is.

Speaker 1:

The writer of Hebrews is going to use a lot of Old Testament scripture. This is one reason why it's so important to have a paper Bible, because, depending on the type of Bible you have, you'll probably see how the indentions are a little bit different and you'll see how the person who's writing this is quoting from the Old Testament. This is the people who produced the Bible for you are letting you know when it's Old Testament, new Testament, that way you can know. And what he just did is he quoted from the Old Testament in a moment when what the book of Psalms was saying is he was saying hey, make sure you understand that it was God who gave you this opportunity, so make sure you do it. Okay, so I'm going to try to remind us every time we read something in the Old Testament, just to remind us that the writer of Hebrews is saying, just like you heard this Jesus is the fulfillment. Okay, all right, let's keep going.

Speaker 1:

Verse 12 says this be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Okay, all right, let's keep going. Verse 12 says this Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters, make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. You must warn each other every day, while it is still today, so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, remember what it says. Here's an Old Testament verse Today, when you hear his voice, don't harden your hearts as you did when they rebelled.

Speaker 1:

And who is it who rebelled against God, even though they heard his voice? Wasn't it the people Moses led out of Egypt and who made God angry for 40 years? Wasn't it the people who sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness? And to whom was God speaking when he took an oath that they would never enter his rest? Wasn't it the people who disobeyed him? So we see that because of their unbelief, they were not able to enter his rest.

Speaker 1:

So, in other words, what the writer of Hebrews is saying is man, moe was a great guy. Moe did the best he could, but Moe was not able to forgive their sin. He was able to lead them in the right direction, but ultimately he wasn't able to forgive them. But God Jesus came, and our job is to not be perfect. We're going to try, but we're going to fail. Our job is to remain faithful to the end, to not let go of Christ, to trust God firmly and believe in him, and God does the rest. That's why I'm saying that's why Mo was great Jesus is better and can I tell you, no matter what you hold on to in life, there's going to be people in your life that you enjoy. There's people in your life that mean a lot to you. No matter what it is, jesus is better.

Speaker 1:

And that's the thing that the writer of Hebrews is wanting to say is to think about the great things that people have done and the great ways they have led you and then realize Jesus is even better than that. Can I tell you, it's something special to realize we can't earn salvation. All we can do is receive it and stay faithful to it. But then one of the things is when our faith begins to fail, god still remains faithful because he's better. All Moses could do is to lead them, try to lead them to the promised land. Ultimately, he couldn't get them there. Jesus can lead us all the way through if we'll keep on being faithful to him. And even then we realize, well, we're not faithful. God is still faithful, can I tell you, no matter who you can think of in your life, can I tell you, no matter who you can think of in your life, think of the greatest person you can think of. Jesus is still better and that Jesus loves you.

Speaker 1:

Let me pray for us today. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you that you are better than we can imagine. And God, as we are walking through the book of Hebrews and as the writer of the book of Hebrews is continuing to build this case of who you are, one brick at a time, I pray, god, that this brick, the fact that you are better than even Moses in the Old Testament, will remind us that this great God loves us. I'm thankful for that. Today, In Jesus' name, we pray Amen. And what God's Word says in Hebrews, chapter 12, verse 1, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up, and let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus. He's the author and the perfecter of our faith. Jesus is better. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Hebrews, chapter 4.
