The More You Dig. The More You Find.
Hello everybody, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown podcast with your host, pastor Brandon, today. Isaiah, chapter 39, and I just got the title. You Idiot, you just? Ah, hezekiah, I love you, my friend, you're an idiot. Okay, and listen, that's not trying to be disrespectful. Hezekiah is awesome. He's also dead, so it doesn't really matter anymore. But he just makes a real bad, real bad mistake, and I think all of us can be guilty of making mistakes sometimes, and we're going to get into it in just a moment.
Speaker 1:But, as always, if you like what we're doing here, make sure you like, share and subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you're leaving us a five-star review on the podcast it really does help and make sure you go into the Bible breakdown discussion, because I'm going to tell you something the more we dig, the more we find, and I love this idea of us building a community that's based on just knowing God more by knowing his word. Isn't that just amazing? We don't rally around anything else. We rally around knowing God and knowing his word. You want to go somewhere else. You want to go somewhere to find about current events and all that kind of stuff. That is awesome. That's amazing. You can find out about college football somewhere else. You want to go somewhere to find out about current events and all that kind of stuff. That is awesome. That's amazing. You can find out about college football somewhere else. We focus in on God's word, and it's awesome. It's awesome.
Speaker 1:So make sure you open up your Bible with me to Isaiah, chapter 39. And remember, the overall goal of Isaiah is God, our salvation. God helps us, but sometimes, man, we need help from ourselves, right? And so the past few chapters have been all about Hezekiah and about the nation of Israel receiving that salvation from the Lord. Right? Isaiah 36 and 37 was about how Assyria has finally arrived and God delivers them and then they go away. They're gone. Now. Isaiah 38 is how, then Hezekiah has a personal issue. He's sick, he's going to die. So the first issue was out there and God delivered them. Then the second one was closer to home on the inside, and God delivered them. And now it's going to get even closer to home. It's going to be dealing with some pride issue, because now Babylon is on the way and that's the next big baddie that's even bigger than Assyria. That's headed that way, and Assyria was kind of close to Israel. Babylon's coming from modern day Iraq, so a long way away, and now they're coming across the desert to take over things as well. Are you ready? Isaiah, chapter 39. We're going to see what Hezekiah who I love man. He's acting a fool right now. Let's see what he does you ready?
Speaker 1:Verse one says this soon after this, after Hezekiah was healed by God, meladoc Baladon, son of Baladon, king of Babylon, sent Hezekiah his best wishes and a gift. He had heard that Hezekiah had been very sick and that he had recovered. Hezekiah was delighted with the Babylonian invoice and showed them everything in his treasure houses the silver, the gold, the spices and the aromic oils. He also took them to see his armory and showed them everything in his royal treasuries. There was nothing in the palace or kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.
Speaker 1:Oh, pause for a moment. Okay, imagine, imagine somebody moved into your neighborhood and you knew they were a violent ex-con. They just got out of prison. They were a violent gang member, horrible person, they were horrible. And they come over to your house with a housewarming gift hey, I'm new to the area. I wanted to bring you some apples, I don't know whatever they bring you and you go. You know what I'm so glad you're here. Come on in my house. Let me show you my safe, where I keep all my money. And oh, by the way, here's the combination of my safe. Look, over, here is where I keep all my guns, and this is how you can get into them so that I can't do anything with it If you were to ever want to. Hey, over, here is where all my wife's jewelry is. You just show these people, who were known for stealing stuff, where all your stuff is. That's what Hezekiah is doing. And so when they leave, look what happens.
Speaker 1:Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked him what do those men want? Where were they from? Hezekiah said Well, they came from the distant land of Babylon. Wait a minute. What did they see in your palace, isaiah? Oh, they saw everything. Hezekiah replied I showed them everything. I own all my royal treasuries. Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah Listen to this message from the Lord of heaven's armies the time is coming when everything in your palace, all your treasures stored up by your ancestors until now, will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the Lord. Some of your very own sons will be taken away into exile. They will become Pause. If you don't know what that means when it says they will become eunuchs, ask another podcaster.
Speaker 1:Verse 8. Oh, this message you have given me from the Lord is good, for the king was thinking at least there will be peace and security during my lifetime. Oh, hezekiah, I love you. But, wow, the dangers of pride and the importance of humility. This chapter reminds us to use wisdom in what we share and consider the long-term consequences of our actions. That's the big idea of this.
Speaker 1:Hezekiah was being prideful because he wanted to show off. He knew who Babylon was. He knew they were a big kingdom far away and he wanted to flex and show them how awesome he was, not realizing just how powerful they were and that this was stupid. And so what happens is fast forward, babylon sees how rich Israel is and they say I want something. And so they come and they over and they destroy everything, and that's why the nation of Israel goes into 70 years of captivity. It's because of Babylon, because of the fact well, number one, because of the fact that Israel continues to not repent to God. But it starts with Hezekiah, who's being prideful and sharing the wrong things with the wrong people. Can I tell you.
Speaker 1:It is so important that we have spiritual brothers and sisters that we can do life with, that we can talk to, that we can share our hearts with, but not everybody who calls themselves a Christian is worthy of your trust. I'm going to say that again Not everybody who is a Christian is worthy of your trust. It is important that you trust people. I know there's probably been times in the past when you've trusted people and they have burned those bridges and they've hurt your trust. The problem with building walls to keep people out is that they also keep you in, and those walls that you have built to keep you protected have become your prison. Walls that you have built to keep you protected have become your prison. So it's so very important to break down those walls and to trust people again, but with wisdom. With wisdom to pray and ask God to give you wisdom and to learn how to put proper boundaries and to trust some people and to not trust others. What Hezekiah should have done is been kind to these people. Thank you for the gift, thank you for coming See ya.
Speaker 1:Be kind, be cordial, but don't open up the deepest things that you have to them, but then to the right people do that, and I get that that can be very tricky. We live in a culture and a generation of disposable relationships where we actually say that we friend people by clicking a button on social media. That's not what true friends really are. True friends are people that it takes time to develop and that can be very, very difficult. One of the reasons why we like having life groups at Real Life Church is it gives you an opportunity to get around people and to get to know people and to do life together, and I don't expect people to become great friends after one semester at Life Group, but over a few semesters in Life Group and seeing people in different situations, you become friends so that you can spiritually open up your armory.
Speaker 1:Show people your weak spots, show people what's important to you so you can pray for one another, hold each other accountable, but it's so very important that you be careful to show yourself to some and to be careful with others. Here's my question for you today Are there people that are not following God, that you've let in too far in your life and so now they manipulate you, they take advantage of you, they're not trying to help you with finding your best and all that and you need to put a boundary in your life. On the other side, are you one of those people that have been hurt because you've let people in in the past and they've hurt you and now you find yourself all alone? Is it time to trust again?
Speaker 1:Can I encourage you to start with coming to church regularly, getting around the people of God and just remembering what it's like to be part of a spiritual community. Then try a life group Get around conversation and get around people and just develop those casual relationships that they can grow into friendships. But you can't do life alone. But you got to do life with the right people and if you pray and if you ask God to surround you with the right people and if you're patient, god always will. Let me pray for you, god.
Speaker 1:Thank you so much for today. Thank you, god, that you know the difficulty in relationship, that it's not easy and that it can take a long time to develop strong relationships. I that it's not easy and that it can take a long time to develop strong relationships. I pray number one, god, that you will open our eyes to see the people around us that we can truly do life with, but then also, god, you'll open up our eyes to see those who, because of a broken place in their life or because of a hurt that they have, we need to put up healthy boundaries. Give us wisdom to see both. In Jesus' name, we pray, amen. Amen. God's word says in Isaiah, chapter 12, verse 2, say it with me. God has come to save me. I will trust in him and not be afraid. The Lord, god, is my strength and my song. He has given me the victory. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow. For Isaiah, chapter 40.
