All right, well, if you have your Bibles when open up with us to Jeremiah, chapter 46, remember the overall goal of Jeremiah is over the course of his ministry and over his life. He's constantly talking about a future and a hope. God brings light in darkness and God is very active in all of this. He's not passive. He's trying to call the nation back to him, even though darkness is coming. All the bad things are coming. And now what we're going to see in chapter 46 is this continual theme of bad things are coming, but there's still hope. Bad things are coming, but there's still hope. And so what's going to happen is is in this particular chapter, god is going to pronounce judgment on the nation of Egypt and some other things, and he's going to say get ready for battle. It's about to go down. Bad things are going to happen, but at the same time, there's still hope on the other side of the pain. So let's read this together and let's see what god's word has to say to us today. You ready?
Speaker 1:Chapter 46, verse 1, says this the following messages were given to jeremiah, the prophet from the lord, concerning foreign nations. So he's gonna just pick off one nation after another. Okay, you ready, here go. Here's the one about Egypt. This message was concerning Egypt and it was given in the fourth year of the reign of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, on the occasion of the Battle of Carchemish, when Pharaoh Necho, king of Egypt, and his army were defeated beside the Euphrates River by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.
Speaker 1:Prepare your shields and advance into battle. Harness the horses and mount the stallions. Take your positions and put on your helmets. Sharpen your spears and prepare your armor, but what do I see? The Egyptian army flees in terror. The bravest of its fighting men run without a backwards glance and they terrorize at every turn, says the Lord. They are terrorized at every turn.
Speaker 1:Verse 6,. The swiftest runners cannot flee. The mightiest warriors cannot escape. By the Euphrates River to the north, they stumble and fall. Who is this rising like the Nile at flood time, overflowing all the land? It is the Egyptian army overflowing all the land, boasting that it will cover the earth like a flood, destroying cities and their people.
Speaker 1:Charge your horses and chariots, attack you mighty warriors of Egypt. Come all you allies from Ethiopia, libya and the land of Israel, lydia, and who are skilled with a shield and bow, for this is the day of the Lord, the Lord of heaven's armies, a day of vengeance on his enemies. The sword will devour until it is satisfied, yes, until it is drunk with your blood. The Lord, the Lord of heaven's armies, will receive a sacrifice today in the north country, beside the Euphrates River. Go up to Gilead to get medicine, o virgin daughter of Egypt, but your many treatments will bring you no healing. The nations have heard of your shame. The earth is filled with your cries of despair. Your mightiest warriors will run into each other and fall down together. Warriors will run into each other and fall down together.
Speaker 1:Then the Lord gave the prophet Jeremiah this great message about King Nebuchadnezzar's plan to attack Egypt. Shout it out in Egypt, publish it in the cities of Migdal, memphis and Tephanies. Mobilize for battle, for the sword will devour everyone around you. Why have your warriors fallen? They cannot stand, for the Lord has knocked them down. They stumble and fall over each other and they say among themselves come, let's go back to our own people, the land of our birth, let's get away from the sword of the enemy. They will say Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, is a loud mouth who missed his opportunity as surely as I live, says the king, whose name is the Lord of Heaven's armies. One is coming against Egypt, who is as tall as Mount Tabor or as Mount Carmel by the sea. Pack up, get ready to leave for exile, you, citizens of Egypt. The city of Memphis will be destroyed without a single inhabitant. Egypt is as sleek and as a beautiful heifer, but a horsefly from the north is on its way. Egypt's mercenaries have become like a fattened calf. They too will turn and run for.
Speaker 1:It is a day of great disaster for Egypt, a time of great punishment. Silent as a serpent, gliding away, the invading army marches in. They come against her with axes, like swordsmen. They will cut down her people like trees, says the Lord, for they are more numerous than locusts. Egypt will be humiliated. She will be handed over to people from the north.
Speaker 1:The Lord of heaven's armies, the God of Israel, says. I will punish Ammon, the god of thieves, and all the other gods of Egypt. I will punish its rulers, and Pharaoh too, and all who trust in him. I will hand them over to those who want them killed, to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and his army. But afterward the land will recover from the ravages of war. I, the Lord, have spoken, but here we go, verse 27.
Speaker 1:But do not be afraid, jacob my servant. Do not be dismayed, israel, for I will bring you home again from distant lands and your children will return from their exile. Israel will return to a life of peace and quiet and no one will terrorize them. Do not be afraid, jacob, my servant, for I am with you, says the Lord. I will completely destroy the nations to which I have exiled you, but I will not completely destroy you. I will discipline you, but with justice. I cannot let you go unpunished. Wow, there's a lot there.
Speaker 1:But the bottom line is, is trouble's coming? Trouble's coming to the nation of Egypt and if you remember from the past couple of chapters, that's where some of these people have fled to to get away from Nebuchadnezzar, and they're still not worshiping God. They're still not turning their lives over to God and they're still not worshiping God. They're still not turning their lives over to God and God is warning them. Listen, I'm going to destroy this nation that you went to hide in. It's going to get bad, but I'm not going to give up on you. So don't give up yourself. Don't be afraid. I'm going to be with you. And there's times when bad things are going to happen.
Speaker 1:But the thing is is, even in pain, god is still working in our lives, and that's important. When we're in the middle of pain, when we're looking at somebody else going through something, it's easy to throw that out there. Hey man, even when you're going through a bad time and there's bad all around you and you seem to be suffering for somebody else's problem, it's going to be okay, it's fine. That's easy to say when it's not you, but when you're the one who gets laid off because your boss was embezzling money and took the whole company down. That's hard.
Speaker 1:When you are going through a divorce because your spouse was unfaithful and they don't want to be married to you anymore, that's hard. That's hard when you were having to rethink your empty nester years because you have a child who didn't honor their body and didn't honor their marriage, and now they have a child themselves and you need to step in and be a parent slash grandparent. Now you're having to rethink everything. That's hard. When you have a spouse who gets sick and you're now having to work extra hours in order to pay those extra doctor bills and then come home and be a nurse and you're not good at it and you don't want to do it, but you are going to do it, but you're sitting there going. I didn't ask for that.
Speaker 1:That's hard, and what God's word is saying is is there are times when we've brought these things on ourself, right, and he's saying I will discipline you, but I'll do it with justice, and so there needs to be space for that. There's also times when bad things have happened to us that we didn't do anything with. We did not do those things, but we're suffering consequences based on somebody else's stupid decisions or based on something that neither us nor the other person had anything to do with. There's all these variables that go into this thing called life. So I just want to say to everyone if you're going through a bad season because of your own bad decisions, don't give up, because even in pain, there is hope.
Speaker 1:If you're going through a bad season because of something that happened to somebody else and it wasn't their fault either, but you're experiencing the consequences along with them, don't give up. There is pain, but there's also hope. And if you are experiencing difficult times because of the bad decisions of others and you're the innocent party, don't give up. Bad things happen to good people, but God is with you more than you realize, and what he would say maybe to you is what he said to Jacob Do not be afraid, do not be dismayed. I will bring you home again. I will return you to a life of peace and quiet. Do not be afraid. Let's pray together right now.
Speaker 1:God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, god, that, no matter how we have found ourselves in some of these moments, you are with us. So, lord, I pray for the one who is experiencing the byproduct of bad decisions. I pray, lord, that you will help them, lord, to see that repentance and turning back toward you is the best thing they could do. There's no shame in it, there's only joy there. Lord, I pray for those who are experiencing the consequences of someone else's bad decision. That you'll help them, lord, to find the grace to walk in the beginning of forgiveness and to realize that even in those situations, you were there. And, lord, for those who were experiencing the consequences of something that was nobody's fault, but it happened, help them, lord, not to get bitter in their soul but to realize that even there you are with them. I thank you for all things. In Jesus' name, we pray Amen. And well, don't forget. God's word says in Jeremiah, chapter 29, verse 13,. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. I love you.
