The Bible Breakdown: Daily Bible Reading
Revelation 19: Jesus is the Conquering Hero
Revelation 19 unveils a striking portrait of Jesus that many Christians overlook - not just the gentle Lamb who was slain, but the victorious Conquering Hero who brings ultimate justice. This powerful chapter reveals Christ riding on a white horse, eyes blazing like fire, crowned with many crowns, and defeating His enemies with merely a word from His mouth.
Pastor Brandon explains how this vision would have resonated with the early church, persecuted under Roman rule and pressured to worship the emperor alongside Jesus. Rather than being primarily about future events, Revelation delivered a timely, empowering message to suffering believers: stay faithful, for your King will triumph over every opposition. Rome may seem invincible, but it stands nothing compared to God.
The chapter climaxes with Jesus making His triumphant return, accompanied by the armies of heaven. His victory isn't even a contest - He speaks, and His enemies fall. This reveals something profound about Christ's authority and power that should transform how we face our own battles today. If our King has already declared victory, we can walk with confidence through any challenge.
Looking beyond denominational differences about rapture timing or millennial reign interpretations, Pastor Brandon highlights what all Christians can agree on - Jesus is returning, every eye will see Him, and every knee will bow. We can balance our eager anticipation with compassion for those not yet in the faith, holding both "Come quickly, Lord" and "Save my loved ones first" in our hearts simultaneously.
Whether you're facing seemingly impossible opposition or simply need renewed hope, this exploration of Christ as Conquering Hero will strengthen your faith. The More We Dig. The More We Find.
Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, pastor Brandon, today, revelation, chapter 19. Today's title is Jesus is the Conquering Hero. Jesus is the Conquering Hero. I want to tell you that when we first started this idea of what would it look like to go through the Bible one chapter at a time, there were certain chapters in books of the Bible that I was not looking forward to Like. For instance, I was not looking forward to Song of Solomon. I just wasn't all right and I wasn't looking forward to other things. I was looking forward to this chapter, that one day you and I would walk through the Bible and we'd walk through all the different things and we would get to this one. It's one of my favorite chapters because this shows who our king really is, and we have to be careful because, yes, he is the lamb that was slain, he was the perfect sacrifice, he is our savior, but he's also our lord, our king, our general and our conquering hero, and I cannot wait to get into that. So, if you have your bibles, open up with me quickly to revelation 19.
Speaker 1:While you're doing, as always, make sure you take just a moment to like, share, subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Let us know how you're engaging with God's Word.
Speaker 1:And here's a question for you, and that is this have you ever heard the book of Revelation talked about in this way? I know that for many of us, we look at the book of Revelation and it's because we've been taught this and I'm not against this at all we look at the book of Revelation as something that hasn't happened yet, and so people spend all this time trying to talk about how they can see helicopters and all these different things in the book of Revelation, and I think it's endlessly fascinating. But at the same time, I think that it is even more fascinating to put it in the context of the time, and so we're going to leave other wonderful podcasts to talk about the future and all that good stuff, but I think it is endlessly fascinating to remember the central message to the early church, and that is this that Jesus wins, jesus wins. This was all about this early church that was dealing with all this different pressure coming from the Roman empire, as they were being being really challenged to worship the emperor as God. And then there was all this coming from the Judaizers and then other places, and really one of the main things was they didn't mind that they worshiped Jesus. They just didn't want them to worship just Jesus. They wanted them to be polytheistic and to mainly worship the emperor. But, as you know, jesus stands alone, and so the issue with the early church was they were saying no, we are not going to worship anything other than Jesus, and so they were being persecuted. And so the book of Revelation is a vision that John the apostle had while he was in prison on the Isle of Patmos for serving Jesus, and the overall goal is Jesus wins. And this is where we see, in chapter 19, the culmination of all this. Now, to remember, jesus has been slowly taking back everything that appeared as though belonged to the enemy. The early church is being told you stay faithful and watch what I'm doing. And then, in chapter 17, he finally cast judgment on Rome, this impossible looking enemy. And then chapter 18, yesterday. It talks about how all the people thought that Rome was invincible. But it stands nothing compared to God. And then we have chapter 19. And here's one thing I will say that for people who look at the book of Revelation and there's so many different subjective ideas about Revelation, but what most people who look at it say is whereas you know, 4 through 18 is very possible. Speaking about, you know present but future events Most scholars all believe that the book of Revelation, chapter 19, is both talking about the spiritual victory of the early church but also the second coming of Christ.
Speaker 1:And we get to the end of our chapter. We're going to do something we said we weren't going to do and we're going to dive a little bit into some of the end times doctrine. So if you're ready, chapter 19, verse one says this after this, I heard what sounded like a vast crowd in heaven shouting Praise the Lord. And remember, by the way, every time you see capital L-O-R-D. It is a respectful way to say Yahweh, so say it again Praise Yahweh. Salvation and glory and power belong to our God. His judgments are true and just. He has punished the great prostitute, rome, who corrupted the earth with her immorality. She has avenged the murderer of his servants. And again their voices rang out praise Yahweh. The smoke from the city ascends forever and ever. And here we go. Then the 24 elders boy, they'd be falling down again.
Speaker 1:The 24 elders and the four living beings fell down in worship the god who was sitting on the throne, and they cried amen, praise yahweh. And from the throne came a voice that said praise our god, all his servants, all who fear him, from least to the greatest. Then I heard again the sound, what sounded like the shout of a vast crowd, or the roar of a mighty ocean waves, or the crash of loud thunder. Praise Yahweh, for the Lord our God, the Almighty reigns. Let us be glad and rejoice and let us give honor to him, for the time has come for the wedding feast of the Lamb, and his bride has prepared herself. She has given the finest of pure white linen to wear. The fine linen represents the good deeds of God's holy people. And the angel said to me write this blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the lamb. And he said these are true words that come from God. Then I fell at his feet to worship, but he said no, no, don't worship me. I am a servant of God, just like you and your brothers and sisters who testify about their faith in Jesus. Worship only God, For the essence of prophecy is to give a clear witness for Jesus.
Speaker 1:Then I saw heaven opened and a white horse was standing there. And the rider's name was fateful and true, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. That's Jesus, verse 12. His eyes were like a flame of fire Remember Revelation 1? And on his head were many crowns. In other words, he is victorious over all. His name was written, a name was written on him that no one understood except himself. I'll explain that in a minute. And he wore a robe dipped in blood and his title was the Word of God from John 1, the Logos, verse 14,.
Speaker 1:And the armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses. From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations and he will rule them with a rod of iron and he will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a wine press. And on his robe, at his thigh, was written the title King of all Kings and Lord of all Lords. Then I saw an angel standing in the sun shouting to the vultures flying in the sky come, gather together for a great banquet God has prepared. That's gross because vultures, you know, they feed on dead bodies Verse 18,. Come and eat the flesh of kings and generals and strong warriors whose horses are their horses and riders, and all humanity, both free and slaves, small and great. Then I saw the beast and the kings of the world and their armies gathered together to fight against the one sitting on the horse and his army. And the beast was captured and with him the false prophet who did mighty miracles on behalf of the beast, and the miracles that deceived all who had accepted the mark of the beast and who worshipped his statue. Both the beast and the false prophet were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. Their entire army was killed by the sharp sword that came from the mouth of the one riding on the white horse, and the vultures all gorts themselves on the dead bodies. So gross and so awesome.
Speaker 1:Now, I love this so much, and so we're going to dive into this just a little bit. First of all, remember a lot of this is illusion, metaphor, and so I want to tell you what he was saying when he was describing Jesus. I want to read this again. I actually want to pull it back up on the screen if you're watching on the YouTubes. Otherwise, just listen.
Speaker 1:Verse 11 says and I saw heaven open and a white horse, which symbolized authority and purity and strength, was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, and he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. His eyes were a flame of fire and on his head were many crowns and his name was written with no one understood but himself. He wore a robe dipped in blood and his title was the word of God and the armies of heaven followed him on white horses. Now what he's saying is he's using a lot of metaphor, talking about a white horse, faithful and true.
Speaker 1:Let's be honest Is it possible that when Jesus comes we're going to talk about that in a second Is it possible that he's going to come riding on a created being called a horse? Is that true? Yeah, maybe Absolutely, but the thing is, he's also riding to the early church, and what would happen is is the Black Prince, in other words, the Crown Prince many times, would lead the armies into battle. And so what would be happening is is this was the guy who had all the fame, who had all the prestige. He was the one, because if I see him going into battle, then I have courage too, right. And so what he is saying is what the people have understood.
Speaker 1:With all the metaphors and looking at the stuff in the Old Testament, this is what he's saying. He's saying I saw Jesus standing at the head of an impossible to beat army. His eyes were focused and full of authority, and on his head was the authority of all the kings that have ever gone before, and he stood alone by himself. No one could equal him. He was unique among all things that had ever been, because he is an uncreated being. He is God. He was the one who died and rose again for us. He is God, the manifestation of all of the word of God. That's what he was saying. As he was saying, it was indescribable, but I'll do the best I can to say that was my king. And then we see how he came. And it wasn't even a fight. It said that the enemies of God gathered, but they had nothing. I mean, they just completely fell apart. And this is where I wanna get just a moment because I can't help myself. This is one of the most amazing things that we, as Christians, have to look forward to Now.
Speaker 1:There are different views on how Jesus comes, and I would give you all of the titles for it, but it would get us too far in the weeds. But here's the things. Some people say that Jesus came again. He came the first time, died on a cross, rose again. He is reigning spiritually in heaven and then one day, at the end of time, he comes again. It's called the second coming of Christ. Then, a little less than a hundred years ago, there were some people who came along who said, actually, the way I read this, jesus will have a second coming, but he's not going to let his church go through this tribulation, and so before that, there is going to be a secret catching away called the rapture, and that the rapture will be a separate event from the second coming, seven years beforehand. So there'll be a secret catching away of his people. There'll be seven years of tribulation, according to the book of Daniel, and then, at the book of Daniel, and then at the end of it, revelation 19 happens and the second coming of Christ comes and the people who are raptured are now the armies of God and they walk into victory.
Speaker 1:There's another belief that says that, yes, jesus did rise again, but he is not reigning in heaven spiritually. He is reigning, yes, but at the same time, that is not what the millennial reign is, that? The millennial reign we're gonna talk about it tomorrow the millennial reign of Christ is 1,000 years of peace. That's in the future, but the rapture of the church and the second coming actually happened at the same time, in chapter 19. So, can you see, there's all these different views, but the one thing that all the different major views of eschatology, study of the end times, have in common is this chapter and that is this Jesus is coming again.
Speaker 1:Now can I tell you, I don't know how he's going to come. I don't know exactly what it's going to look like. Jesus himself said no one's going to know the day or the hour. Only my Father in heaven knows the day or the hour. That is his part of this plan. That's what he's going to do and, once again, as I've also told you in earlier chapters, I believe that prophecy works in such a way that it confirms what Christ has done. That prophecy works best, that it shows us that we can trust God.
Speaker 1:And then, after it is passed, we look back and go oh, that makes sense. So I think that we're not going to fully understand this part of the book of Revelation until after it happens and then go oh well, there you go. So then, what do we do with it? And that is this have endless amounts of hope that Jesus is our conquering hero and that one day and I don't know when that day is going to be I hope it is so very soon, but can I be honest with you, not too soon, because I still have friends and family that I want to go with me when he comes. Now, understand the balance I'm saying here I want Jesus to come back as soon as he wants to, but if he wants to hold off a few more days, I'm not mad at him, because man back as soon as he wants to, but if he wants to hold off a few more days, I'm not mad at him, because, man, I got a few people I'm still praying for and I know you do too and I want them to receive the goodness of God.
Speaker 1:But the reality is he's coming, jesus is coming. Jesus is coming and every eye is going to see him on that day, and every knee is going to bow, every tongue is going to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. And what's amazing is, even in the moment as we saw all of this, all of these people were lining up. They thought that they were going to do something, but the entire army was killed by the sharp sword that came from the mouth of the one riding on the white horse. In other words, jesus never has to actually lift a weapon. Jesus never fires a single strike. He speaks and they are defeated.
Speaker 1:I got no idea what he's going to say, but it don't really matter what he's going to say, but it don't really matter. Maybe he's going to say peace, be still. That's how he quieted the storms, and so maybe he will quiet the chaos with peace, be still. So. What can we learn from this in our hearts today? Maybe the lord wants to speak to us and to say and to say peace, be still. Be still your worrying, be still your fear, be still your anxiety. I am on my way.
Speaker 1:So, whether I come today, whether I come in 20 years, whether I come in 100 years, I am coming and every eye will see me. Your job is to be faithful. That's what the early church would have heard. My king is coming. My king has already declared victory. Therefore, I can walk into every day with my head held high because I am on the winning team. And you may not see him yet, but just wait, because my king is on the way. Let's pray together right now, god, thank you so much for today. Thank you, god, that your word is trustworthy. It is true, it is full of hope. Jesus, you win, you make all things new and you are coming soon, and so we trust you. Today, in Jesus name, we pray Amen, amen. What God's word says in Revelation 1, verse 7, it says look, he is coming in the clouds of heaven and everyone will see him. My prayer is that you will long to see God more than ever. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Revelation, chapter 20.
