The More We Dig. The More We Find.
Well, everybody, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, pastor Brandon, today. Matthew, chapter 27,. And today's title is the King's Coronation. The King's Coronation have you ever been in one of those like maybe a concert or something like that, and you get the hype man who gets up there right Like I went to this concert one time and it was at the Ryman in Nashville and it's this beautiful place, place and we've been waiting, we've had all the other. You know people that are just kind of getting started. You know the people who do their songs at first until finally the main guy is about to get up there. And you know, the main guy is about to get up there because the hype man gets up there and the hype man is just talking about what a great guy this is, what a wonderful artist he is, all the different awards and accolades, and we're like come on, man. Yes, we know that, that's why we're here, that's why we bought the tickets. Let's hear the man, right, you ever been in one of those? But then you go to one where the person is so well known, his accolades speak for themselves so much, that the hype man just says here he is and just lets them take over. It's like I really have no words. You know why you're here, I know why you're here. Let's just enjoy. That's what I feel like today.
Speaker 1:In chapter 27, for the king's coronation, we know exactly why we're here. The king is about to take his throne, and so I'm not even going to try to tell you how awesome this chapter is, other than you better get ready, because this is the worst day of Jesus' earthly life, but it's the best day for us. If you're ready, let's get ready to jump into God's word. But before you do that, as always, while you're getting your Bible out, getting your coffee out, getting your popcorn out, make sure you take just a moment to like, share and subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you leave us a five-star review on the podcast it really does help and make sure you're going to the Bible Breakdown discussion on Facebook. The more we dig, the more we find they're doing a wonderful job over there, and all the links to all the things we talk about you can find at TheBibleBreakdowncom. Well, once again, as we get ready to do this, make sure you remember that the overall idea is what we're about to see today, and that is that Jesus is the king. Matthew, starting in chapter one, he's been talking about this idea of Jesus is at least the rightful earthly king, but then every chapter after that he's talking about how he is so much more than an earthly king he is the king of kings. Well, now, in chapter 27, we see the crowning of the king, that he is now showing us what the king does, and that is that he makes right all the wrongs, and that is by dying on the cross for our sins. We couldn't earn the love of God. We couldn't achieve perfection in our sins. We couldn't earn the love of God. We couldn't achieve perfection in our life. And so the king, in his sovereignty, does what we couldn't do. So we call this chapter the coronation, the crowning of the king. So if you're ready, let's just read it and just enjoy the goodness of God. Here we go. Chapter 27, verse 1 says this Very early in the morning, the leading priests and the elders of the people met again to lay plans for putting Jesus to death.
Speaker 1:Then they bound him, led him away and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor. When Judas, who had betrayed him, realized that Jesus had been condemned to die, he was filled with remorse and he took the 30 pieces of silver back to the leading priest and elders. I have sinned, he declared. I have betrayed an innocent man. What do we care? They retorted that's your problem. Then Jesus threw the silver coins down in the temple and went out and hanged himself. The leading priest picked up the coins. It wouldn't be right for us to put this money in the temple treasury, they said, since it was a payment for murder. After some discussion, they finally decided to bury the potter, to buy, rather, the potter's field, and they made it into a cemetery for foreigners. That is why the field is still called the field of blood. This fulfilled the prophecy of Jeremiah that says they took 30 pieces of silver, the price at which he valued to buy the people of Israel, and purchased the potter's field as the Lord directed, verse 11,.
Speaker 1:Now Jesus was standing before Pilate, the Roman governor. Are you the king of the Jews? The governor asked. Jesus replied you have said it, jews, the governor asked. Jesus replied you have said it. But then the leading priests and the elders made their accusations against him. Jesus remained silent. Don't you hear all these charges that they are bringing against you? Pilate demanded, but Jesus made no response to any of the charges, much to the governor's surprise.
Speaker 1:Now it was the governor's custom each year during the Passover celebration to release one prisoner to the crowd, anyone they wanted. This year there was a notorious prisoner, a man named Barabbas. As the crowds gathered before Pilate's house in the morning, he asked them which one do you want me to release to you, barabbas or Jesus, who is called the Messiah? He knew very well that the religious leaders had arrested Jesus out of envy. Just then, pilate was sitting on the judgment seat and his wife sent him a message Leave that innocent man alone. I suffered through a terrible nightmare about him last night. I suffered through a terrible nightmare about him last night. Meanwhile, the leading priest and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas to be released and for Jesus to be put to death. So the governor asked again which of these two men do you want me to release to you? The crowd shouted back Barabbas. Pilate responded Then what should I do with Jesus, who is called the Messiah? And they shouted back crucify him why? Pilate demanded what crime has he committed? But the mob roared even louder crucify him. Pilate saw that he wasn't getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying I am innocent of this man's blood, the responsibility is yours, and all the people yelled back we will take responsibility for his death, we and our children. So Pilate released Barabbas to them and he ordered Jesus, flogged and with a lead tip whip, and then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.
Speaker 1:Now pause. That was actually pretty uncommon. The goal of crucifixion was really to die of exposure. I know that sounds terrible, but you were hung on a cross Many times. They weren't nailed there. They were hung there because you were supposed to last for days and over the time you would slowly die of exposure, would slowly die of exposure. Nailing them to the cross would have increased the pain and also lessened their lifespan. But within him being flogged to it within an inch of his life, he was already half dead by the time he actually got to the cross. That's why he died within just six hours. Normally it could have taken two, three, up to five days, but because he was beaten so severely, flogged, that's why he didn't live very long. Verse 27,.
Speaker 1:Some of the governor's soldiers took Jesus to their headquarters and called out the entire regiment. They stripped him, put on a scarlet robe and they wove a thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head, and they placed a reed stick in his right hand as a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mockery, taunting hail, king of the Jews, and they spit on him and they grabbed a stick and struck him on the head with it. And when they finally were tired of mocking him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes, spit on him and they grabbed a stick and struck him on the head with it. And when they finally were tired of mocking him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes back on him again and they led him away to be crucified. Along the way, they came across a man named Simon, who is from Cyrene, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus' cross. And as they went out to the place called Golgotha, which means the place of the skull, the soldiers gave Jesus wine mixed with bitter gall, but when he tasted it he refused to drink it. Another reason for doing that would have been to prolong the agony. It would have dulled his senses so that he would have been able to live longer, and, of course, living longer increases the pain and increases the anguish. Verse 35,.
Speaker 1:After they had nailed him to the cross, the soldiers gambled for his clothes by throwing dice. Then they sat around and kept guard as he hung there. A sign was fastened above Jesus' head announcing the charge against him, and it read this is Jesus, the King of the Jews. Two revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. Look at you now, they yelled at him, you who said that you were going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days. Well then, if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross. The leading priests and teachers of the law and the elders also mocked Jesus. He saved others, they scoffed but he can't save himself. So he is the king of Israel, is he? Let him come down from the cross right now, and then we will believe him. He trusted God, so let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said I am the son of God. Then the revolutionaries who were crucified well, being crucified, they also ridiculed him in the same way.
Speaker 1:At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o'clock, and at three o'clock Jesus called out with a loud voice Eli, eli lemas sabachthani, which means my God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Some of the bystanders misunderstood and they thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah. One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so that he could drink. But the rest said wait, let's see if Elijah comes to save him. Then Jesus shouted out again and then released his spirit, and at that moment the curtain in the sanctuary of the temple was torn in two, from the top to the bottom, and the earth shook. Rocks split apart and tombs opened and the bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead. They left the cemetery after Jesus' resurrection and went into the holy city of Jerusalem and appeared to many people.
Speaker 1:The Roman officer and the other soldiers at the crucifixion were terrified by the earthquake and all that had happened and they said this man truly was the Son of God, and many women who had come from Galilee with Jesus to care for him were watching from a distance. Among them was Mary Magdalene, mary, the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of James and John, the sons of Zebedee. As evening approached, joseph, a rich man from Arimathea who had become a follower of Jesus, went to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body, and Pilate issued an order to release it to him. Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a long sheet of clean linen cloth and he placed it on his own new tomb. He placed it in his own new tomb, or he placed it. He placed it in his own new tomb, which he had carved out of the rock. Then he rolled a great stone across the entrance and left. Both Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting across from the tomb and watching. The next day, on the Sabbath, the leading priest and the Pharisees went to Pilate and said to him Sir, we remember that when that deceiver he once said while he was still alive, pilate replied Take a guard and secure it to the best you can. And so they sealed the tomb and posted guards to protect it.
Speaker 1:Wow, I mean, come on, that's amazing, right? Well, there's two things I want to share with you, and then we'll be done for the day. First of all is a misunderstanding of one of the things that Jesus said. And then I love that. It says that Jesus cried out with a loud voice and he released his spirit, which means that the king don't die until he wants to die. I love how he's saying it wasn't like he was sitting there just hoping to die, hoping to die, and finally he died. He's like, no, when he was done, he released his spirit, okay, I'm ready to go. And finally he died. He's like, no, when he was done, he released his spirit. He's like, okay, I'm ready to go. So I love that. But the other thing is is many people and you may have heard this as well, and I know I say this because there's four Gospels and in a couple of other Gospels I say this as well. I just love it so much that I want to make sure I say it in every opportunity is in verse 46,.
Speaker 1:It says that Jesus says, which is Psalm, chapter 22, the first part of it, and it's my God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Well, the reason why that's a big deal is because for a long time, unintentionally, people have used that to say that at that moment, the Heavenly Father turned his back on Jesus and then for a moment, jesus was somehow disconnected from the triune Godhead, the Trinity, that he was completely separate from God. And in that moment, he said God, why have you turned your back on me? That's terrible. So then, therefore, that would say, then, that when, in your darkest moment, will God turn his back on me? That's terrible. So then, therefore, that would say, then, that when, in your darkest moment, will God turn his back on you? No, definitely not. And you can't divide the Trinity, you can't divide the triune Godhead. They are inseparable. I mean, that just doesn't work. So, therefore, there's something else that must be happening. The father does not turn his back on you in your darkest moment. Rather, he is closest to you in your darkest moment. So then, therefore, what's happening?
Speaker 1:Well, notice that, right before that, they are saying I thought he was a son of God, I thought he had a plan, I thought that he was supposed to be the one to come and save us all. Where is he at? Well, then, right after that, he says my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Well, do you know, like? There are songs that all you got to do is say a couple of lines and then most people know it. Like, for instance, if I were to say I got friends in, then anyone who likes country music would say low places. You know what I mean. If I were to say amazing grace, you know if you're a Christian, very long you know. The next line is grace.
Speaker 1:There are some songs that are so like universal that you know the rest of it. Well, a famous Psalm is Psalm 23, and Psalm 23 starts with my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? But if you keep reading it, it talks about how there are wolves all around me, there's bad people plotting against me. But the good news is God is with me and the plan of God is going to continue. The Messiah is gonna come, he's going to overcome and he's gonna set the world right again. So, in other words, jesus wasn't saying that the father had left him. Jesus was declaring everything was going as planned. He was saying hey, you know that song that we sing that talks about how, even when you're surrounded by enemies, god is still with you. God is still on the throne and he is going to send his Messiah. Everything's still going the way it's supposed to.
Speaker 1:Jesus was not declaring that the Father had forsaken him. He was declaring victory. He was declaring that I know this looks bad, guys. I know that it looks like I don't know what I'm talking about, but trust me when I tell you everything is going according to plan. And I think that, above so many other things, that could be the lesson for us today is I think that Jesus would say even when sometimes it looks like everything is bad, when it looks like the world has done gone crazy, when it looks like everything is falling apart, you're trusting me. But it seems like the more you trust me, the more things go wrong. Can you just trust me when I say everything's going according to plan? Jesus has many enemies, but he has no rivals and he sits on the throne and God does not leave you when you're in your worst moment.
Speaker 1:And here's the thing If you ever heard a preacher talk about that, and if you ever heard that, please don't feel bad about that that that is something that people are taught from a long time ago and they never had any reason to think otherwise. You have to dig really deep to find that. I didn't learn that on my own. Somebody told me something different and I started researching it and going, whoa, that's actually really cool and it's true and it's amazing.
Speaker 1:But instead of seeing that as wow, when Jesus needed the father the most, he was all alone. Instead, jesus was declaring victory. He was starting his soundtrack and he was saying hey guys, guess what I won? You thought you had me, but I just won. Isn't that amazing.
Speaker 1:Let's pray God. Thank you so much for today. Thank you that your word is true. Thank you, Lord. The more we dig, the more we find. And when you, jesus, were on the cross, the Father never turned his back on you. As a matter of fact, he was close, just like you're close to us in our darkest moments. And that, instead of surrendering and saying you lost, instead you were declaring victory and you started your own soundtrack. And I'm so thankful that you are my king. We celebrate you today In Jesus' name. We pray Amen. You know what God's word says. Jesus said he's going to say it tomorrow as we finish up the book of Matthew, matthew 28, verse 19. He says All authority in heaven and on earth have been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for the grand finale. Matthew, chapter 28.
