Speaker 1:Well, if you've been with us over the past several days, a couple of weeks now, we've been walking through the gospel of Matthew one chapter at a time, and if we were to sum up the entire gospel of Matthew into one phrase, it would be King Jesus. That is what Matthew is telling us is he's telling us Jesus is the King. And in chapter one we talked about how, like, he just starts off with saying I can prove it, and he just has his receipts. And he's saying I can prove it, and he just has his receipts. And he's saying I can prove to you that, at the least, jesus is the rightful king of earthly Israel. But then he spends chapter two through 28 saying he is so much more than that. Yesterday we got to talk about the idea of how Jesus was then coronated as the king by dying on the cross for our sins. And when we left him he has been placed into a tomb and he's going to be there for three days and three nights. And now we have the ending, and it's actually the end of the beginning. Jesus doesn't end there, but we keep going after that and we're going to get to that. In just a moment let's finish up the narrative of chapter 28,. And then let's figure out what happens after that. You ready Matthew 28,.
Speaker 1:Verse 1 says this early on Sunday morning, as the new day was dawning, mary Magdalene and the other Mary went out to visit the tomb. Suddenly, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled aside the stone and sat on it. His face shone like lightning and his clothes was as white as snow. The guards shook with fear as they saw him and they fell into a dead faint. Then the angel spoke to the women Don't to the women, don't be afraid. He said I know you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He isn't here. He is risen from the dead, just as he said what happened. Come see where his body was laid. Now go quickly and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you. And the women ran quickly from the tomb. They were very frightened but also filled with great joy, and they rushed to give the disciples the angel's message. And as they went, jesus met them and greeted them. And they ran to him, grasped his feet and worshiped him, and I love this. The first thing Jesus says don't be afraid, go, tell my brothers to leave for Galilee and they will see me there.
Speaker 1:As the women went on their way, some of the guards went into the city and told the leading priest what had happened. The meeting with the elders was called and they decided to give the soldiers a large bribe. And they told the soldiers, you must say, jesus' disciples came during the night, while they were sleeping, and they stole the body the governor hears about. It will stand up for you so you won't get into trouble. So the guards accepted the bribe and said what they were told to say. Their story is widely spread among the Jews, even still. They even still tell it today.
Speaker 1:Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go, and when they saw him, they worshipped him. But some doubted. And Jesus came and told his disciples I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you, and be sure of this. I am with you always, even until the end of the age. Wow, what an amazing moment. Jesus rose from the dead and he empowers them and he says now the kingdom of heaven is yours, the door is wide open, so go tell the world. All about me. Isn't that amazing? Let me tell you what happens after that. After that, jesus ascends into heaven about 40 days later, and then, as the feast of Pentecost is coming about, seven days after that, they are praying in the upper room. Very possibly is coming About seven days after that. They are praying in the upper room very possibly possibly the room where the Last Supper happened and the Holy Spirit descends and he fills all of them. And then they begin to spread out and to spread the gospel all over the known world. Peter eventually makes it to Rome. Matthew eventually makes it, possibly, to a place called Ethiopia.
Speaker 1:Others went all over the known world spreading the gospel. All of them, with the one exception of John, were martyred for their faith. They died rather than saying that what Jesus did was not so. John was the only one, according to history, that died of natural causes, but they continued to spread the gospel, and it wasn't just they spread the gospel that Jesus rose again. It was, and now the kingdom is open to you. It taught them what it was to live as followers of Christ.
Speaker 1:And can I tell you that, 2,000 years later, that's still us. We still have been given that great commission, and that is to go into our world and make disciples, teaching them, baptizing them, allowing God to take over their life, as he has taken over ours, and to spread the gospel to everyone. So can I tell you God's plan for your life? God has a plan for you to know him and then for you to make him known. So, first of all is to be the very best Christ follower you can be, and then, secondly, to spread what you have learned to others. And we do that. We get to be part of the Bible, we get to be Matthew, chapter 29, as the mission continues. Jesus has promised that one day he will come again, but until he does, you and I get to be part of the mission, and that is to spread the gospel to everyone we meet.
Speaker 1:Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today, thank you for the gospel of Matthew, because you show and you prove that you truly are the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Lord, as I pray, as we leave Matthew and we move on to the next book of the Bible, that you let your word dig deep into our hearts. Teach us to know you more in all things. Help us to be a disciple and help us to be a disciple maker. In Jesus' name we pray, amen, amen, one more time. Jesus said in Matthew 28, verse 19,. He said all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow. For Amos, chapter 1.
