The Bible Breakdown: Daily Bible Reading
Mark 05: The King Has No Rivals
Jesus demonstrates His unrivaled authority as King by confronting and defeating three powerful enemies: demonic possession, incurable disease, and death itself.
• A demon-possessed man controlled by a "legion" of evil spirits is completely delivered when Jesus commands the demons to leave
• The demons beg to enter a herd of pigs, which then rush into the lake and drown
• Jesus heals a woman who had suffered from bleeding for twelve years after she touches His robe with faith
• When Jairus's daughter dies before Jesus can reach her, He still goes to her home
• Jesus raises the dead girl to life by simply speaking the words "Talitha koum" (little girl, get up)
• These three miracles prove Jesus has supreme authority over the spiritual realm, physical illness, and death
• Jesus exercises His power through compassion, meeting people in their suffering rather than ruling from a distance
• When we follow Jesus, nothing we encounter can overcome us because the King is with us

The More We Dig. The More We Find.
Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown podcast with your host, pastor Brandon. Today, mark, chapter 5, and today's title is the King has no Rivals. The King has no Rivals. And what today's podcast makes me think about is I was listening to these famous basketball players talk about one time when they had this event, and it was this amazing event where all of the living people who were in the Basketball Hall of Fame were all coming together and it was just this massive event, this thing.
Speaker 1:And this guy who was being interviewed I can't remember his name right now, but he's a Hall of Famer and he was talking with a couple other guys and he said there was a moment when I knew Michael Jordan was different, he said, because he had recently been inducted into the Hall of Fame himself. And he said you know, I'm standing around and I'm seeing some of these greats who were all standing around me and he's like I'm kind of fanboying out a little bit here. Some of these guys were some of my heroes as I was growing up, right, and he said, all of a sudden, all these guys that I idolized all got quiet and they all just kind of looked over to one side of the room and he said, as we all looked over, all of a sudden Michael Jordan comes walking in. And he said he comes walking in and he looks at everybody, everybody, and he's smiling at this one, he's heading on that one, but he walks right to the front of the line and then we all walk in together and nobody argued the point and he's like that's the moment I realized all you fans, y'all may talk about who's the greatest, he said, but among those who know, among the greats, everybody knows who's the greatest. You know what I mean and that's what I think about when I think about this podcast. You know people for all of time are talking about. You know, is Jesus really God? Is he really this? Can I guarantee you, in the spirit world ain't nobody having a discussion on who Jesus is. He is the king and there is no rival. We're going to get it all in just a moment, but if you like what we're doing, make sure you take just a moment to like, share and subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you're leaving us a five-star review on the podcast it really does help and make sure you're going to the Bible Breakdown discussion on Facebook. It's an amazing group of people doing a wonderful job, and you can get the links to all of that at thebiblebreakdowncom.
Speaker 1:Well, if you've been with us for the past few days, we've been talking about this idea of the Gospel of Mark and there are four Gospels Matthew, mark, luke and John and one of the best ways to really describe the Book of Mark is the Gospel in motion. If you think about it, matthew and Luke start with the birth narrative of Jesus, how all this got started. The Gospel of John really goes back to the beginning of time and he says in the beginning was the Word? Mark just jumps right into the miracles and, as we've been talking about, mark was most likely kind of ghostwritten by Peter. Peter was preaching in Rome and Mark John. Mark was the guy who was kind of dictating what he was saying and translating for him, and that's where we got the gospel of Mark and that's exactly what you expect. You know, anything coming from Peter is just let's just get into it and that's what he's been doing. That's why I think it was like over 30 times, was it that he'll say immediately or instantly or just then, and just constantly moving as we see Jesus with his people? He is the king, but he is not standing above the people the way he very well could, but he is with the people as a servant, a suffering servant with the people. And what we're going to see today in chapter 5 is we're going to see how there are many enemies to Jesus, but he stands alone and has no rivals. So let's jump into this together If you're ready which, by the way, yes for those of you who are LeBron fans, I did just compare a story about Michael Jordan to Jesus, but they are not the same thing. Okay, so don't send me your emails. All right, here we go. Chapter 5, verse 1 says this.
Speaker 1:So they arrived at the other side of the lake in the region of the Gennesares. When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out of the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be restrained, even with a chain. Whenever he was put into chains and shackles, as he often was, he snapped the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Day and night, he wandered among the burial caves in the hills, howling, cutting himself with sharp stones, when Jesus was still some distance away. The man saw him, ran to meet him and bowed low before him With a shriek. He screamed why are you interfering with me, jesus, son of the Most High God? In the name of God, I beg you don't torture me, for Jesus had already said to the spirit Come out of the man, you evil spirit. And then Jesus demanded, and he replied Now pause for a second.
Speaker 1:One of the things that's very interesting is, especially during the time, to call something by its first name was to take away the authority of a thing. For instance, if you're in a situation where there's a teacher in the classroom and you're supposed to call that teacher, mr Cannon, but then someone walks up and says, hey, brandon. Well, that is to take away from my authority as a teacher. So in the time, what many scholars believe was happening is just before that, the demon said Jesus, son of the Most High God. What he was doing is he was actually being disrespectful. He was saying I know who you are. You're nobody special, I know your name. Well, jesus comes back and he says what is your name? And this demon had no ability to deny it. He had to tell the truth. So with that what the Bible describes. It is not always prescribed and so the Bible is not saying that you should go around to anybody that you may think have a demonic issue and demand to know the name of whatever. Jesus is taking the authority away from this demon, saying you have no power over me by saying this Okay, verse 10.
Speaker 1:Then the evil spirits begged again and again not to send them to some distant place. There happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby. Send us into those pigs. The spirits demanded Let us enter them. Jesus gave permission and the evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs and the entire herd about 2,000 pigs plunged down to the steep hillside into the lake and was drowned in the water. The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding countryside, spreading the news. As they ran, people rushed out to see what had happened. A crowd soon gathered around Jesus and, as they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, he was sitting there fully clothed, perfectly sane, and they were all afraid. Then those who had seen what had happened told the others about the demon possessed man and the pigs, and the crowds began pleading with Jesus to go away and leave them alone. As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed, begged to go with him, but Jesus said no, go home to your family, tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been to you. So the man started off to visit the ten towns of that region and began to proclaim the great things Jesus had done for him, and everyone was amazed at what he told them.
Speaker 1:Now what had happened was is in that place, none of the Jewish people would have been raising pigs. They were not kosher, not good, and so what many scholars believe was happening is these pigs may have been being raised to offer as idol worship, because one of the number one gods quote unquote gods that you would worship was the god Zeus, and one of the ways you would worship the god Zeus is with pig sacrifices. And so what actually a lot of people are thinking is these were actually being raised for idol worship, and that's why the demons would have wanted to go into the pigs, because idol worship is their thing, right? And so Jesus says sure, go. But then he still gets the last laugh because he killed the pigs, which saved them from being sacrificed, and he took away their ability to do idol worship. So, as you could say, that is the first case of deviled ham. Let's move on quickly, verse 21,.
Speaker 1:Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Dairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, pleading fervently with him. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, pleading fervently with him my daughter is dying. Please come and lay your hands on her and heal her so she can live. Jesus went with him and all the people followed, crowding around him.
Speaker 1:A woman in the crowd who had suffered for 12 years with constant bleeding had suffered a great deal from many doctors and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them. But she had not gotten any better. In fact, she had gotten worse. She heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him, threw the crowd and touched his robe. She thought to herself if I can just touch his robe, I will be healed. Immediately the bleeding stopped and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of the terrible condition.
Speaker 1:Jesus realized at once that the healing power had gone out from him. So he turned around in the crowd and asked who touched my robe? The disciples said to him Look at this crowd of people pressing around you. How can you ask who touched me? But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened, came to her excuse me. Realizing what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. He said to her daughter your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over. Now pause again for a second. Many times that right there is confusing. When they go, wait a minute. What does he mean when he says that your faith has made you well, as though they actually had the power to heal themselves? That is not what he's saying. He's saying your willingness to come to me is what saved you, is what healed you. So, over and over again, we're going to see Jesus say it is your faith that has done this. What he is saying is you had the courage, the gut, the tenacity, whatever you want to call it. You came to me. That was the right choice. That's what he's saying over and over again, verse 35,.
Speaker 1:While he was still speaking to, her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue, and he told them. Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn't let anyone go in except Peter James and John, the brother of James, and wouldn't let anyone go in except Peter James and John, the brother of James. When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, jesus saw much commotion, weeping and wailing and he said why all this commotion and weeping? This child isn't dead, she's only asleep. The crowd laughed at him, but he made them all leave and he took the girl's father and mother and the three disciples and went into the room where she was lying, holding her hand. He said to her Talitha kum, which means little girl, get up. And the girl. And the girl, who was 12 years old, immediately stood up and walked around and they were overwhelmed and totally amazed. Jesus gave them strict orders not to tell anyone what had happened and then he told them to give her something to eat.
Speaker 1:Wow, as you see in this, jesus, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, he is not sitting on a throne in this moment, which he could have very well done. He is not just proclaiming his greatness, which he could have very well done. You know. What he's doing is he is going out among the people and he is rescuing these people. There is a man who is demon possessed, that people had tried not to heal but just to bind. That's all they knew how to do. Jesus doesn't bind him, he sets him free and he tells them go, tell your family that you are now free. I love how there was another lady who she had. Not only has she suffered for many years of this disease, but she had seemingly been forgotten by the rest of the crowd. And instead of turning her away, when he finds out, he says you had the faith to come to me. You're healed. And then, when all hope is lost, jesus heals this dead little girl. So the devil can't overcome you, sickness can't overcome you, not even death can overcome Jesus. That's why I'm telling you, I think, that if we could get a just a peek into the world of the spirit, we would not have to wonder who is the real king of Kings and Lord of Lords, just like I was telling you my silly example of all of those basketball players who are in the hall of fame.
Speaker 1:They said, when Michael Jordan showed up instantly you could tell who the real greatest of all time was was because all these people who had all these titles, nobody was looking at themselves anymore. They're all looking at the greatest of all time. I think if we really start to think about it, we realize we know who the King of Kings is. We know exactly who the Lord of Lords is, and he is the one who died for us and rose again. And what that means to you is is that's your king, which means nothing you encounter in life can overwhelm you, can overcome you, because he is your king.
Speaker 1:Now that does not mean that we will not go through difficult times. It just means, if we go through difficult times, the king goes with us and wherever he goes, he brings all that. He is with him, and so wherever we are, that is the safest place to be because the king is with us. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, god, that you are with us and that you are for us and Lord.
Speaker 1:In life so many times there's so many things we go through that we don't understand. What we need to understand is that you are with us and that you are for us. And, lord, when you are with us, there's going to be times when the devil is going to attack, times when sickness is going to happen, times when death will be close, but we know that they hold no candle to you because you have many enemies, but the king has no rivals, and so we trust you in all things. In Jesus' name, we pray Amen. Amen. God's word says in Mark 8, verse 34,. He says if anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. We have a king worth serving. He is the gospel in motion. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Mark chapter.
