The Bible Breakdown: Daily Bible Reading
Zechariah 13: Marco Polo
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What if the hardest seasons are the ones that finally let you hear God answer back? We open Zechariah 13 and find a fierce promise: God will cleanse His people, expose false voices, and refine hearts until faith rings true. This isn’t pain for pain’s sake. It’s the fire that turns raw ore into gold and teaches us to pray with trust that expects a response.
We walk through the chapter’s striking images—a fountain that washes sin away, idols erased from memory, and the sobering line “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered” that reverberates into the New Testament. From there, we linger on the remnant refined like silver and purified like gold, and we talk about what that looks like when your life feels like a furnace. The Daniel 3 story becomes a living guide: allegiance over outcomes, presence over performance, and courage that doesn’t wait for perfect conditions.
Along the way, we get practical about discernment in a loud world: how to spot spiritual counterfeits, why humility and accountability matter, and how Scripture anchors us when easy answers tempt us. We also unpack a simple prayer picture—our “Marco” to God’s faithful “Polo”—that captures the nearness promised in “They will call on my name, and I will answer.” Expect stories, Scripture, and straightforward encouragement for anyone navigating pressure, doubt, or delay.
If you’re hungry for a faith that’s durable, not decorative, this conversation will meet you in the heat and point you to hope. Listen, share with a friend who needs strength today, and leave a review to help others find the show. Subscribe so you don’t miss tomorrow’s finale in Zechariah 14.

The Marco Polo Metaphor
Context For Zechariah’s Message
Reading Zechariah 13
Refined Like Silver And Gold
SPEAKER_01Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Zechariah chapter 13. And today's title is going to be Marco Polo. Marco Polo. Now, if you've never played the game Marco Polo, it probably lost on you. But the the game, and I'm sure there's like a really big backstory to this, but the game is, is that if you ever can't find somebody, then you just can yell out Marco and they would say polo. And I know he was like a famous like explorer back in the day, but for the longest time, I would do this with my girls if I couldn't find them. Like I needed to know where they were, or if they needed to know where I was, they knew that at any given time they could yell out Marco, and I would yell out polo, or the other way around. Well, in today's text, we're gonna see that there's gonna be a moment where the people of God are gonna cry out for God, and he is gonna cry out for them, which is an amazing, amazing encouragement if you think about it. So we're gonna get into all that in just a moment. I'm gonna talk about some Marco Polo up in here. So if you want to get your Bibles out, open up to Zachariah chapter 13. While you're doing that, make sure you take just a moment, like, share, and subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you leave us a five-star review on the podcast. It really does help. And make sure you're going to the Bible breakdown discussion on Facebook. There's an amazing group of people doing a wonderful job. And as always, you can get all that information at the Bible Breakdown.com. Well, if you've been with us, we are getting ready to finish up on what has become a really, really great book of the Bible as we are walking through Zachariah. And the big idea is to come on home. The idea of these people who have come home from some Babylonian um exile exile, I can get all that word or those words out, and they are now trying to find their place among these other nations. And what God is telling them is don't just come home physically, come home spiritually. Come on home to me. We've been walking through what that looks like, and we've gotten to the place in Zechariah where he said, Okay, you've come home to me, I've come home to you, and I'm setting things up the way they are supposed to be, and now they're talking about what that looks like to do life with God. The other thing that's very interesting about this is we've been talking about the idea that many people call this book in Daniel the book of Revelation for the Old Testament. And one of the reasons is because the genre, the literary genre of this, is apocalyptic literature, which means there's a lot of different kinds of symbolism and all this kind of stuff. And the New Testament quotes out of Zechariah, especially Revelation, quotes out of Zechariah so very much. And so it's interesting, and as a matter of fact, we're gonna see a couple of places in today's text that quotes directly from Zechariah, from the New Testament back to Zachariah. So we're gonna jump into this and we're gonna see what God's Word has to say. We're gonna talk about Marco Polo at the end. So here we go. Zechariah 13, verse 1 says this. On that day, a fountain will be opened for the dynasty of David and for the people of Jerusalem, a fountain to cleanse them from all their sins and impurity. On that day, says the Lord of heaven's armies, I will erase idol worship throughout the land, so that even the names of the idols will be forgotten, and I will remove from the land both the false prophets and the spirit of impunity that came with them. If any one continues to prophesy, his own father and mother will tell him, You must die, for you have prophesied lies in the name of the Lord. And as he prophesies, his own father will stab him. My goodness. Verse 4. On that day people will be ashamed to claim the prophetic gift. No one will pretend to be a prophet by wearing prophet's clothes. He will say, I am no prophet, I'm a farmer. I began working for my far for a farmer as a boy. And if someone asks, then what about those wounds on your chest? He will say, I was wounded at my father's, at my friend's house. Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, the man who is my partner, says the Lord of Heaven's armies, strike down the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn against the lambs. Two-thirds of the people in the land will be cut off and die, says the Lord, but one third will be left in the land. I will bring that group through the fire and make them pure. I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, These are my people, and they will say, This are the Lord is our God. Wow. I want to go back to that and read those last two verses. He says, I will bring them through the fire and make them pure. I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them. I will say, These are my people, and they will say, The Lord is our God. I think what I love about that the most is there's some things about God that we can't learn until we go through the fire. It reminds me of in the book of Daniel, the famous story in chapter three, how there were three Hebrew boys, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abinago, that they were in this foreign land, in a foreign situation, and they were told that if they don't worship this idol, they were going to get thrown into this fiery furnace. And I love their comment. They said, The Lord we serve can can keep us, can deliver us, but even if he doesn't, we will never worship your God. Well, they said, Well then good luck. And they threw them into the fire, and the Bible said that not they came back out of the fire, and not even their clothing smelled like smoke, because while they were in the fire, God was with them. So much so that people looking from the outside said they looked like there were four people in there because God literally was with them. What do you think they learned about God in that moment? There were some things that they knew about God in theory, that they knew about God personally after that. They knew that when the worst thing happens, it's still not over. God is still with us. And you know, the same is true for all of us. When we go through seasons where God takes us through the fire, there's something about our faith that becomes purified, refined, that becomes where we can call on his name and we know for a fact that he will hear us. And so I know um we have some staff members come on our team at one point and they have used this as a joke, you know, a lot to kind of tease me a little bit with, but they'll tell people, they'll say, Can you believe what Pastor Brandon did when we first got here? He prayed for us, and they'll say, He prayed that God wouldn't give us success all the time, but that sometimes God would make it hard. Because it was only in the hard things that we would learn to know him more. Can you believe that our pastor prayed that we would go through hard times? And I will admit that I probably should have said that better. You know, I probably should have come out in a different way because I didn't I didn't mean it like that. But what I what I meant was is what I've learned in my life is there's very few things you learn out of victory. I mean, think about it. You learn that, okay, that one way worked, right? But think about all the things that you learn through difficulty. You learn what doesn't work, what does work, you learn this, you learn that, you all stuff. But one of the things you learn the most is you learn what the character and the goodness and the faithfulness of God looks like. I heard someone say one time that you don't truly know the strength of God until you get to the end of yours. And it's going through those fires and knowing that when I call out to God, Marco, he calls back to us, polo. That we we can trust. I'd say there's nothing more terrifying as a dad when you got small kids and you've taught them this game, you know, Marco Polo, there's nothing more terrifying than when you call out Marco and you don't hear polo. I've had that happen to me a couple of times, and they would get in trouble when I'd realized they were actually just around the corner. They just didn't want to, you know, they didn't want to fool with dad. It's like, now listen, don't do that. If I call Marco, you better say polo, you know, right? There's nothing more terrifying because you don't know where your kids are, right? But the wonderful thing about going through God through difficulty is when you realize that every time I call out to him, he always answers. That's why for you, I would pray. I would pray not that God would keep you from all trouble, that God would keep you from anything difficult. I hope it doesn't happen, but I wouldn't pray that because what I would pray is that you would understand that every single time you call out his name, he always answers. He may answer in different ways, he may answer with a voice, he may answer with someone that comes to you and says, I had you on my mind today, or there may be still the still settled confidence because of his word that promises to be with us. But God will always answer when you call out Marco. Let's pray. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you that you always answer us. Sometimes it's through a song, sometimes it's through a moment, sometimes it's through something, something else. I don't I don't know what it is, but I am so thankful that you always answer us. I pray you will open our ears to hear you more clearly today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Anyway, God's word says in Zechariah 9, verse 9, it says, Rejoice greatly. See your king comes to you, righteous and victorious. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for the finale, Zechariah chapter 14.
