Ever wonder why worship can feel empty, even when you’re doing everything “right”? We dig into Malachi 2 and face the gap between polished rituals and a faithful life. From the priests’ compromised leadership to the community’s fractured vows, we walk through a bracing call to integrity that restores life and peace.

We start with the return-from-exile context: fields are dry, hopes are thin, and people are chasing physical fixes for a spiritual problem. Malachi confronts leaders first. Priests should guard knowledge, teach truth, and revere God’s name, but favoritism and soft lies have led many astray. We unpack how spiritual authority is a stewardship, not a stage, and why a leader’s reverence becomes life-giving for everyone they serve.

Then we shift to the heart of the community. Are we not all children of the same Father? When covenant bonds are treated lightly, idolatry slips in, worship loses weight, and tears at the altar replace true repentance. We talk about marriage as a living covenant that shapes souls and futures, and why guarding the heart is more than advice—it’s the gate that keeps faithfulness steady. The hard word on divorce and cruelty isn’t a hammer; it’s a rescue signal, calling us back to loyalty that reflects God’s steadfast love.

Finally, we turn the spotlight inward. Before we ask “Where is the God of justice?” we ask whether our lives align with what we offer at the altar. With practical steps—confession, repaired promises, truth over favoritism, scripture and prayer before hustle—we map a way back to integrity. The refiner’s goal isn’t shame but restoration: a people who live right and worship right, where faithfulness becomes the song God delights to hear.

Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Malachi chapter two. And today's title is True Faithfulness. True Faithfulness. I need to pause just for a moment, and we're going to get into all that in just a moment. And we're going to get into the same thing I say every single time. But first, I need to settle a slight rumor that has started among the interwebs. And that is, yes, this is actually my accent. Okay. I have people who uh listen from all over the world, and every once in a while someone will say, Okay, wait a minute. You say you live in Kentucky and you are from Alabama, but that does not sound like an Alabamian accent. Well, let me tell you, I live in a city called Bowling Green, Kentucky, and we are just a hodgepodge of all different people and all different places and all different things. And so I think being around people has made me kind of soften that southern draw. And what is funny about that is there are others of you who have contacted me and have said, man, I can tell you're from Kentucky. So you know how it is. You can't win. It is what it is. I just wanted to solve that. We're done. Make sure you get your Bibles out with me. We're going to be a Malachi chapter two. And as always, while you're doing that, make sure you take just a moment, like, share, subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you leave us a five-star on the view on the podcast. It really does help. And most important, make sure you're going to the Bible breakdown discussion on Facebook. There's an amazing group of people doing a wonderful job. And you can find all of that at thebiblebreakdown.com. Well, hopefully I've given you just a moment to get your Bibles ready because we're going to jump into this and to remember that we are going through the book of Malachi. And the overall idea of the book of Malachi is this overarching theme that we are refined for God's glory. If you remember, we talked about this yesterday, that this is also going on during the time of Haggai. And the people have come back to Israel. They're back from exile, but they are coming home to disaster. Like no one has been keeping their crops and their things for the 70 years they've been gone, and some of the stuff has been overrun by other people and all of this. And so they are trying to rebuild their life, but God is saying you need to focus on rebuilding your spiritual life. And I've got all these big ideas and things I want to do, but you got to make sure that you're coming back to me as well and rebuild that spiritual temple. Make sure we're worshiping. And honestly, at the same time, we read in Haggai, they were going through a literal drought. And they are trying to fix a physical problem with a physical solution. But what God is telling them is that, listen, this is not just a physical problem. There is a spiritual problem going on as well. And so if you will fix a spiritual problem with a spiritual solution, it will also affect physical. And so he's just trying to kind of get them back to center. And how many times do we need that? We get so busy taking care of things that are important, we neglect the things that are most important. And that's what Malachi is all about is about bringing people back to the most important things. And we're going to see that today in chapter two, when God's word is going to talk about what true faithfulness looks like. And he's going to end with very thought-provoking, very tempting, not tempting, um, uh convicting was the word I was looking for question. And we're going to dive into this together. So if you're ready, Malachi chapter two, verse one says this a warning to the priests. Listen, you priest. This command is for you. Listen to me and make up your minds to honor my name. So pause already. He's saying, You got to make up your mind, but let's make sure we make it up in the right direction. Make sure you make up your mind to honor me. This is what the Lord says, the Lord of heaven's armies. Or I will bring a terrible curse against you. I will curse even the blessings you receive. Indeed, I have already cursed them because you have not taken my warnings to heart. I will punish your descendants and splatter your faces with the manure from your festival sacrifices, and I will throw you on the manure pile. That is so gross. All right, verse four. Then at last you will know it was I who sent you this warning, so that my covenant with the Levites may continue, says the Lord of Heaven's armies. The purpose of my covenant with the Levites was to bring life and peace, and that is what I gave them. This required reverence from them, and they greatly revered me and stood in all of my name. They passed on to the people the truth of the instructions they received from me. They did not lie or cheat. They walked with me, living good and righteous lives, and they turned many from lives of sin. The words of a priest's lips should preserve the knowledge of God, and the people should go to him for instruction. For the priest is a messenger of the Lord of Heaven's armies. But you priest have left God's path. Your instructions have caused many to stumble into sin. You have corrupted the covenant I made with the Levites, says the Lord of Heaven's armies. So I have made you despised and humiliated in the eyes of all the people, for you have not obeyed me, but have shown favoritism in the way you carry out my instructions. Are we not all children of the same Father? Are we not all created by the same God? Then why do you betray each other, violating the covenant of your ancestors? Judah has been unfaithful, and a detestable thing has been done in Israel and in Jerusalem. The men of Judah have defiled the Lord's beloved sanctuary by marrying women who worship idols. May the Lord cut off from the nation of Israel every last man who does, who has done this, and yet brings the offering of the Lord of heaven's armies. There is another thing you do. You cover the Lord's altar with tears, weeping and groaning, because he pays no attention to your offerings and doesn't accept them with pleasure. You cry out, Why doesn't the Lord accept my worship? I'll tell you why. Because the Lord's witnessed the Lord witnessed the vows you and your wife made when you were young, but you have been unfaithful to her, though she remained your faithful partner, the wife of your marriage vows. Didn't the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and spirit, you are his. And what does he want? God lead children from your union. So guard your heart. Remain loyal to the wife of your youth. For I hate divorce, says the Lord, the God of Israel. To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty, says the Lord of Heaven's army. So guard your heart and do not be unfaithful to your wife. You have wearied the Lord with your words. How have we wearied him? You ask. You have wearied him by saying to all who do evil, uh to by saying that all who do evil are good in the Lord's sight, and he is pleased with them. You have wearied him by asking, Where is the God of justice? So we go from one part where God is saying that spiritually I am going to throw manure at you, which is so gross, but funny at the same time. To then he says, You are wondering, you're at church and you're saying, Why isn't God hearing our prayers? Why isn't God hearing our prayers? And then he says, I will tell you why. Because you're not doing what I told you to do. You're not being faithful. And that right there is super convicting. Not the manure part. That's just gross. But here's here's the question I want to ask you and just kind of leave with you first. All be convicted by together. What has convicted me, I will pass off to you. And that is this. I cannot count how many times I have been in my prayer time. And I do my prayer time in the mornings, and I usually need it because I want to get ready for the day, that whole thing. And I cannot tell you how many times in my prayers that I have just prayed and basically said, God, I don't understand why I'm going through this hard season, but I just trust you anyway. You know what I mean? Just acting all pious. You know, just so good. Just bless him, Jesus. You know, that kind of thing. And I wonder how many times the Lord has kind of wanted to say to me, you know, you don't have to be going through such a hard time. When we all go through hard times, but but Brandon, this one's extra hard. But I'm sitting there acting all pious. Just, God, I have no idea why I'm going through this hard time. But I just trust you. And I wonder how many times it's so hard because I am not being faithful. Because I've brought it on myself. That's what he is saying to these priests. He's saying, You are at the altar and you're crying and you're you're sobbing and all this stuff, and you're saying, Why doesn't the Lord accept my worship? I'm doing it the way he told me to do it. But the reality is, is God is saying back to him, okay, you may have done the form of worship correctly, but you're not living the life that I've asked you to live. And in other places, he said, I am so done with your sacrifices. I would rather you have a contrite heart. Other words, I'd rather you live right than try to worship right. I want both, but if I gotta choose one, how about you live righteously? Because your act of living righteously is a form of worship all by itself. And so he is saying, You want me to bless you? How about you stop cheating on your wife? I mean, that's straight up. It don't get any more straight than that. So here's my question for you. Is it possible that many times we wonder why God isn't being faithful when if we looked at our life, we would find plenty of reasons? Like, I can't tell you how many times as a pastor I've sat with people and they're just basically asking me why God's not good. And and I tell them in the moment, listen, I don't I don't know what's going on in your life. I just know God is good. The very fact that He gives us the breath to breathe and all this kind of stuff, we God is more good than we deserve. And they're just saying, Yeah, I mean, I get that. It just seems like, you know, whatever, whatever. And over the course of the conversation, I find out that they never read their their Bible, they never pray, they're cheating on their taxes, they're they're cheating in other areas of their life, they've got all these different addictions, they're not being faithful to their spouse, all this kind of stuff, and they're going, I just don't understand why God's not being good. And the answer is God is being good because he hasn't struck you dead. You know what I mean? And that that's all of us. So I asked the question again: is it possible many times that we wonder why God is not being faithful? When the reality is, is God is being more good than we deserve, especially when we look back at our life and realize how much we are not being faithful. So here's the step. Here's the step. What if you took a moment today? And first of all, instead of looking at your problems, realizing how blessed you are that God is even giving you the next breath you're taking, and then stop and think, would I want to bless me? If I were God, thank goodness we're not, right? But if I were God, would I want to bless my life? Am I living in a way now we're not perfect, but we're always trying to get closer to God in everything we do, but am I living in a way that would that God would want to bless? Or not? And then make a course correction from there. Let's pray together. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you're with us and that you're for us. I'm thankful, God, that you are more merciful to us than we can imagine because you keep giving us opportunity after opportunity to make it right, to get closer to you. Although there's things we're doing in our life right now we don't even know that displeases you. Because you're having grace and you're giving us grace. There's other things, God, that we're doing right now that is bringing you glory and is bringing you praise. And we ask that you will give us the opportunity to do more of that. But in all things, you'll help us to know you more. Clear our eyes of all the things that get in the way, help us to see you more, and we celebrate you today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. Well, God's word says in Malachi 3, verse 3, it says the Lord will sit as a refiner, and he will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness. That's what God wants. He wants us to be righteous before him. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow from Malachi chapter 3.
