The Bible Breakdown: Daily Bible Reading
Genesis 13: Family Feud
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Family drama, land disputes, and a decision that looks like a loss. Genesis 13 reads like an ancient story, but it hits a modern nerve: what do you do when your own choices create tension, and peace comes with a price?
We follow Abram and Lot as their blessings grow so large the land cannot sustain them together. The herdsmen start fighting, and Abram steps in with a surprising approach to conflict resolution. He offers Lot first pick, choosing unity over control. Lot takes the fertile Jordan Valley and pitches his tents near Sodom, a detail that quietly warns us that “better” on the surface can hide deeper danger. Meanwhile Abram stays in what seems like the lesser place, and that is where God speaks again.
What I love about this chapter is the bigger message: God does not only bless the flawless. Abram is dealing with the fallout of earlier disobedience, yet the Lord still reaffirms the covenant, expands the vision, and calls Abram to walk the land in faith. If you have ever thought one wrong turn erased your future, this conversation is for you. We talk about trusting God when His promises feel unrealistic, choosing peace when conflict is close, and believing that God can make a masterpiece out of a mess.

SPEAKER_01Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Genesis chapter 13. And today's title is Family Feud. Family Feud. I don't know if you've ever heard of, you know, families like the Hatfields and the McCoys or other people like that, but folks be feuding ever since there's been families. And what I love about that is even though that happens, God still has an amazing way of using these things. And despite difficulties, he's able to still work out his plan in our lives. We're going to get all that in just a moment. So if you have your Bibles, want to open up with me to Genesis chapter 13. While you're doing that, make sure you take just a second, like, share, subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you leave us a five-star review on the podcast. It really does help. And make sure you're going to the Bible breakdown discussion on Facebook. It's an amazing group of people doing a wonderful job. And as always, you can get all that information at the Bible Breakdown.com. Well, once again, if you've been with us over the past few days, we are slowly walking through the unintentionally one of the more controversial books of the Bible. Because there's been so many people who have used the book of Genesis for so many other reasons. So we have to really put our minds back in the place of not even the time of Abraham, but the time of the recently liberated Jewish people who have been spending 400 years in Egyptian bondage. And then the Holy Spirit inspires Moses to kind of fix this polytheistic mindset that they would have had and said, no, no, all these other gods did not create the heavens and the earth. Yahweh, the one and only God, created the heavens and the earth, and this is how everything happened. And so he starts laying out the history of all things in the book of Genesis. And now, you know, yesterday we get to where Abraham dares greatly to really go and do what God has called him to do and just really uh seek after the plan of God. But if you remember, yesterday we talked about how God said, We want you to leave, I want you to leave everything, and I want you to go by yourself. Take your wife, take your stuff, but not the rest of your family. And he's like, Okay, well, I'll go and I'm gonna take my stuff and also the rest of my family. Well, that's gonna lead to a feud. And so here we are, him reaping the benefit of his disobedience. And so let's read this together and just once again, just bask in the good news that God doesn't just bless the perfect, because Abraham's be messing up all the place. So here we go. Genesis 13, verse 1 says this. So Abram left Egypt and then traveled north into the Negev along with his wife and his and lot and they all uh and all that they owned. Abram was very rich in livestock, silver, and gold. From the Negev, they continued traveling by stages toward Bethel, and they pitched their tents between Bethel and Ai, where they had camped before. This is the same place where Abram had built the altar and there worshiped the Lord again. Lot, who was traveling with Abram, had also become very wealthy with flocks of sheep and goats, herds of cattle, and many tents. But the land could not support both Abram and Lot, with all their flocks and their herds living so close together. So disputes broke out between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot. At that time the Canaanites and the Parazites were also living in the land. Finally, Abram said to Lot, Let's not allow this conflict to come between us or our herdsmen. After all, we are close relatives. The whole countryside is open to you. Take your choice of any section of the land you want, and we will separate. If you want the land to the left, I'll take the land to the right. If you prefer the land on the right, then I'll go to the left. Lot took a long look at the fertile plains of the Jordan Valley in the direction of Zoar. The whole area was well watered everywhere, like the garden of the Lord, or the beautiful land of Egypt. This was before the Lord had destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot chose for himself the whole Jordan Valley to the east of them. He went there with his flocks and his servants and parted company with his uncle Abram. So Abram settled in the land of Canaan, and Lot moved his tents to a place near Sodom and settled among the cities of the plain. But the people of the area were extremely wicked and constantly sinned against the Lord. After Lot had gone, the Lord said to Abram, Look as far as you can see in every direction, north, south, east, and west. I am giving all this land, as far as you can see, to your descendants, to you and your descendants as a permanent possession. And I will give you so many descendants that like the dust of the earth they cannot be counted. Go, walk through the land in every direction, for I am giving it to you. So Abram moved his camp from Hebron and settled near the oak grove belonging to Mamre. There he built another altar to the Lord. Do you know what I love about this is when when you you see the chapter from yesterday, you see how Abram has this big idea. God sends him on this daring adventure. I want you to go, leave everything, and watch what I will do. Well he goes, but he doesn't leave everything. He takes his stuff, but he also takes his family. And so is his extended family. And he is now dealing with the repercussions of that, and that is that there is now conflict. And so, because of the conflict, because of a problem that he created, now he is choosing he is in a difficult situation. Instead of going to this beautiful place on one side, he kind of makes concessions so Lot can have that, and he takes what appears to be the lesser, but it's in this difficult place where God says, This is exactly where I want you, I'm going to bless you. You know why I love that? It's because there is this misconception that if God is going to move in our lives, then we have to do everything right. It has to always go the right way. We have to make all the right decisions, and if we make a wrong decision, then God's plan is out the window. Do you know that sounds right? And we should do the best we can to make the best decisions we can. But I've never met anyone yet who's never made a bad decision. I've never met anyone yet who, you know, sometimes we make bad decisions with the best of intentions. But how about this? I've known plenty of people. I've been here too. I've made bad decisions because I didn't have the best of intentions. I'm human, right? And if we're not careful, we think, well, now God can't do anything. Now God can't use me. God's not going to fulfill his promises in my life. Just it's over, right? Well, don't tell Abram, because Abram is in a mess that he created. Now there's conflict. And then in order to settle the conflict, he says, We have to separate. You go wherever you want to go, and I'll take the lesser. And so Lot, instead of being the bigger person and going, well, I'll take the lesser, he's like, okay, I'll take the best. And so he goes that way. And so it looks like now everything is falling apart, it would seem. You know, he's he's made this, you know, Abram's made this bad decision. He's now lost the rest of his family. He's over here in a corner, it seems like, but it's in that very spot that says, okay, finally, it's just me and you. That's what I've been trying to get you to. To where you and I could finally be doing this together. And because now you and I are doing this together, you're now in the right spot for me to do what I want to do. God, do you not see what's around me? I'm in this mountainous area. There's nothing around. Yeah, but you've got me. Since you've got me, it's a majority. It's gonna be okay. And can I tell you, for some, for some of us, we need to hear that. Because we haven't lived a perfect life. We haven't gotten it all right. We've made many, many mistakes. Do you know what God would say to us? It's okay. You got me. And because you got me, that's a majority. And that doesn't mean that what God wants to do in our life is gonna look anything like what we thought. But it's gonna be exactly what He wants to do. Notice that in this point, uh God is telling Abram, I'm gonna give you a great nation, you're gonna have this big family. He doesn't have any kids yet. God's making promises that look ridiculous. But just wait and see what God will do. I wonder if that's God's word for some of us today. If God has made you a promise in his word that seems ridiculous, just wait and see. What God will do. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you are with us and you are for us more than we can imagine. I'm so thankful, God, that you take our messes and make something amazing. We turn that over to you right now. We give you all of our messes. And God, we're not trying to make more of them. We're just aware that we're not perfect. And so more of them may come. But I'm so thankful, Lord, that you specialize in making a masterpiece out of a mess. We celebrate that today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And what God's Word says in Genesis 1, verse 1, that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And since that verse is true, anything is possible. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Genesis chapter 14.
