Abraham has already seen God rescue him once, so why does he reach for the same fear-based lie all over again? Genesis 20 brings that uncomfortable question to the surface, and it hits home because it sounds like us: pressure rises, stakes feel high, and “protect myself first” starts to feel reasonable. We walk through Abraham’s decision to call Sarah his sister, the moment King Abimelech takes her, and the startling way God steps in with a warning that forces the truth into the open.

What makes this chapter sting is that Abimelech, a pagan king, ends up looking more honorable than Abraham. We talk about reputation, witness, and how quickly compromised integrity spreads beyond us, even affecting an entire household. At the same time, we see God’s mercy protecting Sarah and keeping His promise on track, proving again that God works through flawed people without excusing the flaw.

Then we bring it into everyday life: the boardroom, real estate deals, hard conversations, and the chaos of social media. “They won’t play fair, so I can’t either” is a common mindset, but it’s not the calling. We unpack what it means to be different without being a pushover, to keep boundaries without losing honesty, and to show the world that character can be consistent even when it costs something.

Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Genesis chapter 20. And today's title is Here We Go Again. Here we go again. One of the things I love about the Bible is it is full of true stories about real people. Like it's it's not it's not like Lord of the Rings or something else where there's like these, there's this wonderful narrator that makes sure that all the characters are still basically perfect. You know, you know, even saying they have these little things, whatever. No, no. In in the Bible, there is the the ultimate narrator, God, but he doesn't hide anything back, including some of the most notable quote unquote characters being as jacked up as we are. And I love it so much. So we're gonna jump right into this. This chapter just makes me feel better, all right? And so while you're getting your Bibles open to Genesis chapter 20, make sure you take just a moment to like, share, and subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you leave us a five-star review on the podcast. It really does help. Also, for all of you on Spotify, I see you, man. You're doing such a great job, and you are just helping us get those ratings. What happens is the reason why we ask you to make sure you subscribe to the channels and make sure you are following all the things is the more people that do, the more the algorithm algorithms say this is something we should be sharing with people. And so it we want to get the word out more that we have a community of people that are reading their Bible together, and that's how we do that. And so it doesn't cost you anything, but it helps us in those algorithms. And make sure you're going to the Bible breakdown discussion on Facebook. There's an amazing group of people helping us grapple with God's word, and you can find that on Facebook. You can also go to the Biblebreakdown.com. We have all of that right there for you. Well, if you've been with us over the past just couple of weeks now, walking through the book of Genesis and seeing as God sets in order how he made all of this, and he is reminding the Jewish people they're at Mount Sinai, they've been liberated from Egypt, and he is just saying, This is how it happened, and it's not perfect, that these are real people that God was working with. And if you remember, what happened at one point is when Abraham was he was challenged by God. If you will leave the place called Ur, and you'll go to Canaan, where I'm gonna send you, I'm gonna make you a great nation. Well, he gets to Canaan, and there is this famine. And so he goes down to Egypt to get away from the famine, you know, you know, like foreshadowing there. And as he does, you know, he, you know, the um the people are looking at at Sarai, who's now Sarah, and they go, Man, that girl's that girl's really nice looking. She's really, really pretty. And Abraham is saying, This is not good for me. They're gonna kill me and take you. So why don't you say that you are my sister? Which turns out to be kind of true. Yeah, they're they're like half brother and sister. And and so they don't kill him, and they actually take her away until they discover that they've been lied to, and the Pharaoh basically was like, Don't do ever do that again. That was terrible. Oh, that's horrible. And God saved Abraham and Sarah and all that through that. Well, now we see some other things that are starting to happen, and we see that Abraham had not learned his lesson. God has told him you're gonna have a kid. God has said you're gonna be a great nation, but when the pressure is on, instead of turning to God, Abraham is still trying to be independent of God and take care of it all by himself. This is also how we got Ishmael. But here we go. Genesis chapter 20, verse 1 says this. Abraham moved south to the Negev and lived there for a while between Kadesh and Shur, and then he moved on to Gerar. While living as a foreigner, Abraham introduced his wife Sarah by saying, She is my sister. So King Abimelech of Gerar sent for Sarah and had her brought to him at his palace. But that night God came to Abimelech in a dream and told him, You are a dead man, for the woman you have taken is already married. But Abimelech had not slept with her yet. So he said, Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation? Didn't Abraham tell me she is my sister? And she herself said, Yes, he is my brother. I acted in complete innocence, my hands are clean. In the dream God responded, Yes, I know you're innocent. That's why I kept you from sinning against me, and why I did not let you touch her. Now return the woman to her husband, and he will pray for you, for he is a prophet, and then you will live. But if you don't return her to him, you can be sure that you and all your people will die. Abimelech got up early the next morning and quickly called his servants together. When he told them what had happened, his men were terrified. Then Abimelech called for Abraham. What have you done to us? he demanded. What crime have I committed that deserves treatment like this, making me and my kingdom guilty of this great sin? No one should ever do what you have done. Whatever possessed you to do such a thing? Abraham replied, I thought this is a godless place. They will want my wife, and they will kill me to get her. She really is my sister, though, for we both had the same father, but different mothers, and I married her. And when God called me to leave my father's home to travel from place to place, I told her, Do me a favor, wherever we go, tell the people that I am your brother. Then Abimelech took some of his sheep and goats and cattle and male and female servants and presented them to Abraham. He also returned his wife, Sarah, to him. Then Abimelech said, Look, over my land and choose any place where you would like to live. And he said to Sarah, Look, I am giving you your brother, I'm giving your brother a thousand pieces of silver in place of all these witnesses. This is to compensate you for any wrong I may have done to you. This will settle any claim against me, and your reputation is cleared. Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female servants, so they could have children. For the Lord had caused all the women to be infertile because of what had happened with Abraham's wife. Hmm, Sarah. Oh my goodness. Well, so what's going on here is he's back up to his old ways. He is he is in a pagan area, and so he is saying, Win with the pagans, act like pagans. Yo, business is business. I don't have to keep my morals, I don't have to keep my integrity. These people don't know Yahweh, so I'm gonna live according to the rules of the road. You know, them fight fire with fire. They're gonna be mean to me. I'm gonna be mean right back to them. And what Abimelech doesn't realize is he doesn't realize that Abraham's supposed to be something different. He's supposed to be following after Yahweh, he's supposed to be trusting in God. He has no idea. And so therefore he is just okay, well, we're gonna abide by the rules of the road here. And it wasn't until God stepped in, and then Abimelech's looking at him going, I thought you were supposed to be something different. You know, and and and Abraham's excuse was, well, I mean, you don't know God, so I didn't think you'd you know really, you know, honor God, so I was just gonna I was just gonna be horrible like you're horrible. Well, great job, Abraham, you know, and God got him out of it, God blessed him, but it ruined his reputation with with Abimelech. And be only God saved his personal reputation, but but Abraham now is look looks terrible, you know? And how many times have we done the same things? We can't we can't think a bad thing about Abraham. How many times have we said, well, you know what? This isn't the church, this is this is the boardroom. So I'm on business is business. I have had wonderful business leaders, people who I would call, like I'm thinking of a couple of guys right now, I would call them men of God. They they love the Lord, but they have told me, hey Brandon, when you're dealing with real estate agents, when you're dealing with contractors, you're dealing with whatever, business is business. They're not gonna operate by your Christian worldview. And so you need to operate by their worldview or they're gonna run all over you. And you know, that's that makes sense unless you realize that God has sent me and you into the world to be different. Now that doesn't mean a pushover. We can we can have boundaries and integrity at the same time. No, you're not gonna treat me that way, but I'm also not gonna treat you that way. You may try to skirt the rules and you may try to slander, you may try to have a, you know, to blackmail or extort or whatever. I'm gonna show you that you can actually have integrity, honesty, and move forward without having a s uh a seared conscience. That's how we show that we're different. And that's what Abraham was supposed to do. But instead, he's human, like the rest of us, and he compromised his integrity because he thought, well, I'm already in a place of compromised integrity. But what difference does it make? What kind of difference can it make when we refuse to operate by the rules of the world, but instead we operate by the rules of God? It makes all the difference in the world. Makes all the difference in the world. On social media, when everybody's attacking one another, what about the one person who's not a pushover, but they're also not attacking? They're not playing according to the rules of social media. They're not trying to get one up on somebody else, but they're taking the high road over and over and over. You know what starts to happen? People start to go, I think they really mean what they say. I think they really do believe what they say they believe. And look at how God helps them always land on their feet. Maybe there is something to this whole thing. That's what we've been sent to do. Abraham messed up this time, but God doesn't stop working with him. We're gonna mess up from time to time. God doesn't stop working on us. The idea is just to always fall forward a little bit closer to him. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, for how you're always working with us, on us, in us. And I pray, God, as we continue to go through this life, you'll continue to have your way. We celebrate you today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. The greatest miracle in all the Bible is Genesis 1-1. It says, in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. If that's possible, anything is possible. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Genesis chapter 21.
