A long-awaited promise finally arrives and somehow it doesn’t make life easier. Genesis 21 gives us Isaac’s birth, Sarah’s laughter, and a moment that should feel like pure celebration and then it pivots into conflict, grief, and the heartbreaking exile of Hagar and Ishmael. That mix is exactly why this chapter feels so honest: God keeps his word, but he doesn’t keep it in a vacuum.

We walk through the full Bible story arc in Genesis 21, from Abraham and Sarah’s miracle in old age to the painful fallout of earlier choices. We sit with Abraham’s torn heart as he sends his son away, and we watch God meet Hagar in the wilderness with compassion, provision, and a future. If you’ve ever wondered whether your messy feelings mean you’re missing God, this chapter offers a steadier answer: sometimes God is answering one prayer while you’re still waiting on another.

We also talk about why Beersheba matters, how the Abimelech treaty shows Abraham’s growing stability, and what it means to “celebrate the wins” while you “trust God in the tension.” This is practical Christian encouragement rooted in Scripture, built for daily Bible study, and aimed at helping you know God one step at a time.

Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Genesis chapter 21. And today's title is Baby Time. It is Baby Time. And it's, you know how life is, is there's always like a celebration and it's complicated at the same time. Well, that's what's going to happen. It's one of the things I love about the Bible is that it's true. It happened to real people who are really who are living real lives inspired by God. And it's just so amazing. So if you have your Bibles, want to get ready for Genesis chapter 21 and all of the drama that's about to happen. Also, while you're doing that, pause real quick. It's an amazing group of people doing a wonderful job. And as always, you can get all that information at the Biblebreakdown.com. Well, once again, we are in the book of Genesis, and I want you to imagine that the nation of Israel has been liberated from Egyptian bondage. They're out of this Egyptian bondage, this polytheistic society. And now they are on their way and they have made it to Mount Sinai. Moses has gone up to the top of the mountain. He's come back down with the Ten Commandments, and he says, Okay, everything you have believed is a lie. I'm going to tell you how it all started. And he says, All that polytheism, many gods, things that's going to Egypt, none of that was actually true. Actually, Yahweh is the one who created it all. And here's the proof. And he starts telling them all about it. And he said, and then at some point there was a flood, and then there was the Tower of Babel. And then God said, I am going to show myself through one family, and it's all going to start with Abraham. And so we're hearing the story of Abraham. And God kept telling Abraham, You're going to have a great nation. It's going to be awesome. It's going to be amazing. Abraham's like, that's great and all. But I don't have any kids. And so God said, I'm going to take care of that. In the right time, I'm going to have kids. Well, they get excited and they decide, well, they're going to help God out. And as they try to edge God out of the process and help him, they end up getting a surrogate named Hagar, who's voluntold that she is going to marry Abraham and have a kid. And that's where you get Ishmael. And God is like, Nope, I did not tell you to do that. That is not going to be your promised seed. I'm going to take care of him. He's going to have 12 kids. It's going to be awesome. But that is not what I'm doing. I'm going to give you a child through your legitimate wife, Sarah. And like, any any day now? It's like, been 20 years since this promise has happened, something like that. And so now it's going to happen. So here we go. Finally, this wonderful moment of realizing God keeps his promises, but at the same time, God keeps his promises, but it's not in a vacuum. Other things are happening at the same time. So here we go. God's word says, Genesis 21, verse 1. The Lord kept his word and did for Sarah exactly what he had promised. She became pregnant, and she gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age. This happened just at just the time God said it would. Abraham named him Isaac. Eight days after Isaac was born, Abraham circumcised him as God had commanded. Abraham was one hundred years old when Isaac was born. Sarah declared, The Lord has brought me laughter. All who hear about this will laugh with me. And which that's what Isaac means, is means laughter. Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse a baby? Yet I have given Abraham a son in his old age. And when Isaac grew up and he was about to be weaned, Abraham prepared a huge feast to celebrate the occasion. But Sarah saw Ishmael, the son of Abraham, and the Egyptian servant Hagar making fun of her son Isaac. And so she turned to Abraham and demanded, Get rid of that slave woman and her son. He is not going to share the inheritance with my son Isaac. I won't have it. This upset Abraham very much, because Ishmael was his son. But God told Abraham, Don't be upset over the boy and your servant. Do whatever Sarah tells you, for Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted. But I will also make a nation of the descendants of Hagar's son because he is your son too. So Abraham got up early the next morning, prepared food in a container of water, and strapped them to Hagar's shoulders. Then he sent her away with their son, and she wandered aimlessly in the wilderness of Bersheba. When the water was gone, she put the boy in the shade of a bush, and she went and sat down by herself about a hundred yards away. I don't want to watch the boy die, she said, and she burst into tears. But God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, Hagar, what's wrong? Don't be afraid. God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. Go to him, comfort him, for I will make a great nation of his descendants. Then God opened Hagar's eyes and she saw a well full of water, and she quickly filled her water container and gave the boy a drink. And God was with the boy as he grew up in the wilderness, and he became a skillful archer, and he settled in the wilderness of Peron, and his mother arranged for him to marry a woman from the land of Egypt. About this time Abimelech, pause, remember Abimelech, the one that almost took Sarah? Okay, Abimelech came with Pikol, his army commander to visit Abraham. God is obviously with you, helping you in everything you do, Abimelech said. Swear to me in God's name that you will never deceive me. Almost like, you know, in quotes, like you did before my children, or any of my descendants. I have been loyal to you, so now swear that you will be loyal to me, to this country where you are living as a foreigner. Abraham replied, Yeah, I swear to it. Then Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well that Abimelech's servants had taken by force from Abraham's servants. Well, this is the first I've heard of it, Abimelech answered. I have no idea who is responsible. So I have no idea who is responsible. You have never complained about this before. Abraham gave some of his sheep, goats, and cattle to Abimelech, and they made a treaty. But Abraham also took seven additional female lambs and set them off by themselves. Abimelech asked, Why have you set these seven apart from the others? Abimelech replied, Please accept these seven lambs. Or Abraham replied, Please accept these seven lambs to show your agreement that I dug this well. Then he named the place Bersheba, which means well of the oath, because that is where they had sworn the oath. After making their covenant at Bersheba, Abimelech left with Pechol and the commander of his army, and they returned to the home of the land to the land of the Philistines. Then Abraham planted a tamaris tree in Bersheba, and there he worshipped the Lord, the eternal God. And Abraham lived as a foreigner in Philistine country for a long time. Wow. You know, one of the things that's also really awesome about this is that we are slowly hearing them name things that you see throughout the rest of the Bible. Like even you'll you'll see that Bersheba was was a certain part of you know the more the southern area of Canaan. And so you'll have from from Dan to Beersheba when they're talking about the breadth, the you know the length of all of Israel, and they named it there. So you're you're watching what eventually would be commonplace created in these moments. But what we see here is a wonderful, wonderful lesson, and that is this that God fulfills his promises, but to also remember that he doesn't fulfill these promises in a vacuum. One of the things that we that we lose sight of when we watch movies and read fictional stories, and I think all those things are wonderful. I know I give them a hard time, but they're wonderful. But we watch this very linear story where everything comes together at the end, you know, and the bad guy loses, the good guy wins, and it's all just kind of done and simple and wrapped up in a boat. And then we look at our lives and we go, well, you know, God did work that miracle, but at the same time, I still got these other things that are problems. I thought my life was supposed to be simple and easy, because that's what the movies say. Well, what I think one of the things I love about God's word is that God's word doesn't say that. He doesn't say that if you follow God, everything's gonna be simple and easy and uncomplicated. As a matter of fact, Jesus said, in this life you will have trouble, but take heart, I've overcome the world, which means I've already overcome everything you're gonna go through, and you're gonna go through some things. And so what's happening is is in one moment, God or Abraham is celebrating God's faithfulness, and at the other time, the faithfulness of God is also creating tension in this other area. Now, did he did he do what he's supposed to do? Uh that's complicated because he he did honor God and he removed Ishmael from the situation, but at the same time, did he take care of her properly? You know, I wonder if it's a situation where he said, okay, God's gonna take care of her, so I'm gonna help her get to her next step, and I'm gonna trust that God's gonna help her after that. That could have been it. Or he could have just, once again, made another mistake. We we we don't know. But at the same time, it's wonderful to realize that it's okay if God is answering one prayer while you still have other prayers that need to be answered. Where God is faithful in one area and you're still hoping him for him to be faithful in another. That doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong. Now, does it mean you could be doing something wrong? Yeah, maybe. But it doesn't necessarily mean that. You know, I've had people I've talked to before who would say, you know, Pastor, I just feel like something's wrong. Well, why? Well, God's working in this area, but he's not in this area. And and I've in the times past, I would look and go, yeah, that's right. That's it's kind of messed up. Like I don't I don't know what's going on. And as time has gone on, I'm saying, well, what is so peculiar about that? What is the old if God was in control, everything would work out? Absolutely. But not always at the same time. But many times God is working on things at different paces and in different settings for different reasons that we're only going to know about one in eternity. And so what we're supposed to do is to celebrate the wins and trust God in the areas of tension. So I want to ask you this question. Is that what's going on in your life? To be do we do we find ourselves sometimes getting overly balanced, uh unbalanced in one way or the other where we celebrate all of our wins and we ignore our tensions? That's not healthy. Or do we ignore our wins, our celebrations while only focusing on our tensions? That's not healthy. But instead, they should help balance one another. We celebrate our wins and they give us hope to embrace the tension of our life. And then while we're embracing the tension, we don't get discouraged because we understand that there's wins. You think maybe God's doing that on purpose? I think so. I think that maybe sending Abra sending Ishmael away was probably one of the hardest things Abraham had had to do at that point in his life. Because that was his son. You imagine sending you uh if you're if you're a parent sending one of your children away, knowing you're never going to see them again, had to be one of the hardest things in the world. At the same time, he's celebrating a promise fulfilled by God. But is it possible that he was able to send Ishmael away because he's also looking at Isaac and he's going, God, you are so faithful. And you brought Isaac in my life at the right time. So I choose to remember that as I'm trusting you enough to let him go. And on the other end, he's he's able to stay by letting him go because he's looking over there and he's going, I can trust you, God. I can trust you, God. And so I wonder, and it's just my imagination, it's not in the Bible at all, but I wonder if right after he said goodbye to Hagar and right after he said goodbye to Ishmael, he walks back over to Isaac and he says, Boys, Boy, can you can you just come get my lap for a minute? You okay, Daddy? Yeah. I'm just remembering that God's faithful. I just had to do the hardest thing I've ever had to do. And I'm not even sure if it was the right thing. I I feel like it was. I feel like God told me to do that, but it was so hard. So can you just can you just sit with me and just just remind me? Just like laugh for me. Tell me a joke. Remind me that God's faithful. Remind me that God's faithful, because that was so hard. You know what I mean? I just I can I can see it in my eyes right now. What about you? Is it do you need to go find your most recent victory and just hold it for a moment? Maybe it's a person, maybe it's a relationship, maybe, maybe it's a it's a job that God came through with, maybe it's uh something, I don't know what it is, but maybe you just need to write it down, just hold it. And while you are looking at your biggest tension and go, I know God is faithful because of this I hold in my hand. I know he's faithful, so he's gonna be faithful. He's gonna be faithful. And can I tell you? He is. And maybe God does both at the same time, whatever a reason. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much. But you are faithful. You are true and holy and good and righteous and all those things. You are so good that I'm thankful for you today, and I celebrate you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. The greatest miracle in the Bible, Genesis 1.1, that says in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Genesis chapter 22.
