Sarah’s story can be easy to overlook until you slow down and feel the weight of Genesis 23. Abraham gets the headline moments, but Sarah lives the long obedience: leaving home, trusting a promise she didn’t personally hear, and staying faithful through years of uncertainty. Her death isn’t just a historical footnote, it’s a moment that exposes the quiet heroes in our lives and asks whether we recognize them while they’re still here.

We read the chapter closely and unpack why Abraham insists on purchasing the cave of Machpelah at full price, in public, with witnesses. It’s a real estate deal, but it’s also a spiritual marker: the first permanent piece of the promised land owned by Abraham’s family. Along the way, we talk about grief, dignity, and what it means to honor someone in a way that lasts. If you care about Bible study, Genesis, and how Scripture shapes everyday life, this conversation lands in a very practical place.

The challenge is simple and uncomfortable in the best way: don’t wait for a funeral to say what you mean. Pray, ask the Holy Spirit to bring someone to mind, and then take the next step to tell them their value with clarity and sincerity. If this helped you, subscribe, share the episode with a friend, and leave a five-star review so more people can find the Bible Breakdown Podcast.

Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Genesis chapter 23. And today's title is The Death of a Hero. The Death of a Hero. I want to tell you that I've never really thought about this until we've been reading through this together. But if there's an unsung hero in the entire book of Genesis, and there's many, but if there was one, it'd be Sarah. Think about it for just a moment. God speaks to Abraham and he says, I want you to go, my friend. I want you to get out of here, go to this other land. I'm going to bless you. Praise the Lord, all that good stuff. He doesn't say any of that to Sarah. So he, Sarah's just having to trust that Abraham hasn't gone completely crazy. And listen, some of the stuff he does, you're like, no, I'm pretty sure he's crazy. You know, but Sarah follows him all this different way. Sarah believes for that that God's going to do all these things. And then you imagine the conversation when they got back home and Isaac from yesterday's chapter, and Isaac tells Sarah what Abraham did. Sarah is the unsung hero, and she finally gets to go be with the Lord in this chapter. So we'll get to all that in just a moment. So I want you to get your Bibles out, get ready to go. While you're doing that, make sure you take just a moment, like, share, and subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you leave us a five-star review on the podcast. It really does help. And make sure you are going to the now Bible breakdown page on Facebook. We love it. We have moved everything over there. So make sure you go and you like, follow that page, make sure you follow all the posts, and you can get all that information at the BibleBreakdown.com. Well, if you've been with us for a while now, then you know we've been going through the book of Genesis. And I just love this idea. I mean, once again, let's think about it for just a moment. The nation of Israel has been slaves 400 years. And so for 400 years, they've been trying to follow Yahweh, but they've been living as slaves in a polytheistic society. And so finally, through great acts of miracles and all of this, God rescues them from Egyptian bondage. They get to Mount Sinai, they see the fire on the mountain, which we'll get into in the book of Exodus. And then God says, all this mess you've been believing about polytheism and whatever that you've been trying to push against was all wrong. I created the heavens and the earth. Let me tell you how it really happened. And that's what God does. He he talks about the six days of creation. He talks about Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel. And then he finally talks about, you know, Noah and then Abraham. And he says, Through Abraham, I'm going to show myself to the world. And that's your legacy, Jewish people. And he starts telling them about that. And you imagine that for who knows how many years they had this slave mentality. And God is showing them, you're not slaves, you're my special possession. And once again, through them, now we as Christians are grafted into that family. So he's just saying, you thought you were slaves. You're actually kings and queens in the presence of God. And so it's this amazing thing that he's showing them that legacy. And it's this wonderful story about how God has been doing all this amazing stuff. And it begins in Genesis through 1 through 12. And then the story of Abraham starts. And now, after all these journeys that they have been on, it is now time to pass on to the next generation. And so today's chapter is all about the passing of Sarah, the wonderful matriarch of our faith. So here we go. Let's read. Genesis 23, verse 1 says this. Now when Sarah was 127 years old, now that was that was old even for then, okay? Because remember, no one's living like they did the first part of Genesis. She died at Kiriath Arba, now called Hebron, in the land of Cana. So she was able to die in the land that God had promised them. There Abraham mourned and wept for her. Then, leaving her body, he said to the Hittite elders, Here I am, a stranger and a foreigner among you. Please sell me a piece of land so that I can give my wife a proper burial. And the Hittites replied to Abraham, Listen, my lord, you are an honored prince among us. Choose the finest of our tombs to bury her there. No one will refuse to help you in this way. Then Abraham bowed low before the Hittites, and he said, Since you are willing to help me in this way, be so kind and ask Ephron, son of Zohar, to let me buy his cave in Machfila down at the end of his field. I will pay full price in the presence of witnesses, so I will have a permanent burial place for my family. Ephron was sitting there among the other elders, and he answered Abraham as the others listened, speaking publicly before all the Hittite elders of the town. No, my lord, he said to Abraham, please listen to me. I will give you the field and the cave. Here in the presence of the people, I give it to you. Go and bury your dead. Abraham again bowed low before the citizens of the land, and he replied to Ephron, and everyone listened. No, no, listen to me. I will buy it from you. Let me pay full price for the land so I can bury my dead there. Nephan replied or answered Abraham, My Lord, please listen to me. The land is worth four hundred pieces of silver, but what is that between friends? Go ahead and bury your dead. So Abraham agreed to Ephron's price and paid the amount he had suggested, four hundred pieces of silver, weighing according to the market standard. And the Hittite elders witnessed the transaction. So Abraham bought the plot of land belonging to Ephron, the at Macphiliah, near Mamre. This included the field itself, the cave that was in it, and all the surrounding trees. And it was transferred to Abraham as his permanent possession in the presence of the Hittite elders at the city gate. Then Abraham buried his wife Sarah there in the cave at Macphiliah near Mamre, also called Hebron. So the field and the cave were transferred from the Hittites to Abraham for the use as a permanent burial place. So what a wonderful moment that he was able to honor his wife. And this this really speaks to something that we still do, and I think it's something that is so very important. And that is to take a moment and to honor those who have passed away. You know, one of the things that I love that we're doing in our local culture here is we we are there's nothing wrong with funeral services, and I think they're great, but one of the things I love even more is that recently I've seen where people get together and they will have what they call celebrations of life, where they have one more time to honor those who have passed away. And I I love it. I as a matter of fact, I have had a chance to be a part of a few of those recently, and one of the things I love the most is when people get up and they have one more opportunity before other people to be able to celebrate and to be able to say what worth and value that person was to them and share stories and wonderful moments, and it can be a great opportunity to really bless that person, and it can be a great thing. But here's my challenge don't wait until then to show someone their value. I know many times we can feel awkward, it can feel difficult, and and relationships are complicated because on one end, I love you and I appreciate you, on the other end, I got some things to say to you. You know, it can be very complicated sometimes. But I've had times when I have loved people and I I didn't tell them the way I wanted to, and then before I had the opportunity, they were gone. So don't be like me. Don't be like many others, and that is if someone in your life is worthy of showing honor to, don't wait until their funeral, but do it before him. I love that Abraham did this. I think this is wonderful that he was willing to pay this great price to have a proper place to honor his wife one last time. There's nothing wrong with that, but it also reminds me to make sure that the only time we show honor is not laying them to rest, but also in their life. So here's my question to you Who is someone today that you love, that you honor, that you appreciate, and do they know? Now, by that I don't mean that twenty years ago, while you were sharing a cup of coffee, you said, Hey, I kind of like you. Not that. Have you looked them in the eye and have you said, you know what, you've you and I have never really had a chance to talk about this, but I wouldn't be who I am today if it wasn't for you. What if you prayed and asked the Holy Spirit to bring someone like that to your attention? Maybe he already has. And if so, what if you scheduled a time to take a moment, look them in the eye, and tell them what they mean to you? You don't never know, but they may need it more than you can imagine. Let's pray together right now. Holy Spirit, thank you so much that you are with us and that you are for us. I'm so thankful, God, that even in this moment right now, you're probably bringing people to our mind. And if not, I pray that before the day is out, you'll bring someone to our mind and help us remember that, Lord, if it wasn't for your ministry through them, where would we be? You'll give us the courage to take that next step and to show value to that person. Because we have no idea how much we may need it, or how much they may need it, how much we need each other. I'm thankful for that today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And what God's Word says in Genesis 1, verse 1, it says, In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And if that verse is possible, anything is possible. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Genesis chapter 24.
