The Bible Breakdown: Daily Bible Reading
Genesis 24: A Match Made By Heaven
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A stranger shows up at a well and asks for a drink. Minutes later, a young woman is hauling what amounts to hundreds of gallons of water for ten camels, and the future of a biblical family line is changing in real time. Genesis 24 is one of the most unforgettable stories in the book of Genesis, and we love how it proves that God’s providence often hides inside everyday chores.
We follow Abraham’s servant as he takes an oath, travels to Abraham’s relatives, and prays a dangerously specific prayer for guidance. Then Rebekah steps onto the scene and does far more than anyone would expect, revealing the kind of character that can carry covenant promises forward. Along the way we talk arranged marriage in the ancient world, the servant’s worship response when God answers, and the moment Rebekah is asked directly if she’s willing to go.
The second half turns the story into a practical faith challenge for modern life: you never know what an act of kindness will do. We also keep it honest about boundaries, because Christian kindness is not the same as being careless. If you want a clear Bible study, a story-driven Christian podcast, and a takeaway you can live today, Genesis 24 delivers.

SPEAKER_01Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Genesis chapter 24. And today's title is A Match Made by Heaven. Match Made by Heaven. But listen, I gotta be honest with you, I almost didn't call it that. I almost called it Rebecca the Superwoman or She-Hulk or something like that. Because this one is amazing, all right? And she she earned this. This is probably one of the most interesting engagement stories that are in the entire Bible. I mean, it is just miracles all over the place. It's crazy, kind of silly, but it's awesome. Okay, just the way God does this. And so you want to get your popcorn out for this one. Get your popcorn, get your coffee, get your Bibles. Genesis chapter 24, the New Living translation. We're gonna get to that in just a moment. But as always, while you're getting all that out, make sure you take just a moment, like, share, subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. And make sure you're going to the Bible Breakdown Facebook page. Make sure you follow the page and you read those devotions every single day because there's an amazing team doing a wonderful job. And you can get all of that at the Biblebreakdown.com. Well, once again, if you've read in the Bible with us for the past couple of weeks now, we're going through the book of Genesis, one chapter at a time, and we are learning how God is rewriting the correct history of how he made everything to the Jewish people. They're recently liberated slaves, and he is saying all the lies you've believed about that polytheistic world, not true. This is what's true, and he is setting out for them the true history of the world. And we've gone through, you know, uh Cain and Abel and the flood of Noah, which was crazy, and then Abraham and all of that, and then the most uncomfortable camping trip ever with Isaac. Sarah's passed away, and now it is time for Isaac to have a wife. And there is a very interesting way that Abraham wants to do this. And so we're going to read about this in chapter 24 and just read about the story of how Abraham goes about finding a wife for Isaac. Because back then they mainly would do arranged marriages. And as a when when I was looking to get married, that was not a good idea. I did not want an arranged marriage. Now that I have daughters of my own, I think it's a great idea. It's amazing how different times and seasons of life change your perspective on this. But let's read this together. Genesis chapter 24, verse 1 says this. Abraham was now a very old man, and the Lord had blessed him in every way. One day Abraham said to his oldest servant, the man in charge of his household, Take an oath by putting your hand under my thigh. Odd, I know, but that's how they did it back then. Verse 3 Swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not allow my son to marry one of these local Canaanite women. Instead, go to my homeland, to my relatives, and find a wife there for my son Isaac. And the servant asked, But what if I can't find a young woman who is willing to travel so far from home? Should I then take Isaac there to live among your relatives in the land you came from? No, Abraham responded, Be careful never to take my son there. For the Lord, the God of heaven, took me from my father's house and my native land, solemnly promised to give this land to my descendants. He will send his angel ahead of you, and he will see to it that you find a wife there for my son. If she is unwilling to come back with you, then you are free from this oath of mine, but under no circumstances are you to take my son there. So the servant took an oath by putting his hand under the thigh of his master, probably a little weird, and he swore to follow Abraham's instructions. So then he loaded ten of Abraham's camels with all kinds of expensive gifts from his master, and he travelled to distant Aram Naharim. There he went to the town of Abraham's brother Nahor had settled, and he made the camels kneel beside the well just outside the town. This was evening, and the women were coming out to draw water. O Lord, God of my master Abraham, he prayed, please give me success today, and show unfailing love to my master Abraham. See I am standing here beside this spring, and the young women of the town are coming out to draw water. This is my request. I will take I will ask one of them, please give me a drink from your jug. And if she says, Yes, have a drink, and I will come and water your camels too. Let her be the one you have selected to be Isaac's wife. This is how I will know that you have shown unfailing love to my master. Now pause. This is a miracle. He is asking for a miracle. Here's why. Okay, that is a four and a zero, 40 gallons of water. She's got a pitcher on her head, probably, you know, carrying it around. Let's say that's five gallons of water. Okay. That equals, and he said there were 10. Okay, so that means 400 gallons of water. And if the pitcher on top of her head is five gallons, you know what that equals? That equals a lot of trips. A whole lot of trips. Somebody put in the comment section on the YouTube channel how many gallons of water and if she 400 gallons of water, how many trips? If it's a five-gallon bucket, basically, that she's having to go to the watering trough, empty it, come back and get some more, and go back again. How many trips is that? So he's asking for a miracle. A lady who is not afraid to be gone a while. Okay, she's gonna have a lot of work to do. But look what happens. Verse 15. Before he had finished praying, he saw a young woman named Rebecca coming out with her water jug on her shoulder. She was a daughter of Bethuel, who was son of Abraham's brother Nahor, and his wife Melkah. Rebecca was very beautiful and old enough to be married, but she was still a virgin. She went down to the spring, filled her jug, and came up again. Running over to her, the servant said, Please give me a little drink of water from your jug. Why, yes, my lord, she said, Have a drink. And she quickly lowered her jug from her shoulder and gave him a drink. And when she had given him a drink, she said, I'll draw water for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink. Four hundred gallons of water. So she quickly emptied her jug into the watering trough and ran back to the well to draw water for all his camels. Sir, the servant watched her in silence, probably also in like astonishment, wondering whether or not the Lord had given him success in his mission. Pause. Uh yeah, because who else? You notice none of the other ladies were like, hey, we'll help you too. They were like, girl, you crazy. I'm gonna go on home. You go ahead and do your 12 million trips back and forth, right? But here we go. Verse 22. Then at last, which can we just pause and say too, you didn't help her? Joker? You didn't help her? All right. Then at last, when the camels had finished drinking, she took a gold, he took a gold ring for her nose and two large gold bracelets for her wrists. Whose daughter are you? He asked. And please tell me, would your father have any room to put us up for the night? Pause. You done asked for 400 plus gallons of water, and now you're looking for free room and board. You know this must be a miracle. Verse 24, I am the daughter of Bethel, she replied. My grandparents are Nahor and Melkah. Yes, we have plenty of straw and feed for the camels and have room for guests. The man bowed low and worshiped the Lord. Praise the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, he said. The Lord has shown unfailing love and faithfulness to my master, for he has led me straight to my master's relatives. When the young woman ran home to tell her family everything that had happened, you notice she's running everywhere she goes. Verse 29, Rebecca had a brother named Laban. Dun dun dun. We'll find out about Laban soon enough. Scoundrel. And ran out to meet the man at the spring. He had seen the nose ring and the bracelets on the sister's wrist and had heard Rebecca tell what the man had said. So he rushed out to the spring, where the man was still standing beside his camels. Laban said to him, Come, stay with us. You are blessed by the Lord. Why are you standing here outside the town when I have a room already for you and a place prepared for your camels? So the man went home with Laban, and Laban unloaded the camels, gave him straw for their bedding, fed him, and provided water for the man and the camel drivers to wash their feet. And then food was served. But Abraham's servant said, I don't want to eat until I have told you why I have come. All right, said Laban, tell us. I am Abraham's servant, he explained, and the Lord has greatly blessed my master, and has become he has become a wealthy man. And the Lord has given him flocks of sheep and goats and herds of cattle and fortune and silver and gold, and many male and female servants, and camels and donkeys. When Sarah, my master's wife, was very old, she gave birth to my master's son, and my master has given him everything he owns, and my master made me take an oath and said, Do not allow my son to marry one of these local Canaanite women. Go instead to my father's house and to my relatives, and find a wife there for my son. But I said to my master, What if I can't find a young woman who is willing to go back with me? And he responded, Lord, the Lord in whose presence I have lived, will send his angel with you, and will make your mission successful. Yes, you must find a wife for my son, from my relatives, from my father's family. Then you will have fulfilled your obligation. But if you go to my relatives and they refuse to let her go, you will be free from my oath. So today when I came to the spring, I prayed this prayer, O Lord, God of my master Abraham, please give me success on this mission. See, I am standing here beside this spring, and this is my request. When a young woman comes to draw water, I will say to her, please, give me a little drink of the water from your jug. And if she says, Yes, have a drink, and I will draw water for your camels too, let her be the one you have selected to be the wife of my master's son. Before I had finished praying in my heart, I saw Rebecca coming out with her water jug on her shoulder, and he went down, and she went went down to the spring and drew water. And so I said to her, Please give me a drink. And she quickly lowered her jug from her shoulder and said, Yes, have a drink, and I will also water your camels too. So I drank, and then she watered the camels. Then I asked, Whose daughter are you? And she replied, I am the daughter of Bethel. The grandparents, my grandparents are Nahor and Malka. So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists. Then I bowed low and worshiped the Lord. I praised the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, because he had led me straight to my master's niece to be his son's wife. So tell me, will you or won't you show unfailing love and faithfulness to my master? Please tell me yes or no, and then I'll know what to do next. And then Laban and Bethuel replied, The Lord has obviously brought you here, so there's nothing we can say. Here is Rebecca, take her and go. Yes, let her be the wife of your master's son, as the Lord has directed. When Abraham's servant heard this answer, he bowed down to the ground and worshiped the Lord. And then he brought out silver and gold jewelry and clothing and presents to Rebecca, and gave expensive presents to her brother and her mother. And they ate their meal, and the servants and the men with him stayed there overnight. But early the next morning Abraham's servant said, Please send me back to my master. But we want Rebecca to stay with us for at least ten days, her brother and her mother said. Then she can go. But he said, Don't delay me. The Lord has made my mission successful. Now send me back so I can return to my master. Well, they said, We'll call Rebecca and ask her what she thinks. So they called Rebecca. Are you willing to go with this man? They asked her. And she replied, Yes, I will go. And so they said goodbye to Rebecca, and they sent her away with Abraham's servants and his men. And the women who had been Rebecca's childhood nurse, or the woman who had been Rebecca's childhood nurse, went along with her, and she gave her this blessing as she parted, or they did. Our sister, may you become mother of many millions. May your descendants be strong and conquer the cities of their enemies. And then Rebecca and her servant girls mounted the camels and followed the man. So Abraham's servant took Rebecca and went on his way. Meanwhile Isaac, whose home is in the Negev, had returned from Bere Laoi. One evening he was walking and meditating in the fields, looking up, and he saw the camels coming. And Rebecca looked up and saw Isaac, she quickly dismounted from her camel. Who is that man walking through the fields to meet us? she asked the servant, and he replied, It is my master. So Rebecca covered her face with a veil, and the servant told Isaac everything he had done. And Isaac brought Rebecca into his mother's tent, and she became his wife. And he loved her deeply, for she was a special comfort to him after the death of his mother. Wow. We just imagine I mean imagine you wake up that morning and you're like, I'm just gonna go to the chores, you know, I'm gonna go get some water, and while you're there, you see this random dude who needs a sip of water, and you're like, you know, he's got these camels and he doesn't have anything. Let me help the guy out. And before you know it, you're headed off to get married. I mean, what an amazing story. And so, what can we learn from this? And that is this you never know what an act of kindness will do. You have you never know what God may be orchestrating, what God may be orchestrating that you have no idea. The Bible says nowhere that, you know, you you wonder, you know, like, okay, so was Rebecca kind of looking around and she noticed this guy seemed to have a lot of jewelry in his bag and kind of noticed he looked like he came from money, and so she was like, hey, well, this joker's asking me for water. Maybe there's a little bling in here for me. She's not doing any of that. She's just showing kindness to this guy. Little did she know that act of kindness is going to change her life. Can I tell you? We never know. You know, the Bible says in the book of Hebrews that sometimes we entertain angels unaware. We never know what kindness will do. And I know we live in a world where there's people around us who will sometimes want to take advantage of our kindness. So we should always put healthy boundaries in place so that we make sure that we're not being taken advantage of. But can I tell you, I would rather be taken advantage of because I'm worshiping God by serving someone else than to never be taken advantage of, but also never be kind. So when you weigh in the balance, you can trust that God will always reward you when you do the right thing for the right reason at the right time. So I'm gonna encourage you today, maybe, what if instead of you know seeing the world as as victims and villains, what if instead you looked at possible neighbors with proper boundaries, be careful in all that you do, but also who can I be a blessing to? Because you never know, you may be looking at your next miracle. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. I thank you, God, that you're always doing more than we can see. You're always working in ways that we can't see. Lord, that we live in a world sometimes that is so fast-paced, and there's just so many things that are going on that sometimes we can run right by our next miracle. I pray today you will help us to be somebody else's miracle. Let us show kindness, let us have hope, let us assume the best in somebody today and take that next step in Jesus' name. Amen. Well, God's Word says in Genesis 1, verse 1, that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And if that verse is true, and it is, then anything else is possible. Let's live that impossible life with God today. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Genesis chapter 25.
