A blessing gets stolen, a family splinters, and one tiny detail exposes the whole con: the voice doesn’t match. We’re in Genesis 27 today, breaking down the moment Jacob and Rebekah pull off what we call the “Great Blessing Heist” and how Isaac ends up trusting taste, smell, and touch over the one signal that should have stopped everything. If you’ve ever felt pulled toward a choice that seemed right in the moment but didn’t line up with God’s Word, this chapter will feel uncomfortably familiar.

We walk through the full story of Jacob and Esau, from Isaac’s request for wild game to the costume-level deception with goat skins, to the heartbreaking scene when Esau realizes the blessing is gone. Then we talk about the fallout: bitterness, fear, and the kind of consequences that don’t stay neatly contained to one decision. Genesis doesn’t give us a polished hero story, it gives us an honest one, and that honesty helps our Bible study and our daily discipleship.

The big takeaway is discernment. Counterfeit blessings can look convincing and even feel satisfying, but the clearest test is whether it sounds like the voice of God revealed in Scripture. When something “tastes right” yet contradicts the character of God, it’s time to slow down, hold back, and listen more closely. Well everybody, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Genesis chapter 27, and we're gonna call this the Great Blessing Heist. The Great Blessing Heist. I don't know about you, but if you ever really stop to think about some of these movies that are just considered iconic, that's all about somebody robbing somebody else. Like there's a movie called Oceans 11. And the whole point of the movie is that these people carry out like the perfect crime. And we're we're like celebrating and rooting for the criminals. Like, how does that work? But in today, we're gonna see the greatest heist of all time. And it's really sad. Like nobody wins in this, but that's one of the things I love about the Bible is that it's true. And it doesn't, it doesn't paint a rosy colored picture of the past. It just paints the past because it always highlights how much God loves us in spite of ourselves. And so just get ready for this one. If you've never heard this story before, it's crazy. Okay. So make sure you get your Bibles, get ready to go. Also, make sure you take just a second, pause the video, like, share, subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure to leave us a five-star review on the podcast. It really does help. And make sure you're going to the Bible breakdown social media pages. We've got Facebook pages, we've got Instagram, we've got all the different things, ways to try to connect with you as you are doing life. And make sure you tell somebody else about us as well, because we love reading the Bible together. The more we dig, the more we find. And you can find all that information at thebiblebreakdown.com. Well, if you've been with us over the past several weeks now, we've been reading through Genesis and just watching as God is reorienting the history of the world to the proper order. The uh the Israelites at this point are gathered around Mount Sinai. We'll get to that in the book of Exodus. And he is saying, you've been living in this polytheistic society 400 years as prisoners and slaves, rather, in Egypt, no more. It wasn't a collection of gods that created the world. I did. And I want to tell you, you've been living as slaves, but you're really my chosen people. And I've chosen you to bless the world. And that we are now, as Christians, grafted into that chosen family. And so this is our history as well. And we have Abraham and all the wonderful things that happened to him. And now we've got Isaac. And if you remember, Isaac married Rebecca, and Rebecca had twins, Jacob and Esau. And these guys could not have been more different. Jacob loved to be inside and just do all the things inside the tent. And Esau was an outdoorsman. He loved to hunt. And one day, Esau comes in and he is like super hungry. He's like, ah, I gotta have something to eat. And Jacob's like, Cool, I got some lentil soup here. I'll be glad to give it to you if you'll let me become the head of the household. Like, I'll be in charge. It's called your birthright. And he's like, Well, I mean, Esau says, Well, if I starve to death, it's not gonna do me any good. So sure, you can have you can be the head of the house. Cool. Horrible, horrible decision. He gave up his entire rights as the head of the house or the you know, the firstborn to Jacob. Well, he was still could have gotten the inheritance. So he still gets a double portion because he was the oldest. Well, that's about to change too. And so watch what happens in the the great blessing heist of chapter 27 of Genesis. Here we go, verse one. One day, when Isaac was old and turning blind, he called for Esau, his older son, and said, My son, yes, father, Esau replied, I am now an old man. Isaac said, I don't know when I may die. Take your bow and a quiver full of arrows, and go out into the open country to hunt some wild game for me. Prepare my favorite dish, and bring it here for me to eat. Then I will pronounce a blessing that belongs to you, my firstborn son, before I die. But Rebecca overheard what Isaac had said to his son Esau. So Esau left to hunt for the wild game, and she said to her son Jacob, Listen, I overheard your father say to Esau, Bring me some wild game and prepare me a delicious meal, then I will bless you in the Lord's presence before I die. Now, my son, listen to me, do exactly as I tell you. Go out to the flocks and bring me two fine young goats. Use them to prepare, I'll use them to prepare your father's favorite dish. Then take the food to your father so he can eat it and bless you before he dies. But look, Jacob replied to Rebecca, my brother Esau is a hairy man, and my skin is smooth. What if my father touches me, and he'll see that I'm trying to trick him, and then he'll curse me instead of bless me? But the mother replied, Then let the curse fall on me, my son. Just do what I tell you. Go out and get the goats for me. So Jacob went out and got the young goats for his mother. Rebecca took them, prepared a delicious meal just the way Isaac liked it. And she took Esau's favorite clothes, which were there in the house, and gave them to her younger son Jacob. She covered his arms and the smooth part of his neck with the skin of the young goats, and she gave Jacob the delicious meal, including freshly baked bread. So Jacob took the food to his father. My father, he said, Yes, my son, Isaac answered. Who are you, Esau or Jacob? Jacob replied, What's Esau, your firstborn son? I've done as you've told me, here is the wild game. Now sit up and eat it, so you can give me your blessing. Isaac asked, How did you find it so quickly, my son? The Lord your God put it in my path, Jacob replied. Pause, you stinking liar. Don't blame this on Jesus. Well, don't blame this on Yahweh. All right, here we go, verse 21. Then Isaac said to Jacob, Come closer, so I can touch you and make sure that you really are Esau. So Jacob went closer to his father, and Isaac touched him. The voice is Jacob's, but the hands are Esau's, Isaac said. Pause. You know Esau must have been a hairy joker if he if they put these like these skins on him, and that's a hairy guy. All right, here we go. Verse 23. But he did not recognize Jacob because Jacob's hands felt hairy just like Esau's. So Isaac prepared to bless Jacob. Are you really my son, Esau? He asked. Yes, I am, Jacob replied. Then Isaac said, Now my son, bring me the wild game, let me eat it, and then I will give you my blessing. So Jacob took the food to his father, and Isaac ate it. He also drank the wine that Jacob served him. Then Isaac said to Jacob, Please come a little closer and kiss me, my son. So Jacob went over and kissed him. And when Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he was finally convinced, and he blessed his son. He said, Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of the outdoors, which the Lord has blessed. From the dew of heaven and the richness of earth, may God always give you abundant harvests of grain and bountiful new wine. May many nations become your servants. May they bow down to you. May you be the master over your brothers, and may your mother's sons bow down to you. All who curse you will be cursed, and all who bless you will be blessed. As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and almost before Jacob had left his father, Esau returned from his hunt. Esau prepared a delicious meal and brought it to his father, and then he said, Sit up, my father, and eat my wild game so you can give me your blessing. And Isaac asked him, Who are you? And Esau replied, Well this your son, your firstborn son, Esau. Isaac began to tremble uncontrollably and said, Then who just served me wild game? I have already eaten it, and I have blessed him just before you came, and yes, that blessing must stand. When Esau heard his father's words, he let out a loud and bitter cry. Oh my father, what about me? Bless me too, he begged. And Isaac said, Your brother was here, and he tricked me. He said, He has taken away your blessing. Esau exclaimed, No wonder his name is Jacob, for now he has cheated me twice. First he took my rights as the firstborn, and now he has stolen my blessing. Oh, haven't you saved even one blessing for me? Isaac said to Esau, I have made Jacob your master, and have declared that all his brothers will be his servants. I have guaranteed him an abundance of grain and wine. What is left for me to give you, my son? Esau pleaded, But do you have only one blessing? O my father, bless me too. Then Esau broke down and wept. Finally his father Isaac said to him, You will live away from the richness of the earth, and away from the dew of heaven above. You will live by your sword, and you will serve your brother. But when you decide to break free, you will shake his yoke from your neck. And from time to time, and from that time Esau hated Jacob, because their father had given Jacob the blessing, and Esau began to scheme, I will soon be mourning my father's death, and then I will kill my brother Jacob. But Rebecca heard about Esau's plans, so he sent Jacob and told him, Listen, Esau is consoling himself by plotting to kill you. So listen carefully, my son, get ready, and flee to my brother Laban in Haran. Stay there from him until your brother cools off. Then when he calms down and forgets what you have done to him, I will send for you to come back. Why should I lose both you, both of you in one day? Then Rebekah said to Isaac, I am sick and tired of these local Hittite women. I would rather die than to see Jacob marry one of them. Wow. I mean this is one of the saddest chapters that we've come across in a few chapters because Esau has already lost his rights as the firstborn, and now he wants the blessing of his father. Because at that time, and still to this day, the the blessing of your father is important. And he was, I'm sure he was consoling himself, going, Well, I'm not the firstborn as far as my rights anymore, but I can still be blessed. Well, then Jacob steals that as well. And and I I love this this thought, this this amazing lesson is Isaac is there, and I don't know if he had glaucoma, he had cataracts, whatever it was, but he couldn't see. And but he he it he he couldn't see, but he could hear. And that there's this this mental this this idea that it felt right, it smelled right, it tasted right, but it didn't sound right. And can I tell you so many times in life that happens to us, we can look at the things that the world can provide and it and it feels right, taste right, but it don't sound right. It doesn't sound like God's word. And can I tell you, it's what it sounds like that's the most important. And I think that's the number one lesson is is is Isaac, he he he's trusting in all of his other senses except the one that matters the most. He'd heard that voice over and over and over again, and he knew that voice wasn't Esau, that voice was Jacob. But everything else, you know, seemed to kind of outweigh what he thought until he finally gave him. And how many times has that happened to us in life? Can I can I tell you it there's so many times in life when we're going through things and and and we're so tempted to go this way or to go that way, and it it it it feels right and it it smells right, and and you know, it and it tastes right and all this kind of stuff, and I just want to indulge in all this, but there's that voice. Boy, this isn't God's word. This isn't what God smiles on. Should I pay attention to how it feels? You know, should I pay attention to to what it you know to what it looks like or whatever, or or do I listen to that still small voice of the Holy Spirit? Can I say I've even experienced this in church sometimes? I've experienced things when when when everybody's talking about having a feeling, or everybody's talking about, you know, taste and see that the Lord is good, and that's wonderful, and I'm here for all of that, but if it doesn't line up with the voice of God through his word, then it's better to stay away from it. So here's my question for you today. Not not not in in just in one area, but in all areas of life, are there temptations to go against the what you already know to be the voice of God? Are there temptations to give in to what tastes right, what feels right, what smells right, what's right in the moment? You know, if you gotta think about it, like if it smelled like his favorite dish, there's probably that part of him, there's that appetite in him that's going, you know, yes, it doesn't sound right, but man, it I'm just I'm hungry. Let's get on with it, right? But can I tell you, the most important thing in our lives is the sound. Does it sound like the voice that we recognize as the voice of God? Does it sound like God's word? That's what's most important. And that's the thing that that any of us now, knowing the rest of the story, would would look, would love to go back and say, hey man, anybody can make a dish that tastes good, you know, because apparently you couldn't tell the difference between wild game and a goat. You know what I mean? They had enough spices, but but the the sound is what matter. And then we can go back to ourselves and go, man, anybody can make something that feels good in the moment. What does it sound like? Does it sound like the voice of God? Does it sound like God's word? If not, hold up, hold back, because the real thing is coming soon. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that in this life there are counterfeits of you. There's counterfeit moments, counterfeit blessings. And sometimes it can be so hard, God, to parse out the difference between momentary pleasure and you. But I'm thankful that we have one thing that never fails, and that's the voice. The voice of God that we find through your word. As we read your word, I pray you will help us to know your character, to know who you are, so that we can find our way to you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Anyway, but God's Word says in Genesis 1, verse 1, that in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And if God created it, God controls it. He is in control and he loves you very much. And I do too. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Genesis chapter 28.
