The Bible Breakdown: Daily Bible Reading
Genesis 39: Faithfulness In The Fire
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The hardest spiritual test is not temptation in public, it’s pressure in private when doing the right thing costs you. Today we open Genesis 39 and sit with Joseph in the most frustrating kind of moment: he honors God, refuses compromise, and still gets punished for it. If you’ve ever wondered why integrity doesn’t always pay off quickly, this conversation is for you.
We follow Joseph’s rise in Potiphar’s house, where trust is earned through consistent character and excellent work. Then the story sharpens as Potiphar’s wife escalates temptation day after day, and Joseph draws a clear line: this would be wicked and a sin against God. That single sentence reframes integrity, sexual purity, and leadership ethics as worship, not reputation management. We also slow down at the false accusation, talking about why evidence matters and why we have to be careful with any claim that can destroy a life.
Finally, we watch God meet Joseph in prison. The circumstances are unfair, but the presence of God is steady, and Joseph chooses to grow where he’s planted. The takeaway is both honest and hopeful: not everyone will appreciate your desire to honor God, but God is with you in every fire, and He can use even unwanted seasons to move you toward His purpose. If this helped you, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a five-star review so more people can find the Bible Breakdown Podcast.

SPEAKER_01Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Genesis chapter 39, and today could have had many titles, but we're going to call it Faithfulness in the Fire. Faithfulness in the Fire. Have you ever felt like that one good deed deserves one good punishment? You know what I mean? It's like it no matter how good you are, no matter what you try to do that is good, there's always bad things that results. Now, we know that's not true. Always is a very unfair word, but it can feel that way sometimes. That you're doing the right thing, but it just seems like all you do is get punished, right? Well, we're going to talk about how Joseph gets punished for this. And we're also going to talk about maybe something that will bring some light on why this would have been so important to the people of Israel. So we're going to get all that in just a moment. So you have your Bibles, want to get it out, want to get everything else ready. While you're doing that, make sure you take just a moment to like, share, and subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you leave us a five-star review on the podcast. It really does help. And our team has an opportunity to look at those. And it is so encouraging to us as we look at those different results and just how you are engaging with God's Word. And you can also go to our Facebook page at the Biblebreakdown.com. And if you didn't get all that, it's okay. You can go to the Bible Breakdown or just Biblebreakdown.com. We've got all of that for you there, okay? All right. Well, if you've been with us over the past while, we have been going through the book of Genesis and we've been challenging each other to really look at this the way the original audience would have looked at this. This would have been written to the recently liberated Jewish people who had spent 400 years. So their grandparents, grandparents, grandparents, all they knew was slavery. And the whole time they had been told about Yahweh, been told about God, but yet they'd also been around this polytheistic culture where they just thought all these different gods made everything. And so Moses comes, God uses him to deliver the nation of Israel. They get to Mount Sinai, they see the power of God on the top of the mountain. The Bible said it looked like thunder and lightning, and God's definitely got their attention. And while he has their attention, he says, this is how it began. This is what's going on. And then he tells them, you know, the journey of the nation of Israel. And now what's interesting is we are getting the hints of the beginning of why they're even in Egypt. Remember, we've been talking about how Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers and he was taken as a slave into Egypt. And as he was there, he begins to just do the best that he can, and God begins to elevate him. And now we get into chapter 39 and we begin to see that not always doing the right things leads to quick good results. They do eventually, but sometimes there is a time between doing the right thing and receiving the right reward. So we're going to look at this and see what maybe God's word could encourage us with today. So if you're ready, Genesis chapter 39, verse 1 says this. Potiphar was captain of the guard for Pharaoh and are the king of Egypt. And the Lord was with Joseph. So he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. Potiphar noticed this and realized that the Lord was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did. This pleased Potiphar, and so he soon made Joseph his personal attendant. He put him in charge of his entire household and everything he owned. From that day Joseph was put in charge of his master's household and property, and the Lord began to bless Potiphar's household for Joseph's sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and his livestock flourished. So Potiphar gave Joseph complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. With Joseph there, he didn't worry about a thing except what kind of food to eat. Joseph was a very handsome man, and he was well built as well. So the Bible makes to sure let us know he was what we would now call a tall drink of water. Okay, he was a handsome and well-built man. Verse 7, and Potiphar's wife soon began to look at him lustfully. Oh no. She said, Come and sleep with me. But Joseph refused and said, Look, fool. No, he didn't say that. He said, Look, my master trust me with everything in his entire household. In other words, I have earned the trust of my master. Like, joke, Joker, trust me, okay? We're we're besties as much as an employer employee can be, right? We got this. Verse 9. No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you. Because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God. Now pause. Notice that the ultimate reason why Joseph did not want to do this was number one, because it was a lack of integrity. But number two, because it was dishonoring to God. And actually the primary thing was it was dishonoring to God. Already an amazing lesson for us. The reason why we try to have integrity with the world around us, do what God's word says, is because number one, it's just the right thing. But more importantly, because we're doing everything we do in the eyes of God. All right, verse 10. She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day. But he refused to sleep with her and he kept out of her way as much as possible. Pause. Can you imagine that conversation? So, hey, Joe, you in the mood today? Get away from me, lady. And then the next day, hey, uh, Joe, is today the day? Ma'am, get away from me. And just constantly, constantly, constantly. But verse 11 says, here's the thing. One day, though, no one else was around when he went in to do his work. She grabbed him by the cloak, demanding, Come on, sleep with me. Crazy. Joseph tore himself away, but he left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house. When she saw that she was holding his cloak, that he had fled, she called out to her servants, and soon all the men came running. Look, she said, My husband has brought this Hebrew slave here to make fools of us. He came into my room to rape me, but I screamed. When he heard me scream, he ran outside and got away. But he left his cloak behind him with me. She kept the cloak with her until her husband came home. Then she told him her story. That Hebrew slave you brought into our house tried to come in and fool around with me, she said. But I screamed and he ran outside, leaving his cloak with me. Pause. This is already another great example of why we have to be so careful whenever anyone is accused of anything. That we always want to make sure we follow the evidence because we always have to be careful. We want to believe what somebody says, but at the same time, we don't know the heart of anybody. You know, the Bible actually says that the heart is deceitfully wicked. That's why, as much as we always want to believe people, we have to follow evidence because every once in a while you'll find a bad actor like this. All right, here we go, verse 19. So Potiphar was furious when he heard his wife's story about how Joseph had treated her. So he took Joseph and threw him into the prison where the king's prisoners were held, and there he remained. But the Lord was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his fateful love. And the Lord made Joseph a favorite within the prison warden, or with the prison warden. Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison. And the warden had no more worries because Joseph took care of everything. And the Lord was with him and caused everything he did to succeed. What an amazing turn of events. So Joseph loses everything and he goes down to Egypt. While he's in Egypt, he just begins as a slave. And you know, we don't really know for sure exactly what the you know bottom of that totem pole would have been, but at some point he worked his way up until Potiphar notices. Man, this guy knows how to run a household. He he's administrative, he knows how to, you know, he knows how to keep things organized. And so before it was over with, the Bible said the only thing Potiphar worried about is what he's gonna have for dinner that night. But also, this got the attention of Potiphar's wife. And she didn't have integrity. She wanted to have an affair on her husband. But Joseph, because he was a man of integrity, said, no, I'm not gonna do that. Well, she got angry because of that. You know, she probably felt disrespected or whatever, and so she lied on Joseph. And there are some people who say that in, you know, in this kind of uh time, that what actually Joseph could have very well had have happened to him is that he could have very well been killed for this. And so there are some historians who actually think that the fact that Potiphar didn't put Joseph to death, but put him in the king's prison was number one, to keep an eye on him because he was already, you know, Potiphar was over, you know, the king's guard, so he would have been in the vicinity of this. But also some historians say he didn't put him to death because he might not have fully believed his wife's story. And so instead of putting to death, he did the next thing that he could do, which is just to put him away. And we don't know that for sure, but some some historians guessed that, but either way, Joseph is now in prison for something he didn't do. But this is what I love. Even while in prison, he decided to grow where he had been planted, did the best that he could, and God began to bless him even though he was in prison. And this could be the great principle for us, and that is this. I want to tell you some really bad news, and then some really good news. Here's the bad news not everyone will appreciate your desire to honor God. There's a thousand reasons. Sometimes they just won't understand. Sometimes there will be bad actors, and sometimes there's a whole lot of people in between. But not everybody will understand when you're trying to do the best you can. Therefore, sometimes you'll receive bad for good effort. And sometimes things are not always fair. That's just the way it is in this fallen world we live in. And so I want to just tell you if you've ever heard someone say that if you do the right thing and you read God's word every day and you pray and you give and you serve and you believe God enough and you pray enough scripture that you'll never have a bad day. Can I tell you, according to the Bible, that's not true. That even if you do all the right things, every once in a while, bad will come your way for a thousand reasons. But here's the great news, here's the good news God is with you. God is with you in every single thing. Spoiler alert, we're gonna find out that that Joseph actually needed to be in prison so that he could get to where God wanted him to go. And even in this moment, he decided I did not choose this, but I choose what I do with it. And he chose to grow where he'd been planted. Here's my encouragement for you. You can't always choose where life takes you, but you can choose the attitude you bring to it and what you do with it. And so maybe you're you're listening or watching to this, maybe you're on your way to work or you're on your break at work, uh you're getting ready to go to bed. I don't know what it is, but here's the thing take a moment and think about maybe some of the situations you're going through. And they're hard, and they're difficult. And just between me and you, maybe you and I would agree it's not fair. But here's the thing don't let those circumstances dictate how you feel about God. Don't let those difficulties tell you what you can and can't bring to the table. Because we can bring to the table I trust God. I'm gonna do the very best I can. You you're gonna put me in this environment. Well, I'm gonna take lemons, I'm gonna make lemonade out of it, because God can do exceedingly and abundantly above everything we could ask or think, according to his power that works within us. And maybe you're gonna be going through a season for a while that's difficult and hard. But you know what's amazing? That it's the difficult and the hard and the pressure that makes diamonds, that makes pearls, that makes beautiful things. Maybe God has you in this storm, not to kill you, but maybe it's to make you into everything that He knows that you can be. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you're with us and you're for us. God, I'm so thankful that two things can be true at the same time. Life is sometimes unfair, and you are always faithful, and that you are with us, and that you are faithful to us in every fire. I celebrate you today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. Well, God's word says in Genesis 1, verse 1, in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. If our God is great enough to do that, everything is possible. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Genesis chapter 40.
