The Bible Breakdown: Daily Bible Reading
Genesis 45: The Big Reveal
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The moment Joseph says, “I am Joseph,” everything changes. Genesis 45 isn’t just a dramatic reunion story. It’s a masterclass in forgiveness, God’s providence, and what it looks like to lead with a healed heart instead of a wounded ego.
We walk through the big reveal scene where Joseph sends everyone out, breaks down in tears, and tells the brothers who betrayed him to come closer. Instead of payback, he offers perspective: what they meant for harm, God used to preserve lives during famine. If you’ve ever struggled with resentment, family conflict, or the question of why God allowed something painful, this chapter gives you language for faith that doesn’t ignore the hurt but refuses to be ruled by it.
Then we follow the practical provision that flows from redemption. Joseph lays out the famine timeline, invites his family to settle in Goshen, and Pharaoh backs the plan with resources, wagons, and the best of the land. Jacob’s stunned disbelief turns into revived hope when he sees the evidence and decides he must go. It’s a reminder that restoration is both spiritual and concrete, and God often rebuilds what was broken through steps you can actually take.
We also connect Joseph’s story to Christian leadership today: the higher you climb, the lower you go in serving. Opportunity brings responsibility, and any “success” God gives us is meant to bless others. SPEAKER_01Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Genesis chapter 45. And today's title is The Big Reveal. The Big Reveal. I don't know if you've ever watched this before, but there was this TV show, and I don't remember the name of it, but the moment was they would go and renovate this house. And so you would look at the house and it would just be one thing. Like it wasn't always bad, it was just different, right? And then they would renovate it and do all this kind of stuff, and they'd put this big bus in front of the house, and they would get ready. All the people there would say, Move that bus. And then when they would move the bus, it would be like the big reveal and it'd be like, ah, you know, kind of thing. That is what this chapter is like. Up until now, it has been full of mystery. And we know, as the ones who are reading the story, but the brothers of Joseph have no idea what's going on. And today they're going to find out, and even something better happens as well. So I can't wait to get into this. So if you got your Bibles and open up with me to Genesis 45. While you're doing that, make sure you take just a second, like, share, and subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you leave us a five-star review on the podcast. It really does help. And make sure you're going to the Bible breakdown discussion on our Facebook page. By the way, also, if you would like to have these podcasts and chapters and all that good stuff, if you would like those sent to your phone every day so you don't have to look it up anywhere, you just have it as a text message. You can text RLC Bible. That's the letters RLC and then Bible as one word to 94,000, and we would love to partner with you in that. All right. Now, if you've been with us for a while, we have been going through the foundational stories of the nation of Israel. And we know from the New Testament that we believers, even if we are Gentiles, have been grafted into this story. And so this is our history as well. We've been going through the different beginnings, and finally we have this story where Joseph has gone to Egypt. Later, his brothers come looking for grain, and they don't know it's Joseph that they're trying to buy it from. And if you haven't been with us, you really should pause this and go back to some earlier chapters because it is just a crazy story of Jacob, or excuse me, Joseph is not telling them who he is. And it's this intrigue and back and forth. He's kind of tricking them a little bit. And then yesterday, finally, Joseph probably finds out in that moment, this is why they haven't come looking for me. They thought I was dead. And then Jacob, or excuse me, Judah, there's only too many names to keep up with. Judah finally does what he should have done back then. He stands up for his younger brother and he says, please, let's protect our younger brother, if nothing else, but for our father's sake. Well, finally, it comes to a head. Joseph can't handle it anymore. And then the big reveal happens. So here we go. Genesis 45, verse 1 says this, and I agree with this first part of this verse. It says this Joseph could stand it no longer. Yes. There were many people in the room, and he said to his attendants, Out, all of you. So he was alone with his brothers when he told them who he was. And he broke down and wept. Wow. He wept so loudly that the Egyptians could hear him. And word of this quickly carried to Pharaoh's palace. I am Joseph, he said to his brothers. Is my father still alive? But his brothers were speechless. They were stunned to realize that Joseph was standing there in front of them. Please come closer, he said to them. So they came closer. And he said again, I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold into slavery in Egypt. But don't be upset. Don't be angry with yourselves for selling me to this place. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives. This famine that has ravaged the land for two years, it will last for five more years, and there will be neither ploughing nor harvesting. God has sent me ahead of you to keep you and your families alive and to preserve many survivors. So it was God who sent me here, not you. He is the one who made me an advisor to Pharaoh, the manager of his entire palace, and the governor of all Egypt. Now hurry back to my father and tell him that your son Joseph, God has made me master of all the land of Egypt. So come down to me immediately. You can live in the region of Goshen, where you can be near me with all of your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and everything you own. I will take care of you there, and for there are still five more years of famine ahead of us. Otherwise you and your household and all your animals will starve. Then Joseph added, Look, you can now see for yourselves, so you can be my so wait a minute, and so can my brother Benjamin, that I really am Joseph. Go tell my father, and my honored that of my honored position here in Egypt, describe to him everything you have seen, and then bring my father here quickly. Weeping with joy, he embraced Benjamin, and Benjamin did the same. Then Joseph kissed each of his brothers and wept over them, and after that they began talking freely with him. Wow, what an amazing moment. Verse 16. The news soon reached Pharaoh's palace. Joseph's brothers have arrived. Pharaoh and his officials were all delighted to hear this. Pharaoh said to Joseph, Tell your brothers, this is what you must do. Load your pack animals and hurry back to the land of Canaan. Then get your father and all your families and return here to me. I will give you the very best land in Egypt, and you will eat from the very best that the land produces. Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, Tell your brothers, take wagons from the land of Egypt to carry your little ones and your wives, and bring your father here. Don't worry about your personal belongings, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours. So the son of Jacob did, sons of Jacob did as they were told. Joseph provided them with wagons, as Pharaoh had commanded, and he gave them supplies for their journey, and e and he gave each of them new clothes. The Benjamin he gave five changes of clothes, and three hundred pieces of silver. He also sent his father ten male donkeys loaded with the finest products of Egypt, ten female donkeys loaded with grain, and bread and the other supplies that they would need for his journey. Joseph sent his brothers off, and as they left, he called after them. Don't quarrel about all this along the way. And then they left. Joseph is alive, they told him. He is the governor of all the land of Egypt. Jacob was stunned at the news. He couldn't believe it. But when they repeated to Jacob everything Joseph had told them, he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him, his father's spirits revived. And then Jacob exclaimed, It must be true. My son Joseph is alive. I must go and see him before I die. I mean, wow. What a moment. I mean, what a moment. He finally can't stop. He can't hold back anymore. And he tells them, Can you imagine that moment? I mean, they see this all-powerful guy who probably looks a little bit like Pharaoh himself. He's got all the garb on and he's got all these servants and attendants. And they're in this moment where now they think their lives are at risk because it looks as though they have, you know, have made him angry and all this stuff. And then he breaks down and cries. Well, now we're really in trouble. You just made the second in command of Egypt cry. Benjamin, you're gonna get us killed. Thanks, buddy. No, he's like, no, I am. And you you imagine any number of things he could have said that would have been surprising. And then they say, he says, I am Joseph. Like that, that is not, that was not on my bingo card for you to say this year, Joseph. And then you know what I love? He says, He says, It is not your fault. What you did was wrong, but God used it to do something amazing. God used your stupidity. God used you fools, you know, God used it to prepare for all of you. In other words, you know what he said? God's got a plan. God's got a plan. None of you guys were trying to do God's plan, but God knew what he was doing, and God did what only he could do. And you know what's amazing? Is one of the reasons why they would have been so against Joseph becoming their leader back when he was a kid was because the way the family structure worked back then is it wasn't just that every immediate family took care of each other, but there would be a patriarch, a leader over the clan, basically, this big family. And this leader was in charge of making sure everybody was taken care of. And it would normally be the oldest or just the one they had seen that was the leader almost like 99% of the time, it was the oldest. And so it was his responsibility to take care of the whole family. And what Joseph was saying is, I'm going to be that guy. And they were like, No, because you're not going to take care of us. And so one of the reasons why they would have tried to get rid of him was because they wouldn't want him to be put in charge because they they couldn't trust that he was going to take care of them. And now, you know what he says? He says, I'm going to step into that role because now I finally get what it's about. I get why God, what God was asking me to do. I come across this all the time for leaders. I will I'll talk to young leaders who, you know, they think they say, well, God's called me to be a leader. God's called me to be a pastor, God's called me to do what this. And they think that that means that they get to preach and they get to be in charge of an organization, they get to do whatever. And with time and a whole lot of trouble and a whole lot of difficulty, they begin to realize that the higher up the ladder you move in leadership, the lower you fall in serving. And that it's not about having a title, it's about serving. And I can't tell you how many times that I have looked at a guy when he is young and he's just so full of taking charge and taking over. And then I go see him five or six years later and I can see him. And if he's made it, he'll go, man, what an honor it is to serve. I didn't realize. I thought when I took on a title, I got to have all the fun. No, when I take on the title, I get to take on all the responsibility. And that's what Joseph had learned is that with opportunity comes responsibility. And he's rising to the challenge. I want to encourage you today, and also challenge you today, that God's got a plan for your life. That you have everything you need to do everything God's called you to do. At the same time, the plan that God has for you is not so that you can achieve success and you can be in charge, but it's so that you can achieve, quote, success so that you can serve and so you can give. So be very careful to realize that God wants you to be successful. God may want you to prosper, but it's not so that you can have, but it's so you can have more to give and to serve. And can I tell you, when you realize that all good things come from the Lord anyway, then just like Joseph, you get to say, okay, well, if I lose a job, if I lose this, if I have a difficulty there, I trust that God will use it to position me where I need to be so that I can make a difference for him. Because it's all about him and all for his glory. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you're with us and that you're for us. Lord, I'm thankful for how you steer our path. Lord, as Joseph said, you might have done it, but God used it. Lord, I pray you'll give us eyes to see like that. That we will see every difficulty in our life as an opportunity for you to show us another miracle. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. Well, God's word says in Genesis 1, verse 1, in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. If that's possible, anything's possible. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Genesis chapter 46.
