The most dangerous lie about faith is that the best part is the big moment and then the story fades to black. Genesis 47 refuses to do that. After Jacob and Joseph finally reunite, the camera stays rolling, and we get the “next day” details that most of us actually live: paperwork, provision, leadership decisions, family relocation, and the slow march of time.

We walk through how Joseph brings his brothers to Pharaoh, why their identity as shepherds matters, and how Goshen becomes a strategic place of protection and growth for Israel. Then the chapter turns intense as the famine tightens its grip. Joseph’s grain program shifts from money to livestock to land, and the result is a massive consolidation of power under Pharaoh along with a lasting 20 percent harvest policy. It’s a rich Bible breakdown for anyone who wants to think clearly about Genesis 47, Joseph’s leadership, crisis management, stewardship, and the moral complexity that shows up when survival is on the line.

Finally, we bring it home: new believers often expect the Christian life to feel like one long spiritual climax, but discipleship is a daily walk with Christ that matures over years. If you’ve been asking “now what?” or you’ve gotten tired of the day by day, this conversation is meant to steady you and remind you that God is faithful in ordinary time too.

Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Genesis chapter 47. And today's title is Time Marches On. Time Marches On. I don't know if you've ever done this before, but you know, I love movies. I love movies with big, you know, big plots and big stakes and, you know, like the Avengers stuff. I just think that's awesome. And one of the things that I love are movies that have the big moment, you know, like the climax. You know, Thanos is finally destroyed and everything is okay. Spoiler alert, sorry. And then, you know, just kind of the hero rides off into the sunset. And then my favorite part is when you have the next day. Because there are so many movies we watch. It's just like, you know, they go off into the sunset and it's like that's the end. But I don't know about you, but I've had some, you know, fun, big moments in my life, but the sun comes up the next day. Like, what are we going to do next? And that's one of the things I like about this story is there was a great climactic moment yesterday when Joseph and Jacob meet again and they hug and they cry. You know, the curtain comes down at this beautiful moment. Today is about the next day. And I love that. So we're gonna get into that in just a moment. So you have your Bibles, want to get ready with me while you're doing that. Make sure you also take a moment to like, share, and subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you leave us a five-star review on the podcast. It really does help. And make sure you go into the Bible breakdown discussion on Facebook. You can find that at the Bible Breakdown as a Facebook page or find everything at the Bible Breakdown.com. Well, once again, you know, if you were with me uh or listening to me just a minute ago, we're at the end of this amazing story. So just once again, if you were with us yesterday, finally, after all these years, Jacob and Joseph meet. They they're able to have that moment and reconcile. And you just imagine, you know, for Joseph, how wonderful that must have been. I mean, there was no guarantee he was ever gonna see his father again. For Jacob, he thought his son was dead. So it's awesome. But here's the thing after the curtain fell, the next day happens. And I love that because the Bible tells the rest of the story. And so today we're gonna get what happened after that wonderful moment. What was next? So let's read this together. Genesis forty seven, verse one says this. Then Joseph went to see Pharaoh and told him, My father and brothers have arrived from the land of Canaan. They have come with all their flocks and herds and possessions, and they are now in the region of Goshen. Joseph took five of his brothers with him and presented them to Pharaoh. Pharaoh asked his brothers, What is your occupation? They replied, We your servants are shepherds, just like our ancestors. We have come to live here in Egypt for a while, for there is no pasture for our flocks in Canaan. The famine is very severe there, so please we request permission to live in the region of Goshen. And Pharaoh said to Joseph, Now that your father and brothers have joined you here, choose any place in the land of Egypt for them to live. Give them the best of the land of Egypt. Let them live in the region of Goshen, and if any of them have special skills, put them in charge of my flocks too. Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob, and presented him to Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. How old are you? Pharaoh asked him. Jacob replied, I have travelled this earth for a hundred and thirty hard years, but my life has been short compared to the lives of my ancestors. Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh again before leaving his court. So Joseph assigned the best land of Egypt and the region of Ramses to his father and his brothers, and he settled them there just as Pharaoh had commanded. Then Joseph provided food for his father and for his brothers in amounts appropriate to the number of their dependents, including their small children. Meanwhile the famine became so severe that all the food was used up, and the people were starving throughout the lands of Egypt and Canaan. By selling grain to the people, Joseph eventually collected all the money in Egypt and Canaan, and he put the money in Pharaoh's treasury. When the people of Egypt and Canaan ran out of money, all the Egyptians came to Joseph. Our money is gone, they cried, Please give us food, or we will die before your eyes. Joseph replied, Since your money is gone, bring me your livestock, and I will give you food in exchange for your livestock. So they brought their livestock to Joseph in exchange for food. In exchange for their horses, flocks of sheep and goats, herds of cattle and donkeys, Joseph provided them with food for another year. But at the end of the year, the next year and the next year, they came again and said, We cannot hide the truth from you, my Lord. Our money is gone, our livestock and our cattle are yours. We have nothing left to give you but our bodies and our land. Why should we die before your eyes? Buy us and our land in exchange for our food. We offer our land and ourselves as slaves to Pharaoh. Just give us grain so that we may live and not die. And so the land does not become empty and desolate. So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, and all the Egyptians sold him their fields because the famine was so severe, and soon all the land belonged to Pharaoh. As for the people, he made them all slaves, from one end of Egypt to the other. The only land he did not buy was a land belonging to the priests. They received an allotment of food directly from Pharaoh, so they didn't need to sell their land. Then Joseph said to the people, Look, today I have bought you and your land for Pharaoh. I will provide you with seed so that you can plant the fields. Then, when you harvest it, one fifth of your crops will belong to Pharaoh. You may keep the remaining four fifths of seed for your fields and for your food, for your household and for your little ones. You have saved our lives, they exclaimed. May it please you, my lord, to let us be Pharaoh's servant. Then Joseph issued a decree still in effect in the land of Egypt, that Pharaoh should receive one fifth of all the crops grown in the land. Only the land belonging to the priest was not given to Pharaoh. Meanwhile, the people of Israel settled in the land of Goshen in Egypt. There they acquired property, and they were faithful, and their population grew rapidly. Jacob lived for seventeen years after his arrival in Egypt. He was a hundred and forty seven years old and all. As the time of his death drew near, Jacob called for his son Joseph and said to him, Please do me this favor, put your hand under my thigh and swear that you would treat me with unfailing love by honoring this last request. Do not bury me in Egypt. When I die, please take my body out of Egypt and bury me with my ancestors. So Joseph promised, I will do as you ask. Swear that you will do it, Jacob insisted. So Joseph gave his oath, and Jacob bowed humbly at the head of his bed. Wow. What I love about that is it tells the next step of the story. And so after this wonderful reunion that we read about yesterday, then the whole family moves down there to where that Jake Joseph is and where Pharaoh gives them that land in Goshen. Eventually they become slaves there, but not for the moment. For then they're protected and they get food and everything's okay. And then everything continues to move. And I want to make sure that we talk about that for a moment because one of the things that bothers me as a pastor is when someone gives their life to Christ and someone gets saved, in the beginning, there is this wonderful moment. I love being around new Christians. And then as time begins to go on, many times those new Christians will be like, well, well, now what? Like, what do you mean, now what? Now we live with Christ. We get closer to Him. We get to know Him more. We share our faith with others. Like, oh, I just thought it'd be a fun adventure. Well, it is. What's not fun about loving Jesus? You know, but what they're expecting is they're expecting that moment instead of realizing that Christianity is not just in a moment, it's in a life with Christ. That goes into eternity with Christ. And that's what I love about this is that God protected them and brought them to Egypt, and then he continued to move in their life as content as life continued to move on. So I want to encourage you. Don't get discouraged because the sun comes up the next day. Because you got to go back to work the next day. Because the great thing is you get saved, and then you get to do life and take God into every area of your life and make him part of your long-term story. So I want to encourage you with this. If you know anybody who's recently given their life to Christ, we need to encourage them. But the greatest adventure is not the one you take on a weekend, it's the one we get to live day by day. And what about you? Have you gotten weary in the day by day? Well, maybe we need to remind ourselves that God is in those moments. And it's in those moments that He does his greatest work and he shows himself faithful all throughout our life. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much that you are with us in every moment. You're with us in the big moments. And Lord, you show your faithfulness in the day-by-day faithfulness. I pray, God, that you will open our eyes to see you more clearly every day, and that we'll bring you glory in everything that we do. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Well, God's word says Genesis 1 1, that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And if God can do that, anything's possible. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Genesis chapter 48.
