Exodus 08: More gods Fall

Frogs in the ovens. Gnats in the dust. Flies in the palace. Exodus 8 doesn’t read like a polite religious story, it reads like a full-on confrontation where God proves who actually rules Egypt. We walk through the chapter step by step and show how each plague functions as a direct challenge to Egyptian polytheism, exposing the weakness of false gods and the limits of Pharaoh’s power. If you’ve ever wondered why the plagues feel so targeted, this breakdown brings the purpose into focus: God is not just punishing, He is revealing truth and dismantling idols.
We talk through the frog plague and the detail that says everything about counterfeit power: Pharaoh’s magicians can make more frogs, but they can’t make them leave. Then we move to gnats, where the magicians finally hit a wall and admit, “This is the finger of God.” Finally, we cover the swarms of flies and the moment that shifts the story from public judgment to personal comfort, when God protects Goshen and makes a clear distinction between His people and Egypt. That separation is a powerful Bible study key for anyone searching for God’s presence in chaos.
The conversation turns practical and pastoral as we connect Exodus 8 to real life suffering, prayer, and trust. Sometimes God delivers us out of a season, and sometimes He carries us through it, but either way He stays with us. If you need hope that God is still near on hard days, this one is for you. Plagues As A Showdown With Gods
SPEAKER_01Well, if you've been with us, we've been talking about how God is setting his people free. For 400 years, the nation of Israel has been in this polytheistic Egyptian culture, but it's time to get free. Yesterday we talked about how there are these different gods that are in the nation of Egypt. There's all different kinds. There's a lot of little gods, a lot of big gods. But what we are also going to see is that the plagues that God shows over our visits upon the nation of Egypt, they are actually deposing or showing authority over some of the main gods of Egypt. And as we go down the list, the more powerful they get. And so it's going to be amazing how God continues to do this and he's going to do more of it today. And every time he does, we're going to mark another one of their false gods off of our list. So if you're ready, Exodus chapter 8, verse 1 says this.
Frogs Overwhelm Egypt And Pharaoh Bargains
SPEAKER_01They will even jump into your ovens and your kneading bowls. That's gross. Frogs will jump on you, your people, and your officials. Then the Lord said to Moses, Tell Aaron to raise his staff in your hand, raise the staff in your hand over all the rivers, canals, and ponds of Egypt, and bring up the frogs from all over the land. So Aaron raised his hand over the waters of Egypt, and frogs came up and covered the whole land. But the magicians were able to do the same thing with their magic. They too caused frogs to come up from the land of Egypt. And so Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and begged, please plead with the Lord to take the frogs away from all my people. Which by the way, the Egyptians were able to cause more frogs, but they couldn't take them away. Let's just food for thought. Verse 8, plea with the Lord to take the frogs away from me and my people, and I will let your people go, so they can offer sacrifices to the Lord. You set the time, Moses said. Tell me when you want the me to pray for you and your officials and your people, then you and your houses will be rid of all the frogs, and they may remain only in the Nile River. Do it tomorrow, Pharaoh said. All right. Moses replied, And it was as you have said, Then you will know that there is no one like the Lord our God. The frogs will leave you and your houses, your officials and your people. They will remain only in the Nile River. So Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh's palace, and Moses cried out to the Lord about the frogs that he had inflicted on Pharaoh. And the Lord did just as Moses had predicted. The frogs in the houses and the courtyards and the fields all died. The Egyptians piled the Egyptians piled them into great heaps, and the terrible stench filled the land. But when Pharaoh saw the relief that come, he became stubborn, and he refused to listen to Moses and Aaron just as the Lord predicted.
Heket The Fertility God Falls
SPEAKER_01Okay, so we got frogs. Now in the Egyptian culture, the god that symbolized frogs, or rather, the frog symbolized this god, was Hecket, Heket, and it is the God of fertility. And what this God would do is this God would protect women and children in childbirth. And so that's why for us, we're like, man, these are some random frogs everywhere. But those frogs, like if they would see a frog that would be leaping across, you know, the place where someone was pregnant, that would be a sign that that God had protected or was going to protect or going to bless that baby in that womb. And so they saw frogs as representing the God Cheket. So when Yahweh was telling the frogs to come and telling the frogs to go, he was showing that Cheket actually wasn't real, that he had control over all the frogs. And so there's another God gone. All right, next, verse 16.
Gnats And The Magicians Hit A Wall
SPEAKER_01So Moses, so the Lord said to Moses, Tell Aaron, raise your staff and strike the ground. The dust will turn into swarms of gnats throughout the land of Egypt. So Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded. And when Aaron raised his hand and struck the ground with the staff, gnats infested the entire land, covering the Egyptians and their animals. And all the dust of the land of Egypt turned into gnats. Now pause. I don't know if you know what this is. This is in the desert. So that's a whole lot of gnats. I'm gonna tell you something. They ain't nothing worse than walking around outside and getting a gnat in your mouth or in your eyes, and that's what's happening to them. So as much as the sand and the dirt, there's gnats everywhere. Verse 18. Moses, or excuse me, Pharaoh's magicians tried to do the same thing with their secret arts, but this time they failed. And the gnats covered everyone, people and animals alike. This is the finger of God, the magicians exclaimed to Pharaoh. But Pharaoh's heart remained hard, and he would not listen to them, just as the Lord had predicted. So you got the the Nile is now gone, then you got a stronger God, a Heket over the frogs, and now you've got gnats,
Flies And Goshen Is Protected
SPEAKER_01which was the god Hheeb. Hib. You know, it's a G, but it's a Hib, and he was in charge of the dust and the earth, and he was considered to be the source of crops. And so another God is now gone, a more powerful God is now gone. But yet Pharaoh didn't care. So yet here's another one. Then the Lord said to Moses, Get up early in the morning and stand in Pharaoh's way as he goes down to the river. Say to him, This is what the Lord says, let my people go so they can worship me. If you refuse, I will send swarms of flies on you, your officials, your people, and all your houses. The Egyptians' homes will be filled with flies, and the ground will be covered with them. But this time I will spare the region of Goshen where my people live. No flies will be found there. Then you will know that I am the Lord, and that I am present even in the heart of your land. I will make a clear distinction between my people and your people. This miraculous sign will happen tomorrow. And the Lord did just as he said. A thick swarm of flies filled Pharaoh's palace and the houses of his officials. The whole land of Egypt was thrown into chaos by the flies. Pharaoh called to Moses and Aaron, All right, go ahead and offer sacrifices to your God, as he said, but do it here in this land. But Moses replied, That wouldn't be right. The Egyptians detest the sacrifices that we offer to the Lord our God. Look, if we offer sacrifices here where the Egyptians can see us, they will stone us. We must take a three-day trip into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God just as he has commanded us. All right, go ahead, Pharaoh replied. I will let you go into the wilderness to offer your sacrifices to the Lord your God. But don't go too far away. Now hurry and pray for me. Moses answered, As soon as I leave you, I will pray to the Lord, and tomorrow the swarms of flies will disappear from you and your officials and all your people. But I'm warning you, Pharaoh, don't lie to us again and refuse to let the people go to sacrifice to the Lord. So Moses left Pharaoh's palace and pleaded with the Lord to remove the flies. And the Lord did as Moses asked, and caused the swarms of flies to disappear from Pharaoh, his officials, and his people. Not a single fly remained. But Pharaoh again became stubborn and refused to let the people go. And so we have one more for today. We have flies, and that is Haperi, Haperi, which was considered to be over creation. And so Haperi, which was represented by a fly, was thought to be over the created order of things, the way things were born, die, and go again. It was thought that this particular God watched over that. And so God took care of that one and said, no more. But here's the thing I
God Keeps His People Through Hard Days
SPEAKER_01want you to see. First of all, four gods down, and they're getting stronger according to the polytheistic culture of the Egyptians. They had hierarchies of gods, which of course Pharaoh is what's considered to be the most powerful God. But what he is seeing is these lower level gods that they believed in are being picked off one at a time. God is showing himself to be strong and stronger and stronger over again. But what I love about this one is he said, What will affect you will not affect my people. The judgment that is coming upon you, I will not visit upon them. And that will show not only am I powerful, but I'm also mighty to save my people. And can I tell you one of the things that brings me so much joy in life is that even when we go through difficult times, we never go through them alone. That God is with us through everything. The other day I was in a situation where I was with a group of people, we were praying over someone, and one of the people who was kind of leading the prayer is they were praying over someone who was sick. And they said, God, I just pray you will have your way. There is no better place to be than in the hands of God, and we just we ask for healing at the same time, even more important, we ask for healing or for your will to be done. And you know, amen. All that. Well, as soon as they were finished, this other person spoke up and they said, Hey, listen, I don't mean to be disrespectful or anything like that, but I believe in a God of healing. And so I think we should pray again, but this time pray for healing. And the person who had started the prayer, they said, No, no, don't please don't misunderstand me. I believe that God can heal. It's just I've walked with God so long that I trust him no matter what he wants to do. And so I just trust him to heal however he wants to heal, and whatever he wants to do is the best because I know that whatever he wants to do is the best thing, that he walks with us. And it was this amazing moment because all of us were reminded that the very best thing for us is whatever it is God wants to do. God we may think that God's best thing is to take step A, step B, step C, whatever, but God may have a whole different plan. But that's how much we can trust the Lord is that He will keep us or He will keep us, He will keep us from things, or He will keep us through things. But either way, He will keep us. The nation of Israel, they're in Goshen, but they're still having to watch all this stuff all around them, but God is showing them in this moment I may not take you out of this land yet, but I'm gonna keep you safe through all of these different things. And can I encourage you with that today? If God chooses to deliver you out of a season, glory to God, showing his goodness, showing his power, what an amazing thing. At the same time, if God chooses to deliver you through things, God is still faithful even then. Because either way, God is for you and God is with you. But I can't promise you that God will never stop the bad things from coming. That that they that there will not always be or or can I say it like this? Let me say this better. I can't promise you that bad days will never come because the bad days will come and Jesus told us that. What I can promise you, if you have Jesus in your life, is that he goes with us through every difficulty. He goes with us through every dark moment. And here's the amazing thing is there are some things about God we don't learn until we get into those dark places. It's almost like you don't know how how important a parachute is until you're in the middle of the air. Like you don't really care that much about a parachute when you're on the ground, like a great, I'm glad you want a parachute. But it's amazing how important that thing is when you're flying through the air. And many times that's how I've learned about the power of God. It's not when I was firmly on the ground, everything's good, but when somehow or another, for some reason or another, I found myself in mid-air. All of a sudden I go, God, I hope you're real, here we go. And turns out he was more real than I can imagine. I think that many times God will lead us through these things because he believes in us more than we believe in ourselves, he believes that we won't give up. He knows that we will turn to him at the right moment and that he will show himself strong, and not only will it increase our faith, but increase the faith of others. You know, these these Israelites in Goshen, when they're looking around there seeing all this, if they had any doubt God was real, they know he is now. Is it possible that God didn't bring you this far just to bring you this far? But he brought you this far to carry you the rest of the way for an amazing testimony of what
Prayer And Closing Promise Of Freedom
SPEAKER_01he can do. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you're with us and you're for us. Thank you, God, that while we have enemies in our lives, none of them can stand in the presence of God. We love you and we we are thankful for you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. Well, God's word says in Exodus 6, verse 6, I will free you from the oppression and rescue you from slavery. God is the source of all freedom. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Exodus chapter 9.
