Pharaoh has seen enough to change, yet he still won’t let go and the cost keeps rising. We open Exodus 9 and watch a showdown unfold that’s bigger than politics, bigger than weather, and bigger than one stubborn leader. The plagues land like precision strikes, not random chaos, and each one exposes how fragile Egypt’s “gods” really are when the living God steps in.

We break down the death of livestock and why that hits Egypt’s economy at the core, then move to the plague of boils where even the magicians crumble. From there the chapter escalates into thunder, lightning, and a hailstorm so destructive it leaves the land in ruins yet spares Goshen. Along the way we talk about the spiritual meaning behind these signs, the repeated warnings God gives, and Pharaoh’s pattern of temporary remorse followed by hardened resistance the moment relief arrives.

The takeaway turns personal: God doesn’t only rescue, He keeps freeing. If you’re facing an addiction, a coping habit, or a long held idol that feels too big to challenge, Exodus 9 asks a hard question: will you trust God to be stronger than the thing that’s been ruling you? Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Exodus chapter 9. And today's title is God Keeps Winning. God Keeps Winning. I gotta tell you, I get at some point right in here, I get to feeling bad. Not necessarily for Pharaoh, but for all the Egyptians. I mean, Pharaoh, I mean, he's living in a palace. He he is just thinking that he is above all this somehow. But these poor Egyptians, man, they have had gnats, they have had not been able to drink anything. They have had, can you imagine the smell of hundreds and hundreds of dead frogs? I mean, come on. And it just keeps going because Pharaoh will not simply let God's people go, right? And so we're gonna keep talking about this. So get ready because it's gonna get even crazier as more and more gods are conquered, so-called gods are conquered by God, and we're gonna enjoy it the whole way. So

Plagues As A Clash Of Gods

SPEAKER_01

Well, if you remember, we've been in the book of Exodus, and what we were saying is, is one of the most interesting things about the plagues is they didn't come out of nowhere. It wasn't like God didn't have a plan, he didn't have it figured out, and he was just like, well, I mean, let's I mean, let's send some, you know, some frogs, you know, whatever. But actually, these animals represented the different gods in Egyptian polytheism. But they get stronger as we go. And so God is saying, I'm greater than this one, I'm greater than that one, I'm greater than that one. And he's gonna keep on going in chapter nine. And we've been doing this where we have been marking off the gods as God has conquered them, and we're gonna keep on going. We got a few more today. So if you're ready, Exodus chapter nine, verse one says this go back to Pharaoh, the Lord

Livestock Die Yet Israel Spared

SPEAKER_01

commanded Moses. Tell him, This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrew, says Let my people go so they can worship me. If you continue to hold them and refuse to let them go, the hand of the Lord will strike your livestock, your horses, donkeys, camel, cattle, sheep, and goats with a deadly plague. But the Lord will again make a distinction between the livestock of the Israelites and that of the Egyptians. Not a single one of Israel's animals will die. The Lord has already set the time frame for the plague to begin. He has declared that it will strike the land tomorrow. And the Lord did just as he had said. The next morning all the livestock of the Egyptians died, but the Israelites did not lose a single animal. Pharaoh sent his officials to investigate, and they discovered that the Israelites had not lost a single animal. But even so, Pharaoh's heart remained stubborn and he refused to let God's people go. So here's another one: the death of the livestock. Livestock were thought to be watched over by Hothor, and what that would mean is because the nation's livestock would be the same thing as their economic power. You know, by then, they back then they didn't necessarily trade as much in like, you know, gold and silver as much as they would trade in livestock and just the ability to do the work the livestock would produce. And so God is saying, nope, Hothor is not in charge of the animals. I am, and I can do with them as I please. And so there's another God that's been marked

Boils Break Out And Magicians Fall

SPEAKER_01

off. Well, the next one is boils. Then the Lord said, verse 8, the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, take handfuls of soot from a brick kiln and have Moses toss it into the air while Pharaoh watches. The ashes will spread like fine dust over the whole land of Egypt, causing festering boils that's so gross, to break out on the people and animals throughout the land. So they took soot from a brick kiln and went and stood before Pharaoh. As Pharaoh watched, Moses threw the soot into the air, and boils broke out on the people and animals alike. Even the magicians were unable to stand before Moses, because the boils had broken out on them all, all the Egyptians. But the Lord hardened Pharaoh's heart, just as the Lord had predicted to Moses, Pharaoh refused to listen. So this one was the boils was over Emotep. Emotep was the Egyptian god of health, who's a healer. And so those who would serve as priests of Emotep, they could you could go to the shrines and the temples of Emotep and you could ask for healing and they give you an herb or whatever, and either it would work or a wooden. But in this situation, God is saying, Nope, Emotep is not over health. It's me. I am greater than that.

Hailstorm Warning And Pharaoh Bargains

SPEAKER_01

So here we go. Another God gone. Verse 13. Then the Lord said to Moses, Get up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh. Tell him, This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrew, says let my people go so they can worship me. If you don't, I will send more plagues on you and your officials and your people. Poor people. Then you will know that there is no one like me in all the earth. By now I could have lifted my hand and struck you and your people with a plague to wipe you off the face of the earth. But I have spared you for a purpose to show my power and to spread my fame throughout the earth. But if you still lord it over my people and refuse to let them go, tomorrow at this time I will send a hail storm, and it will be more devastating than any in all of Egypt, a history of Egypt. So quick, order your livestock and your servants to come in from the fields to find shelter. Any person or animal left outside will die when the hail falls. Some of Pharaoh's officials were afraid because of what the Lord had said, and they quickly brought their servants and livestocks in from the field. But those who paid no attention to what the Lord said left theirs out in the open. Then the Lord said to Moses, Lift your hand toward the sky, so hail may fall on the people and the livestock and the plants throughout all the land of Egypt. So Moses lifted his staff toward the sky, and the Lord sent thunder and hail, and lightning flashed toward the earth, and the Lord sent a tremendous hail storm against all the land of Egypt. Never in all the history of Egypt had there been a storm like that, with such devastating hail and continuous lightning. It left all of Egypt in ruins. The hell struck down everything in the open field, people, animals, and plants alike. Even the trees were destroyed. The only place without hell was the region of Goshen, where the people of Israel lived. Then Moses quickly summoned, or excuse me, then Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron. This time I have sinned, he confessed. The Lord is righteous, is the righteous one, and my people and I are wrong. Please beg the Lord to end this terrifying thunder in hail. We have had enough. I will let you go. You don't need to stay here any longer. All right, Moses replied. As soon as I leave the city, I will lift my hands and pray to the Lord. Then the thunder and hail will stop, and you will know that the earth belongs to the Lord. But I know that you and your officials still do not fear God. All the flax and barley were ruined by the hail, because the barley had formed heads and the flax was budding, but the wheat and the emmer wheat was spread, were spread were spared because they had not yet spouted from the ground. So Moses left Pharaoh's court and went out to the city. When he lifted his hands to the Lord, the thunder and hail stopped, and the downpour ceased. But when Pharaoh saw that the rain, the hail, and the thunder had stopped, he and his officials sinned again, and Pharaoh again became stubborn. Because his heart was hard, Pharaoh refused to listen to the and excuse me, refused to let the people leave, just as the Lord predicted through Moses.

God Greater Than Every Idol

SPEAKER_01

So here we go. There's one more, hail, which is represented by a God named Nut, who is over the weather, and he was considered to be the one who controlled the sky and all the storms. So you notice this is a really powerful God. We're getting to the most powerful gods, and one of them was the one over weather. They would pray and sacrifice to Nut in order to give them rain or to give them sunshine, or to give them whatever weather that they wanted. And God comes in and goes, No, that God doesn't exist. I alone am God. And so they're getting further and further with only three gods left. And what's happening is that God is showing that He is more powerful. What this reminds me of is what happens when someone gets saved. One of the things that I love about God is it would be enough if God would save us and then move on, right? Like he just we're we're done now. We're saved. You deal with the issues you've got, keep going. But what's amazing is God saves us and then he turns around and he starts setting us free from all the addictions, all the idols, all the things that we have in our life that we have learned to kind of help us medicate the difficult difficulties and darknesses in our life. God slowly starts to set us free. If we will trust in him, he will show us that he is more powerful than every one of these things. And that's what I love about what God does. God starts to pick off all of these idols in our lives. If we'll put our focus and our trust in him. And I say that today to say maybe you're listening or watching this podcast today, and there are some things in your life that you have seen God do in your life. But it seems like there are a few things still in your life that are really big, really nasty, and they just seem like that you just got to find your way to make peace with it because it just it just seems too hard. Can I tell you? Up until the day the thunder and the hail started, I wonder how many Egyptians thought, well, you know, this this Moses and Aaron, I mean they're pretty cool and all. I mean, they were more powerful than all these other gods, but I'm gonna tell you something. That that god Nut, which is such a funny name for a god, that that god Nut, he's he's pretty strong. I mean, he they they did good with the Nile, they did good with the gnats, and man, do you see what they did with the frogs? The boils were nasty. They can't touch Nut. He's got this until God showed he was more powerful. Can I tell you, there's no addiction, there's no difficulty, there's no idol in your life that God is not greater. He has many enemies, but he has no rivals. The question is, is will you trust him that will you turn your life over to him? If you will, God will show that he is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all you can ask, think, or imagine. If you trust the Lord, I promise you that he will show himself stronger than you can

Prayer And Closing Promise Of Freedom

SPEAKER_01

imagine. Can we pray together right now? God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you are indeed more powerful than anything we go through in this life. There are some things in our life that seem to be stronger than you, but we know that they're not. But we trust you. We ask you, God, to have your way in all things. And we celebrate you in this place today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And what God's Word says in Exodus 6, verse 6, it says, I will free you from the oppression and I will rescue you from slavery. God is the author of all freedom. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Exodus chapter 10.
