The Bible Breakdown: Daily Bible Reading
Exodus 13: Holy Detours
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The fastest route is not always the safest route, and Exodus 13 proves it in a way that feels uncomfortably personal. We talk about why detours make us angry, how easy it is to assume we know better, and what happens when God’s guidance clashes with our timeline. I even share a story about ignoring my GPS and paying the price, then connect that instinct to the way we sometimes respond to God.
From there, we dig into Exodus 13 and the practices God gives Israel right after freedom: dedicating the firstborn and keeping the Feast of Unleavened Bread. We unpack why these commands matter, how they train gratitude, and why the whole point is remembrance. When kids ask, “What does this mean?” God builds a faith that can answer with a story, not just a slogan. If you care about Bible study, Christian discipleship, and building spiritual habits that last, this chapter is packed with practical wisdom.
Then we get to the heart of “Holy Detours”: God refuses to lead Israel through Philistine territory even though it’s the shortest path, because he knows they aren’t ready for battle. Instead, he guides them through the wilderness toward the Red Sea, and he does it with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. If your life feels rerouted, delayed, or turned upside down, this conversation offers a steady truth: God can lead you the long way and still be good. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs hope, and leave a five-star review if the podcast helps you trust God more.

Welcome And Today’s Theme
SPEAKER_00Hey everyone and welcome to the Bible Breakdown Podcast. In this podcast, we will be breaking down the Bible one chapter a day. Whether you are a new believer or have been following Christ for a while, we believe that you will learn something new and fresh every single day. So thank you for joining us and let's get into breaking down the Bible together.
SPEAKER_01Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Exodus chapter 13. Today's title is Holy Detours. Holy Detours. Now, I want to tell you something. I'm just going to confess this to you since it's just me and you talking right now. I hate being in a detour. I hate when I am, you know, paying attention to drive my driving and I've got my GPS on, and all of a sudden it tells me to get off on an exit I didn't plan on getting off on. I will argue with that thing over and over again because I am old enough to remember when you couldn't trust the GPS. You it would tell you it is taking you exactly where you're supposed to be, and you would end up in like some cow pasture somewhere when you're trying to be like in downtown city somewhere. But nowadays it's pretty good. And nowadays, most of the time, if it tells you to take a detour, it's for a good reason. But I will still argue because I think I know better. I'm gonna tell you a story about that in a moment. And I want to share with you something that when I really think about it, it just blows my mind at the goodness of God. So we'll get it all then in
Why Detours Make Us Mad
SPEAKER_01just a second. So get your coffees, get your Bible, get your Bible journal out. While you're doing all that, make sure you also take just a moment, like, share, subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you leave us a five-star review on the podcast. It really does help. And make sure you're going to the Bible breakdown discussion on our Facebook page. We have an amazing group of people writing devotions there every single day. And the more we dig, the more we find. You can get all that information at the Biblebreakdown.com and help us as we are continuing to try to grow this community of faith where we are just reading through God's Word one chapter at a time. Okay. Well, if you've been with us, we've been walking through this amazing journey. Oh my goodness, like just walking with the nation of Israel. And if you've ever read any of the Bible before, then these are the stories that we use so many times. You know, the plagues, Israel, you know, with the Passover. And here's going to be kind of an interlude between one of the most famous stories, which is the first Passover, and then tomorrow we're going to talk about where they cross the Red Sea. But there's a spot right here in the middle that, be honest with you, I miss all the time. And it's basically the goodness of God with a holy detour. And I love this because let me tell you what happened to me one time.
The GPS Lesson On Trust
SPEAKER_01One time, I was on my way from a city back home, and I had driven this road literally a hundred times. Like this, I my my car could have got there by itself. And I was on this stretch of highway where Interstate, where I would go like 60 miles without a turn. I get 20 miles up, you know, so quite a ways left to go. And it tells me to get off on an exit. And it was showing me that just like a mile up from that was like just red. Just you could tell something had happened. But for some reason, I was like, no, I don't think that's true. I don't think that's true at all. And so I decided to just go ahead and ignore it. And it was a little longer than that because I another exit had come up, and another exit had come up, rather, and it told me to turn again. And I was like, no, I just don't think that's true. And so I kept going. And after I passed the second one, as soon as I go around the corner, I see why it was telling me to do that. There were cars as far as I could see. And I went into one of the longest traffic jams. I don't know what happened. I hope everybody was okay. All I know is I wasn't okay. It took me forever to get home because I did not want to take the detour. Well, the nation of Israel, they have just been liberated from bondage. They are free. They are free and they don't know what to do. I mean, they for 430 years. So their grandparents, grandparents, grandparents have never known freedom, and now they're free. They don't know where to go. They're gonna head out. Well, God takes them on a holy detour because he knows better than they do, and it's for a real good reason. So if you're ready, let's read God's word and let's see what it has to say to us
Exodus 13 Firstborn And Unleavened Bread
SPEAKER_01today. Here we go. Exodus 13, verse 1 says this. Then the Lord said to Moses, Dedicate to me every firstborn among the Israelites. The first offspring to be born of both humans and animals belongs to me. So Moses said to the people, This is a day to remember forever, the day you left Egypt, the place of your slavery. Today the Lord has brought you out by the mighty power of his hand. Remember, eat no food containing yeast. On this day in early spring, in the month of Abib, you have been set free. You must celebrate this event in this month, each year, after the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites, and Jebusites. And he swore to your ancestors that he would give you this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. Now pause. Remember, anytime it says it, it means people group. So it's the people group living in Canaan and Hittite country, people group of the Amorites, that kind of thing. But then also remember when it says milk and honey, that doesn't necessarily mean that there's a whole lot of milk cows and there's a whole lot of bees flying around. That's not exactly what it means. What it means is milk and honey means that the process of life, the circle of life is continuing. So like there is enough, there's enough pasture land for animals to graze so that milk can be produced. And there's bees and things like that that are pollinating stuff so the honey can go. So it is a land that can sustain life. So what he's saying is a land that sustains life. All right, verse six for the seven days, the bread you eat must be made without yeast. On the seventh day, celebrate the feast to the Lord. Eat bread without yeast during those seven days. In fact, there must be no yeast on bread or any yeast at all to be found within the borders of your land during this time. On the seventh day, you must explain to your children, I am celebrating what the Lord did for me when I left Egypt. This annual festival will be a visible sign to you, like a mark branded on your hand or your forehead. Let it remind you always to recite this teaching of the Lord with a strong hand, the Lord has rescued you from Egypt. So observe the decree of the festival at the appointed time each year. This is what you must do when the Lord fulfills the promise he swore to you and to your ancestors, when he gives you the land where the Canaanites now live. You must present all firstborn sons and male animals to the Lord, for they belong to him. The firstborn donkey may be bought back from the Lord by presenting a lamb or a young goat in its place. But if you do not buy it back, you must break its neck. However, you must buy back every firstborn son. In other words, you can't be breaking their necks because you ain't got no change, okay? You got to buy them back. And in the future, your children will ask, What does all this mean? Then you will tell them, With the mighty power of his hand, the Lord has brought us out of Egypt, the place of our slavery. Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go. So the Lord killed all the firstborn males throughout the land of Egypt, both people and animals. That is why I now sacrifice all firstborn males to the Lord, except the firstborn sons are always bought back. This ceremony will be like a mark branded on your hand or your forehead. It is a reminder that the power of the Lord's mighty hand brought us out of Egypt. Now pause. So he said, There cannot be any yeast for seven days, and you must pay for, you must give God something for the firstborn. And he just told you why. The reason why that they are doing this is because it is a reminder to them that the yeast was because they had to get out of Egypt quickly. You know, you put yeast in bread, it takes time to rise, but there was no time for it to rise. They had to get out of there. So it's going to be a reminder every year. We once were slaves, but now we're free. And then the reason why they have to go and they have to, quote, buy back the firstborn son is it's a reminder that the Lord saved our firstborn son. So the goal is to always remind them to be thankful for their freedom. Not a bad idea. All right, here we go, verse 17.
God Chooses The Safer Route
SPEAKER_01When Pharaoh finally let the people go, God did not lead them along the main road that runs through Philistine territory. Even though that was the shortest route to the promised land, God said, If the people are faced with a battle, they might change their minds and return to Egypt. So God led them in a roundabout way through the wilderness toward the Red Sea. Thus the Israelites left Egypt like an army ready for battle. Moses took the bones of Joseph with him. Pause, remember that? Remember back in the book of Genesis when God, or when when Joseph told the people, When you leave, take me with you? Well, they did. Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph had made the sons of Israel swear to do this. He said, God will certainly come to help you. When he does, you must take my bones with you from this place. The Israelites left Succath and camped at Etham on the edge of the wilderness. And the Lord went ahead of them. He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and he surrounded, and he provided a light at night as a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night. And the Lord did not remove the pillar of cloud or the pillar of fire from its place in front of the people. Wow.
When Life Feels Like A Detour
SPEAKER_01So think about this. The nation of Israel, they're now free. And as they are going, they could have gone straight across, which would have taken them across Philistine territory, but they never fought in a battle before. They'd never had to stand against an army of people before. And God knew they weren't ready. So instead, he took them on a detour because he knew that was best for them in the long term. But he didn't tell them where to go and then say, I'll see you on the other side. But another miracle that he caused a cloud, a pillar. So a pillar is a vertical object. And so it was a pillar of a cloud that there was it was a cloud that would go from from the sky down to earth, and then a pillar of fire as well. And that is what led them. It's an absolute total miracle. And God took them in the way that they needed to go, maybe not necessarily the quickest way, because he knew it was best for them. And just like in my story I was telling earlier, sometimes we think we know better, don't we? I mean, I thought I knew better than a multi-billion dollar satellite up in the sky who has a complete bird's eye view of the ground, knows exactly where it is, and is it is like can knows exactly what to do, and I'm like, nah, I got this. Well, I paid the price for it. Thank goodness it was just the price of just a few hours of my time. But how many times do we do that to God? God, I want to go here. But instead, God leads us through something that looks like a detour. And then we get so unhappy with God, don't we? God, why why did you? How could you? Why would you? It was just right there. I could have got there in a week. It took me a year. God, why did you? I knew you could. I really thought you should. And I I don't understand why you wouldn't. But maybe God knows something we don't. We have to understand in our hearts or decide in our hearts, do we truly trust the Lord? Do we truly trust that if we're doing the best we can, that He leads us? Here's the other thing that can kind of mess with our theology a little bit. Even when we're not doing the best we can, you ever realize the fact that God still doesn't give up on us? And He is leading us along the way. I love that about the nation of Israel. He didn't He didn't say, Well, since you guys aren't ready, I'll see y'all at the Red Sea. Instead, He led them through the detour. Every detour of life isn't as much a detour as it is the direction God is taking us, and God leads us every step of the way. So maybe maybe you're listening or watching this, and you'd say, Pastor, I know all about detours. I I was planning on being done with school in four years, and I'm on that eight-year plan, you know, or I thought I'd be moved up in my company by now, and I've actually been demoted. I thought my marriage was gonna last for 40 years, and and we've been divorced for almost a year now. So-and-so is supposed to be in my life, and they're not there anymore. I I don't think it's a detour as much as it is a crash. God's faithful. God's with you more than you realize, He's for you more than you realize, and He'll never, ever, ever give up on us. So, how about we just make a choice that we're not gonna give up on him? You know, it is possible to take a detour with tears in our eyes. It is possible to take a detour while we're shaking our head, going, God, I really would rather not. But I have chosen to trust you because you are trustworthy. And as we see with the nation of Israel, it was the only way. Maybe what season God has us in right now is the only way for us to get to exactly where He wants us to be.
A Prayer To Trust God
SPEAKER_01Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you're with us and that you're for us. I'm thankful, God, that you take us on detours because you know it's the only way. Lord, we trust you in that. I pray you'll forgive us sometimes when our trust gets weak, we get weary. Help us, Lord, to trust you more because you are trustworthy. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Freedom Promise And Next Chapter
SPEAKER_01Amen. Well, God's word says in Exodus 6, verse 6, it says, I will free you from your oppression and I will rescue you from slavery. I'm so thankful that we serve a God of freedom. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Exodus chapter 14.
