A sea splits, an empire collapses, and the very first thing God’s people do is sing. Exodus 15 gives us the Song of Moses, a raw, vivid praise anthem that names the miracle in detail so nobody forgets who saved them. We lean into why that matters for real life: gratitude is not a mood, it’s a spiritual practice that trains your memory, steadies your nerves, and strengthens your faith for whatever comes next.

We also linger on Miriam’s reprise, tambourine and all, because worship is meant to be shared. When we stop and celebrate together, we don’t just relive the past, we build confidence for the future. If you’ve been running from one problem to the next, this chapter challenges a common habit: focusing so hard on the next mountain that we never look back and say, “God, thank you for getting me over the last one.”

Then the story turns fast from victory to need: three days without water, and the only water they find is bitter at Marah. We talk about complaining, crying out, and God’s surprising provision, plus the promise that frames the moment: the Lord is the one who heals. There’s also a provocative idea to sit with: sometimes what looks like a setback could be a strange kind of mercy, the kind that clears out old cravings and prepares you for freedom.

Before you go, we give you simple homework: write down one specific way God has come through for you, like a short testimony you can reread when you’re under pressure. Exodus 15 Sets Up Praise

SPEAKER_01

Well everybody, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Exodus chapter 15. And today's title is Praise Break. We're going to have a Praise Break. I wish I had a handkerchief and I'd be just be getting old school Pentecostal and just be just flagging that thing all over the place because a miracle has just happened and now Moses is going to have to have a song about it. It's going to be fun. It's going to be great. Make sure you get your Bibles out. Make sure you get your Bible journals out. Also make sure you take just a moment, like, share, subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you leave us a five-star review on the podcast. It really does help. And make sure you're going to the Bible breakdown discussion on Facebook. That's an amazing group of people doing a wonderful job. And as always, you can get all that information at the BibleBreakdown.com. Well, once again, if you've been with us, we just got through experiencing one of the greatest miracles in the Old Testament. The nation of Israel has been freed from Egyptian bondage. They get what uh they go through a detour. It looks like their backs are up against the wall. It's a dead end, or so it would seem. And then God makes a highway through the sea. They go through on dry ground. The water covers back over the Egyptians. I mean, the most formidable force in the world, probably at the time, and they are laid waste by God. And now here they are. I mean, you got to think, these people were not ready to fight. They had no idea how to protect themselves, but God did it. Won't He do it, man? And in that moment, Moses is like, listen, somebody give me a beat. I got a song I need to sing. And Moses just takes, he just takes the high note and he just starts to sing. And so we're going to listen to what he has to say. And then it's going to end with a very interesting chap uh part of the chapter that has something kind of kind of sneakily significant in it. I can't wait to share it with you.

The Song Of Moses Read Aloud

SPEAKER_01

So here we go. Exodus chapter 15, verse 1 says this. Then Moses said to the people of Israel, and excuse me, then Moses and the people of Israel, sang this song to the Lord. I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously. He has hurled both horse and rider into the sea. The Lord is my strength and my song. He has given me victory. This is my God, and I will praise him. My father's God and I will exalt him. The Lord is a warrior. Yahweh is his name. Pharaoh's chariots and army he has hurled into the sea. The finest of Pharaoh's officers are drowned in the Red Sea. The deep waters gushed over them. They sank to the bottom like a stone. Your right hand, O Lord, is glorious in power. Your right hand, O Lord, smashes the enemy. In the greatness of your majesty you overthrow those who rise against you. You unleash your blazing fury. It consumes them like straw. At the blast of your breath the waters piled up. The surging waters stood straight like a wall. In the heart of the sea the deep waters became hard. The enemy boasted, I will chase them and will catch up with them. I will plunder them and consume them. I will flash my sword, my powerful hand will destroy them. But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters. Who is among the gods, O Lord, glorious in holiness, awesome in splendor, performing great wonders? You raised your right hand, and the earth swallowed our enemies. With your unfailing love you lead the people you have redeemed. In your might you guide them into your sacred home. The people hear and tremble. Anguish grips those who live in Philistia. The leaders of Edom are terrified. The nobles of Moab tremble. All who live in Canaan melt away. Terror and dread fall upon them. The power of your arm makes them lifeless as stone. Until your people pass by, O Lord, until the people you purchased pass by. You will bring them in and plant them on your mountain, the place, O Lord, reserved for your own dwelling, the sanctuary, O Lord, that your hands have established. The Lord will reign forever and ever. When Pharaoh's horses, chariots, and charioteers rushed into the sea, the Lord brought the water crashing down on them. But the people of Israel had walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground. Then Miriam, the prophet, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine and led all the women as they played their tambourines and danced. And Mariam sang this song, Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously. He has hurled both horse and rider into the sea.

Miriam’s Reprise And Holy Celebration

SPEAKER_01

Then Moses led the people of Israel away from the Red Sea, and they moved out into the desert of Shur. They traveled in the desert for three days without finding any water. When they came to the oasis of Mara, water was too bitter to drink, so they called the place Mara, which means bitter. Then the people complained and turned against Moses. What are we going to drink? They demanded. Moses cried out to the Lord for help, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water and made the water good to drink. It was there at Mara that the Lord set before them the following decree as a standard to test their faithfulness to him. He said, If you will listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his sight, obeying his commands and keeping his decrees, then I will not make you suffer any of the diseases I sent on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord who heals you. After leaving Mara, the Israelites traveled to the oasis of Elim, where they found twelve springs and seventy palm trees, and they camped there beside the water.

Why Gratitude Strengthens Future Faith

SPEAKER_01

Wow. So Moses took a moment, he said, Can you give me, can you give me middle sea, please? And he just starts singing about the goodness of God. And then when he was done, Miriam, his sister, was like, Excuse me, we need a reprise. And so they she took a tambourine, which didn't help anybody, and she went and she just sang the reprise. And it was just a great moment of just honoring God. And that would have been enough for us to just to reflect on right there. And that is how often do we pause and just say thank you? I don't want to say that, I don't put that on you at all, but but many times I am so busy thinking about the next mountain to climb that I pause, I don't pause enough to say, God, thank you for bringing me over that one. I had no idea how I was gonna get over that one. And the reason why it is so important is because we need to remember that God brought us over those mountains so that we will remember the next time we face one. So that's already one thing.

Bitter Water At Marah And Trusting God

SPEAKER_01

But here's another one that thinks really interesting. I I heard a a teacher once say that the reason why the waters of Mara was bitter was because it was alkaline water. And it was, they could have drank it, but it would have made them sick. And even though God fixed it because they complained, uh here's an interesting thing, and that is this that if they drank that water, it would have made them sick. But if they when they had gotten sick, they would have thrown up and they would have thrown up all of the food that they had gotten from Egypt, and they would have also, it would have cleansed their palates so that they would not have had the taste for the things of Egypt in their mouth anymore. Now we're gonna find out over the next couple of chapters that they are gonna quickly start to miss all of the different foods and the different things that they got from Egypt. And so what looked like a problem actually would have been one of the best things that could have happened to them. It would have made them sick, but it would have helped them more in the long run. So that there are actually two lessons we can learn from this chapter. Number one is sometimes when we go through difficult times, we think God is not with us. But actually, a little bit of pain does us so much more good in the long run. And we don't believe that unless we trust the doctor. You know, I've I've seen sometimes my daughters would get so upset because they get sick and the antibiotic pill that they would get was just, I mean, look like it looked huge, you know, and they just start crying. There's no way I can take that pill, Dad. I'd be like, well, babe, listen, if you don't trust me, trust the doctor. It the doctor says if you take this, it'll be I just don't think I can, Dad. Just take it. Just please, just trust me. And then they take it and they get better. And many times we'll go through difficult seasons, and if we don't trust that the Lord is with us, then we can wonder, God, how can you get anything good from this? But if we trust him, then even sometimes when we go through something bad, it is always for our ultimate good. That's one lesson. The other one though, I really want to focus in on is when is the last time we took a moment before moving on to the next task, just to stop, look behind us, and go, man, won't he do it? Wasn't that great? I mean, I I wouldn't have done it that way. He did it a whole lot better. That that's amazing. And just take a moment and just celebrate.

Homework To Write Your Testimony

SPEAKER_01

I want to give you some homework if I can. I want you to take just a moment and I want you to think about one of the last things that God did for you. One of the last just maybe seasons God brought you through. And then I I'd love for you to to write it down. Maybe you take out your your notes app on your phone or maybe in your journal, but just write down if you were to put it into a story for someone else. You know, I I would, I mean, extra credit if you turn it into a song, but if you were to tell a story of let me tell you about the time when God did this and just craft it into a testimony, you might be surprised that if you will write that down, how God will bring that up in your future because it's so easy to forget about the goodness of God because that next mountain looks pretty big. But if we write those down, I just realize in my own life, God brings it back to us when we need it the most to remind us that if he was with us before, he'll be with us again.

Prayer And Closing Promise

SPEAKER_01

Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you're with us. Thank you, God, that you you don't hold it against us when we don't stop and and pray and talk to you. But at the same time, God would be so good for us if we did. So we know, Lord, when we thank when we thank you and we praise you, it it doesn't change your nature. You're still good all the time. It reminds us of how good you are. I pray, Lord, today, as we take a moment to reflect on your goodness, you'll remind us how truly awesome you are. We celebrate you today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. Well, God's Word says in Exodus 6, verse 6, he says, I will free you from your oppression and I will rescue you from slavery. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Exodus chapter 16.
