They saw the Red Sea split, watched their enemies fall, and still looked at the desert and said, “We’re going to starve.” That’s Exodus 16, and it’s way closer to our daily life than we like to admit. We walk through Israel’s complaints, God’s patient response, and the moment the ground turns white with a mysterious gift that makes everyone ask, “What is it?”

We talk about manna as more than a miracle meal. It’s a day-by-day trust exercise that refuses to let fear run the schedule. Gather what you need today. Don’t hoard tomorrow’s portion. Pay attention to what happens when people try to control the outcome anyway. Then the chapter pivots to the Sabbath, where God builds rest into survival by providing a double portion on the sixth day. The point isn’t just obedience, it’s believing God is telling the truth about provision, limits, and freedom.

The longer we sit with Exodus 16, the more it becomes a gratitude check. We can be surrounded by God’s kindness and still complain that we didn’t get the version we wanted. If you’re praying for the next miracle, we’ll also challenge you to look around and name the “million little miracles” already in your life, from breath to strength to daily bread. If this encouraged you, subscribe, share the episode, and leave a five-star review so more people can find it.

We’d love to hear from you. (For questions, use the links above.)

So thank you for joining us and let's get into breaking down the Bible together.

SPEAKER_01

Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Exodus chapter 16. And today's title is What Is It? What is it? Have you ever gone to someone's house and you ate something? And before you ate it, you looked at it and you were kind of suspicious. You're like, okay, look, I don't know what it is, but it looks like something terrible. You know, and then they go, just trust me, just try it. And and you do, you try it, knowing pretty sure this is the end of your friendship. And then you try it and you're like, oh my, this is really good. And then what do you say? What is it? Well, that's gonna happen today on the backside of wanting to just, I mean, can we just be really honest? Just wanting to thump the Israelites on the nose. Like, are you serious? You just got through. Look, I'm gonna save, I'm gonna save my frustration for just a little while, but just trust me, uh, you're probably gonna be a little frustrated as well, for this is over with. Okay, here we go. Let's let's get into this.

How To Support The Podcast

SPEAKER_01

But first, make sure you take just a moment to like, share, and subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure you leave us a five-star review on the podcast, it really does help. And make sure you're going to the Bible breakdown discussion on Facebook. There's an amazing group of people doing a wonderful job. And as always, you can get all that information at the Biblebreakdown.com. By the way, if you are watching, I do realize that I had the wrong thing on the screen. And it's because I'm so torn up about this. So let's just get into it. If you've been with us for the past several days, we have seen God just, I mean, it's been one banger after another. I mean, he lays waste to the gods of Egypt. I mean, it's crazy. Then he looks at Pharaoh and he says, Oh no, no, I am in charge, not you, Broski. And he just lays waste to him. Then he takes

Miracles Then Complaints

the Israelites on a detour because that's what they needed. Then he not only takes them to a detour because that's what they needed, then he makes a highway in the sea and he kills the Egyptians on the backside. Moses takes a praise break, and they are on their way. Now, as they are on their way, they start to complain. Okay, think about this. Let's say, let's say you're about to be in the dead. You are about to get killed. Someone's coming to jump you, and they pull out a knife. And then out of nowhere, Superman comes in and he says, Hey man, I love Jesus and I know you're a Christian, so I was just gonna help you out. It's my story, I'm making it up. And he saves it, saves you. Would you then complain if you went to the restaurant and you didn't have enough money to supersize it? No, I just have my life saved. But here we go. Here is the Israelites, and they they got all this smoke for God. So here we go.

Exodus 16 Enters Wilderness Of Sin

SPEAKER_01

Let's read it. Verse 16 or chapter 16, verse 1 says this. Then the whole community of Israel, so like they're all good, they set out from Elam and journeyed into the wilderness of sin, which is really ironic that it's called the wilderness of sin, but here we are. All right, so between Elam and Mount Sinai, they're on their way to Mount Sinai where they're going to get the law of God. Here we go. They arrived there on the 15th day of the second month, one month after leaving the land of Egypt. So it takes them one month to get from the land of Egypt to Mount Sinai. There too, the whole community of Israel complained about Moses and Aaron. If only the Lord had killed us back in Egypt, they moaned. There we sat around with pots filled with meat and ate all the bread we wanted. But now you have brought us into the wilderness to starve us all to death. Then the Lord said to Moses, Look, I'm going to rain down from heaven for you. Each day the people can go out and pick up as much food as they need for that day. I will test them to see whether or not they will follow my instructions. On the sixth day they will gather food, and when they prepare it, it will be twice as much as usual. So Moses and Aaron said to all the people of Israel, By evening you will realize that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt. In the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your complaints, which is against him, not against us. What have we done to you that you should complain about us? Pause. That is a Bible way of saying, You're a bunch of idiots, but God's going to come through. Here we go, verse 8. Then Moses added, The Lord will give you meat to eat in the evening and bread to satisfy you in the morning, for he has heard all your complaints against him. What have we done? Yes, your complaints are against the Lord, not against us. Then Moses said

to Aaron, Announce to this entire community of Israel, present yourselves before the Lord, for he has heard your complaining. And as Moses spoke, or excuse me, as Aaron spoke, the whole community of Israel, they looked out toward the wilderness, and they could see it, the awesome glory of the Lord in the cloud. Then the Lord said to Moses, I have heard the Israelites' complaints. Now tell them, in the evening you will have meat to eat, and in the morning you will have all the bread you want. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God. Verse thirteen. That evening vast numbers of quail flew in and covered the camp. The next morning the area around the camp was wet with dew. When the dew evaporated, a flaky substance as fine as frost blanketed the ground. The Israelites were puzzled when they saw it. What is it? They asked each other. They had no idea what it was. And Moses told them, It is the food the Lord has given you to eat. These are the Lord's instructions. East household should gather as much of it as they need, pick up two quarts for each person in your tent. So the people of Israel did as they were told. Some gathered a lot, some only a little.

"What Is It" Manna On The Ground

SPEAKER_01

And those who gathered only a little, that's all they needed. Each family had just what it needed. Then Moses told them, Do not keep any of it until morning. But some of them didn't listen, 'cause of course. And they kept some of it till morning. But by then it was full of maggots and had a terrible smell, and Moses was very angry with them. After this, the people gathered the food morning by morning, each family according to its needs. Then and the sun became hot, the flakes they had not picked up melted and disappeared. On the sixth day they gathered twice as much as usual, four quarts for each person instead of two. Then all the leaders of the community came and asked Moses for an explanation. He told them, This is what the Lord commanded. Tomorrow will be a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath day set apart for the Lord. So bake and boil as much as you want today, and set aside what is left for tomorrow. So they put some aside until

morning, just as Moses had commanded. In the morning the leftover food was wholesome and good, without maggots or odor. Moses said, Eat this food today, for today is a Sabbath dedicated to the Lord. There will be no food on the ground today. You may gather food for six days, but the seventh day is the Sabbath, and there'll be no food on the ground that day. Some of the people went out anyway, because of course they did, on the seventh day, but they found no food. Shocker. The Lord said to Moses, How long will these people refuse to obey my commands and instructions? They must realize that the Sabbath is the Lord's gift to you. That is why he gives you a two-day supply on the sixth day, so there's enough for two days. On the Sabbath day, you must each stay in your place. Do not go and pick up food on the seventh day. So the people did not gather any food on the seventh day. The Israelites called the food manna, because it was white like coriander seed, and it tasted like honey wafers. By the way, manna means what is it? Moses said, This is what the Lord commanded. Fill two quarts of a container of manna and preserve it for your descendants. Then later generations will be able to see the food I gave you in the wilderness when I set you free from Egypt. Moses said to Aaron, Get a jar and fill it with two quarts of manna, and then put it in a sacred place

Sabbath Rest And Double Portion

SPEAKER_01

before the Lord to preserve it for future generations. Pause. Eventually they make the Ark of the Covenant and they put it in there. Verse 34. Aaron did just as the Lord commanded Moses. He eventually placed it in the there it goes, in the Ark of the Covenant, in front of the stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant. I forgot that was there. All right, verse 35. So the people of Israel ate manna for forty years until they arrived in the land where they would settle. They ate manna until the day, until they came to the border of the land of Canaan. The container used to measure the manna was an omer, which is one tenth of an ephah, which is about two quarts. Wow. So the people see the Red Sea part. Then they see the Egyptians destroyed. Then God takes the alkaline bitter water, makes it sweet. He's they survive for a month, and they get to Mount Sinai and they're like, Where's the meat? Where's where's the food? Where Moses, why don't you bring us out here to kill us? Do you mean to tell me you haven't seen enough miracles yet? And so God's like, okay, fine. All right, they still don't trust me. So here's a whole bunch of quail. And then he gives them honey bread to eat. It says it tasted like honey wafers. For 40 years, they had honey toast for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. What do you eat? I don't get to have honey toast for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but they do. And they're

like, oh, if only we were in Egypt. You were in slavery. You were in slavery in Egypt. Yeah, but you know, we have filet mignons there. You know who cooked them? You did. You know who had to go, yo, raise the cattle? You did. You know who ate the best part? Not you did. Oh my goodness. And it is so easy to get frustrated because even then God was like, okay, so I'm going to do this for you. But if you don't mind, don't save me until morning. What do they do? They save until morning. Then on the sixth day, if you don't mind, don't go out the next day. What do they do? They go out the next day. Even to the point that God is telling Moses, it's almost like you can see God just massaging his temples and he's going, you know, I'm not real sure what else I can do for these people. And I I want to get so frustrated with them until I think about me. I can't tell you how absolutely convicting this chapter is, if I'm honest with you. And every time that I'm acting like I'm mad at them, I'm not mad at them. I'm mad at my own self. Because after

Getting Convicted By Gratitude

SPEAKER_01

God does so much for me, I'm still like, but God, I mean, think about it. Just today, let's say that you're listening to this at the end of the day. God woke you up this morning. Um, most likely your heart is still beating. You breathed in and out. You, if you can, if you can see, you you can see. If you can move, you can do that. If you had a job, you're able to do that. If you have a family, you're able to do that. If you're able to walk at all, you're able to do that. You know, any of these things, if you don't have these, you have other ones. You have all these blessings. You you ate food today, you were able to do whatever. You get to the end of the day and you go, but God, I didn't, I was wanting a steak, not a hamburger. Oh my goodness. And and that does it, that that doesn't mean that we don't have needs, and that doesn't mean that God doesn't want to help us with all these different kinds of things. But have we ever thought about how absolutely spoiled we are? And I mean that in the best possible way. God is so good to us. And so I'm just gonna go and give you a spoiler alert. This is going to be a recurring theme with the nation of Israel. The nation of Israel is gonna continue to see the goodness of God, and they're going to continue to wonder why God's not good to them. And it is so stinking convicting. Every time we're gonna want to get a little bit frustrated with them, we need to remember that we are exactly like this. Over and over again, we get to see the goodness of God, and for many of us, we come away going, I sure wish God would do something good for me.

Look For Miracles Already Given

SPEAKER_01

He does. And so I want to encourage you today. Today, instead of asking God for your next miracle, look around and see the miracles he's already given you. That doesn't mean you don't need another miracle. That doesn't mean that you're not gonna pray for it later. But for right now, look at all the miracles he's already given you. And me and you today, we're just gonna take a little time and we're gonna be thankful. Let me pray for us right now. God, thank you so much for today. Lord, thank you for the thousand things that you did just for us to be together right now. Just just just for us to be able to recognize your goodness is a blessing. I pray today, God, you'll open our eyes to see you more clearly and to see the million little miracles

Prayer And Exodus 17 Preview

SPEAKER_01

that you're doing. Thank you, Jesus, for loving us the way you do. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. Well, God's word says in Exodus 6, verse 6, it says, I will free you from your oppression and I will rescue you from slavery. Isn't it so good to serve a God who gives us freedom? I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Exodus chapter 17.
