Exodus 22: Restoring The Broken
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Freedom can disappear fast when nobody knows the rules. Exodus 22 drops us right into that tension: Israel has been rescued from slavery, but now they have to learn how to live as free people without sliding into chaos, revenge, or exploitation.
We unpack how God builds order from the ground up through practical laws about theft, restitution, property damage, borrowing, and renting. At first glance it sounds like common sense, but that’s the point. God is forming a community where dignity has legal weight and where responsibility protects relationships. We also wrestle with the chapter’s sharp boundaries around sexuality and worship, and why Scripture treats innocence, faithfulness, and the health of a society as connected.
Then the focus turns to God’s heart for the vulnerable: foreigners, widows, orphans, and neighbors in need. Mercy shows up in real-life details like refusing predatory interest and returning a cloak before sunset because someone might need it to sleep. We tie it all back to the Ten Commandments and to Jesus’ simple summary: love God and love your neighbor. The question that lingers is personal and practical: where do you need to fight for your freedom today, and how can you “go first” by being a blessing to someone else?

Restoring The Broken Theme
SPEAKER_01Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Exodus chapter 22. And today's title is Restoring the Broken. Restoring the Broken. I don't know about you, but when I was a teenager, it was amazing to me how quickly things could just fall into chaos. You know what I mean? When I was in junior high, I had uh I played basketball with some friends and we were part of a team. And it was amazing how quickly it would just go from us just, you know, playing basketball, having a good time to where now we are trying to kill each other and just chaos, right? And one of the things we had to have is we had to find a way to have certain ground rules. You know, we had a couple guys who were the leaders, and they would just say, look, if we're going to play basketball, we got to do it like this or do it like that. If we don't, we're gonna kill each other, right? And that's exactly what God is doing. He is taking this slave nation and he is bringing order from chaos. They don't know how to self-govern themselves as a complete nation. They've been slaves for 430 years. And God is slowly but methodically teaching them how to keep
From Chaos To Order
SPEAKER_01the freedom that he has given them. And so we're gonna dive into that and just enjoy God's word as he continues to lay out the plans of freedom for them.

Why Israel Needed Guardrails
SPEAKER_01Well, if you've been with us over the past just couple of weeks now, we have been walking through the journey of the nation of Israel. For 430 years, they have been slaves until God raised up a man named Moses and said, Through Moses, I am going to free you. And he does. It was amazing. And then they see God and his presence on Mount Sinai, and God gives them this instruction. And we have to think about it from the idea of this is what could be now a lawless society. They have no laws to govern themselves. It could just quickly fall into chaos. And the freedom that God gave them could quickly spiral into a death sentence because then it just becomes might makes right, you know, and they don't have a clue what to do. And so what God does is he gives them one of the most liberating plans of freedom that we look at now because so much of, especially if you live in the West, Western society has been founded based on so many of these foundational principles. So we look at these and we go, well, yeah, that that makes common sense to me. It wasn't common back then. It was whoever's the strongest can have what they want. If you own somebody, you can kill them if you like. It was whatever. God is putting dignity around each individual and teaching them how to honor one another while also being free. So it's freedom with responsibility and all these different things. And so today we're going to look at how God is continuing to teach them about being responsible with your freedom as he talks about property and other things. And so let's read God's word together and see what it will say to us today.
Restitution And Property Responsibility
SPEAKER_01Exodus 22, verse 1 says, If someone steals an ox or sheep and then kills it or sells it, the thief must pay back five oxen for each one stolen and four sheep for each sheep stolen. If a thief is caught in the act of breaking into a house and is struck and is killed in the process, the person who killed the thief is not guilty of murder. But if it happens in daylight and the one who is killed the thief, then the one who is killed is, let me try this again, then the one who killed the thief is guilty of murder. A thief who is caught must pay in full or everything for everything he stole. If he cannot pay, he must be sold as a slave to pay for his theft. Verse 4. If someone steals an ox or a donkey or a sheep and it is found in the thief's possession, then the thief must pay double the value of the stolen animal. If an animal is grazing in a field or a vineyard and the owner lets it stray into someone else's field to graze, then the animal's owner must pay compensation from the best of his own grain or grapes. If you are burning thorn bushes and the fire gets out of control and spreads into another person's field, destroying the sheaves or the uncut grain or the whole crop, the one who started the fire must pay for the lost crop. Suppose someone leaves money or goods with a neighbor for safekeeping and they are stolen from the neighbor's house. If the thief is caught, the compensation is double the value of what was stolen. But if the thief is not caught, the neighbor must appear before God who will determine if he stole the property. Suppose there is a dispute between two people who both claim to own a particular ox, donkey, sheep, article of clothing, or any lost property. Both parties must come before God, and the person whom God declares guilty must pay double compensation to the other. Now, suppose someone leaves a donkey, ox, sheep, or any other animal with a neighbor for safekeeping, but it dies or is injured or is taken away, and no one sees what's happening. The neighbor must then take an oath in the presence of the Lord. And if the Lord confirms that the neighbor did not steal the property, the owner must accept the verdict and no payment will be required. But if the animal was indeed stolen, the guilty person must pay compensation to the owner. If it was torn to pieces by a wild animal, the remains of the carcass must be shown as evidence and no compensation will be required. If someone borrows an animal from a neighbor and it is injured or dies when the owner is absent, the person who borrowed it must pay full compensation. But if the owner was present, no compensation is required. And no compensation is required if the animal was rented, for this loss is covered by
Sexual Ethics And Idolatry Warnings
SPEAKER_01the rental fee. Pause. Now, once again, all of this would be considered to be common sense for us today. Yeah, if you rent something and you've paid a rental fee and then it is lost, that's what the rental fee was for, right? But remember, this is a lawless society as of this point. They've been set free from captivity, but they don't know what to do. And so what God is now doing is he is putting boundaries, guardrails, responsibilities to help them keep their freedom so that they can maintain freedom in a lawless society. Here we go. Verse 16. If a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged to anyone and has sex with her, he must pay the customary bride price and marry her. But if her father refuses to let him marry her, the man must still pay him an equal amount to the bride price of a virgin. You must not allow a sorceress to live. I love that, by the way. So first of all, verse 16 to 17 is saying, if you seduce this young lady, you got to take care of her. You can't just seduce this lady and go, I hope you hope your life works. No. Instead, you you now have to take care of her because now she's got to deal with the aftermath of that. You you don't get to just do whatever you got to compensate to the family for this, and you got to take care of her at this point. And then he just throws in, and by the way, kill every sorceress. Because just as this would be a situation where you are taking away the innocence of a young lady, a sorceress would then take away the innocence of worship to God. You go, verse 19. Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal must certainly be put to death. Amen. Verse 20. Anyone who sacrifices to any God other than the Lord must be destroyed. Of course.
Protecting Foreigners Widows Orphans
SPEAKER_01Verse 21, you must not mistreat or oppress foreigners in any way. Remember, you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt. You must not exploit a widow or an orphan. If you exploit them in any way and they cry out to me, then I will certainly hear their cry. My anger will blaze against you, and I will kill you with the sword. Then your wives will be widows, and your children will be fatherless. If you lend money to any of my people who are in need, do not charge interest as a moneylender would. If you take your neighbor's cloak as security for a loan, you must return it before sunset. This coat may be the only blanket your neighbor has. How can a person sleep without it? If you do not turn it, return it and your neighbor cries out to me for help, then I will hear, for I am merciful. You must not dishonor God or curse any of your rulers. You must not hold anything back when you give me offerings from your crops or of your wine. You must give me your firstborn sons. In other words, dedicate them back to me. Verse 30. You must also give me
Lending With Mercy And Basic Dignity
SPEAKER_01the firstborn of your cattle, sheep, and goats, but leave the newborn animals with his mother for seven days, then give it to me on the eighth day. You must be my holy people. Therefore, do not eat any animal that has been torn up or killed by wild animals. Throw it to the dogs. Now remember, we could look at the rest of the book of Exodus, the book of
Offerings Firstborn And Holiness
SPEAKER_01Numbers, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, the rest of the five books of Moses. We could look at it as a commentary on how to live out the Ten Commandments. Remember, the first five commandments were all about how to love God properly. The second five commandments
Love God And Love Others
SPEAKER_01were all about how to love one another properly. And this is laying the groundwork on how to keep freedom by treating others with respect. I think that's why God's wisdom is just so amazing when someone once asked Jesus, okay, what's the cheat code? What is the cheat code to all of this? How do we get this right? God's Jesus said, do two things. Love God and love each other. He said, Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, body, strength, and then love your neighbor as yourself. I think if we were to sum up chapter 22, it would be do right by your brother.
Go First And Be A Blessing
SPEAKER_01Like if you see something going on, don't just stand by. Help. Be part of the solution, not just part of the problem. And what would our world look like if in a world where we have freedom to do whatever we want to do, we also realize that means we have freedom to do right. We have freedom to do good things for one another. Now, the obvious pushback is to this, to this would be, well, yeah, Pastor, I wish someone would do something nice for me. Well, you know what I've noticed in my life, and I I wish I could say I was more consistent with this than I am, but I want to be, and that is when I find that I go first, I stop looking for a blessing and I start looking to be a blessing. I want to be a miracle for somebody else that day. I want to be the one who loves people first. When I start to live my life like that, it is amazing how quickly that also starts happening in my life. And I don't do it for that reason. I do it because God has been so good to me that it is then my honor to bless his creation, to bless my brothers and sisters. But as I do that, I start finding that there's other people like that in the world. It's almost like the old phrase, have you ever heard if you want to go, if you go into the world looking for a friend, you won't find many. If you go into the world looking to be a friend, you will find them everywhere. And it's the idea of we go first. And that's what Exodus 22 is all
Where Do You Need Freedom Today
SPEAKER_01about. It's God saying, I have given you freedom. Now let me show you how to keep it. You do have the freedom to do whatever you want, but that means you have the freedom to do what's right. What does that say to you today? Is there an area of your life that maybe you have been using your freedom to maybe do the wrong things? And maybe you feel like you're just stuck in a trap and you don't know what else to do. Can I tell you? God has made you free so that you can be free. Not so that we can get drawn into other addictions or other bondages or whatever. And that's not easy to do. It's it's hard to maintain freedom. A lot of these things that's going on, you got to think that they're probably saying, Man, you mean to tell me I gotta do this, that, and the other. And God would say, Yeah, freedom takes work, but I've given it to you and I walk with you along the way. What is an area of your life today that you would say, I need to work on my freedom?
Prayer And Final Encouragement
SPEAKER_01Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you see us and you know us. And God, I I believe that you want freedom for us in every area of life. That doesn't mean it's easy, it does mean it's possible. I pray you'll open our eyes to see new areas of our life that we once had given up hope. But today we'll find that we're just a step away from more freedom than we could imagine. And then give us the courage, give us the tenacity, give us the grit to take that next step. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. Well, God's word says in Exodus 6, verse 6, he says, I will free you from your oppression and I will rescue you from slavery. I'm so thankful to serve a God of freedom. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Exodus chapter 23.
