The Bible Breakdown: Daily Bible Reading
Exodus 32: You've Gotta Be Kidding Me
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Forty days. That’s all Moses is gone, and Israel goes from witnessing world-shaking miracles to dancing around a golden calf. Exodus 32 is frustrating, sobering, and way too relatable, because it exposes a pattern we still live out: when God feels slow, we look for something faster, louder, and more controllable.
We retell the scene from the ground up, from the people’s impatience to Aaron’s stunning failure of leadership. We talk about how quickly their language shifts from gratitude to dismissal, and how a “replacement” for God starts to feel reasonable when fear sets the schedule. Then we sit with God’s righteous anger and Moses’ bold intercession, watching a mediator plead for mercy by anchoring himself in God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
From there, the chapter gets painfully practical. Moses comes down, smashes the tablets, confronts Aaron’s ridiculous excuse, and draws a clear line for those who will stand with the Lord. We also connect the story to everyday life: the job you want, the answer you need, the pressure to make something happen now. Idolatry is not only ancient statues, it’s what we trust when we stop waiting, and Exodus 32 helps us name that drift before it hardens.
If you’ve ever wondered what God might be doing while you’re stuck in the waiting, this one is for you. Listen, share it with a friend who needs endurance, and if the podcast helps you, subscribe and leave a five-star review so more people can find it.

Remembering God’s Recent Miracles
SPEAKER_01this. We've been going through the book of Exodus. And let me kind of just let me just kind of set this scenario for you for just a moment. Think about this for a moment, all right? The nation of Israel got to watch the plagues of Egypt. I mean, they watched God deliver them with this mighty hand of power. And then as they were leaving, there was a tower of a cloud, a pillar of cloud, and a fire by night. And they he led them to the Red Sea. And when it looked like their backs were up against the wall, God called the sea to part. They crossed on dry ground, and then he calls the sea to come back together again and destroy all their enemies. I mean, that's a that's powerful and that's amazing. And then they're getting free food every day, every morning. God is giving them this thing called manna. It was basically, they said it tastes like honey wafers every single day. And then at least already once now he's given them meat, he's given them quail to eat. And then they got to see the power of God come down on Mount Sinai. I mean, with lightning and flashing and smoke and just baboom, you know, all of this amazingness. And then God calls the elders of Israel to go up there and they get to meet God and have dinner with him. And then God calls Moses a little bit higher, and for 40 days, he's getting the plan of the tabernacle because God wants to dwell with his people, and all they're told to do is just chill out for 40 days. 40 days. Okay. 40 days. Three, four sets of 10, okay, two sets of 20. 40 days. It's not very long. But while Moses is up there, let's see what the wonderful nation of Israel is up to.
Impatience Turns Into Golden Calf Worship
SPEAKER_01Are you ready? Chapter 32, verse 1. When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. Now, once again, remember how long it was taking Moses. Moses was there for 40 days. They ain't running out of food. They're fine, but they're impatient. So they gathered around Aaron and said, Come on, let us make some, let us make some gods who can lead us. We don't know what happened to this Moses, this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt. So they're already talking about Moses. You know, what whatever. Moses, was that his name? Whatever his name was. We don't know what happened to him. You know, he may have led us from the land of Egypt. We don't know. And then look at this, verse two. So Aaron said, Take the gold rings from your ears of your wives and sons and daughters, and bring them to me. Aaron, what are you doing? Verse three. All the people took the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron. And then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, Oh Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt. Aaron saw how excited the people were. So he built an altar in front of the calf, and he announced, Tomorrow will be a festival to the Lord. The people got up early the next morning to sacrifice burnt offerings and peace offerings. After this, they celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry. The
God’s Anger And Moses’ Intercession
SPEAKER_01Lord said to Moses, Quick, go down the mountain. Your people, I love how he's like, Your people, whom you brought from the lands of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. How quickly they have turned away from the way I commanded them to live. They have melted down gold and made a calf, and they have bowed down and sacrificed to it. They are saying, These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. Then the Lord said, I have seen how stubborn and rebellious these people are. Now leave me alone, so my fierce anger can blaze against them. I will destroy them, then I will make you Moses into a great nation. But Moses tried to pacify the Lord his God. O Lord, he said, Why aren't you so angry with your own people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with such great power and such a strong hand? Why let the Egyptians say, Well, their God rescued them with evil intentions, of slaughtering them in the mountains and wiping them from the face of the earth? Turn away from your fierce anger. Change your mind about this terrible disaster that you have threatened against your people. Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You bound yourself with an oath to them, saying, I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven, and I will give them all of this land that I have promised to your descendants, and they will possess it forever. So the Lord changed his mind about the terrible disaster that he had threatened to bring on the people. Then Moses turned and went down the mountain, and he held in his hands the two stone tablets inscribed on the terms of the covenant, and when the ins and they were inscribed on the front side, on both sides, front and back, these tablets were God's work. The words on them were written by God himself. Then Joshua heard the boisterous noise of the people shouting below them, and he exclaimed to Moses, It sounds like war in the camp. But Moses said, No, it's not the shout of victory, nor the wailing of defeat. I hear the sound of celebration. And when they came near the camp, Moses saw the calf and the dancing, and he burned with anger. He threw the stone tablets to the ground, smashing them at the foot of the mountain, and he took the calf, and he made they had made, and he burned it, and he ground it into powder, and he threw it into the water, and he forced the people to drink it. He's
Moses Smashes Tablets And Questions Aaron
SPEAKER_01so mad. I am too. This is terrible. Verse 21 Finally he turned to Aaron and demanded, This is what I want to know. What did these people do to you to make you bring such terrible sin upon them? That's a great question, Mo. Let's see what he has to say. Don't get so upset, my Lord, Aaron replied. You yourself know how evil these people are. They said to me, Make us gods who will lead us. We don't know what happened to this fellow Moses who brought us here out of the land of Egypt. So I told them, Whoever has gold jewelry, take it off. And when they brought it to me, I simply threw it into the fire and out came a calf. Moses. Let's not believe this. Aaron, you gotta be kidding me. Are you telling me? You're telling me that you just so happened to put a just a bucket load of gold and just a calf came out. Ta-da! Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
A Line In The Sand And Judgment
SPEAKER_01All right. Verse 25. Moses saw that Aaron had let the people get completely out of control, much to the amusement of their enemies. So he stood at the entrance to the camp and shouted, All who were on the Lord's side, come here and join me. And all the Levites gathered around him. And Moses told him, This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says Each of you, take your sword and go back and forth from one end of the camp of the other. Kill everyone, even your brothers, friends, and neighbors. Levites obeyed Moses' command, and about three thousand people died that day. Then Moses told the Levites, Today you have ordained yourself for the service of the Lord, for you obeyed him, even though it meant killing your own sons and brothers, today you have earned a blessing. Now pause. This means that there was a moment there where he said, If you're going to serve God, follow me. If not, go over there. And so these weren't just random people that they were killing. These were people that were in open rebellion against God. All right, verse 30. The next day Moses said to the people, You have committed a terrible sin, but I will go back to the Lord on the mountain. Perhaps I will be able to obtain forgiveness for your sin. Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, Oh, what a terrible sin these people have committed. They have made gods of gold for themselves. But now, if you only forgive their sin, but if not, erase my name from the record you have written. But the Lord replied to Moses, No, I will not erase the name of everyone who has sinned against me. Now go, lead the people to the place I told you about, and look, my angel will lead the way before you. And when I come to call the people to account, I will certainly hold them responsible for their sins. Then the Lord sent a great plague upon the people because they had worshipped the calf that Aaron had made. I
How We Repeat Israel’s Mistake
SPEAKER_01mean, I don't know what to say. I have no words for how frustrating that was. They have seen God do amazing things. And when God delayed just a little while, they lost faith completely. They lost faith in Moses. I mean, they literally said, This fellow Moses, you know, this this random guy. I mean, do we really even know who he is? You know? And and they completely, like it didn't even take much to turn them away. And it's it would be so easy to get angry with the people of Israel if we didn't do the same thing. Think about it. Think about all the things that you and I, first of all, can read about in the Bible. All the amazing things that God has done. Then you think about all the amazing stories and miracles that we've heard about that God has done in the lives of other people. And then think about all the wonderful things that God has done in our life. Chief among them, the fact that He has saved us. And then when God doesn't come through as quickly as we want, how quickly do we begin to turn away from God? We ask God, God, I need a new job. Tired of the one I got. I just I don't I don't feel fulfilled. You know, whatever it is, I don't feel fulfilled. God, I need a new job. You wait a month. Because remember, this is 40 days that Moses was on there. But so it's not even a full 40, but it's 30 days. And God doesn't come through. How many times do we start going, well, maybe God's not faithful. Maybe God's not listening. He knows I need a new job. He's not giving me one. I don't know what's up with God. And all of a sudden our faith starts to turn and we start putting our faith in other things. We start looking to other people. We start trying to make it happen on our own. We start taking taking it out of God's hands and putting it in other people's hands. Why? Because we start to lose patience, start to lose trust. How many times have we done that in all kinds of other ways? So I can't get too mad at him, even though I want to get real mad at him, but I can't get too mad. How many times have we quickly turned away from God just because God asks us for one thing, and that is patience? How many times? How many times? Oh, I want to get so mad, but I can't.
Trust God One More Day
SPEAKER_01And I'm curious about you. Has there ever been times when you said things, did things that mainly had to do with the fact that you got impatient with God's timing? And what what I think is so sad to me, we didn't gonna talk about Aaron. Listen, I got I got I got 99 issues with Aaron because Aaron knew better. Aaron knew better. And we're gonna talk about the fact that Aaron did all this and then God was still faithful and still used him as a high priest. That's crazy to me. I mean, in the best possible way. But think about while they were losing patience and while they were turning against God, God had such great plans that he was making for them. He was talking to Moses about, I want you to do this so that I can be with them. I want you to do that so I can be with them. Oh, I love my people and I can't wait to spend time with them. It's gonna be great, it's gonna be awesome. And the whole time he's doing that, they're worshiping a cow. You know what that reminds me of is while I am sometimes doubting God, what great thing is he doing for me that I don't see? That just brings conviction in my heart to trust God one more day, to not give up one more day. What if I am one day away from God doing something amazing? What if you are one day away? What if we had patience one more day? Because we have no idea what God is doing just a little way away
Prayer And Closing Scripture
SPEAKER_01from us. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you're with us and you're for us. And God, I am so sorry that this has been me so many times. I have lost that patience. I've lost that ability to just wait and trust. I'm so sorry. I pray you will give us all the ability to wait one more day, to trust you one more day, and to know that you are always doing more than we can see. Thank you, God, for loving us the way you do. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. Well, God's word says in Exodus 6, verse 6, he says, I will free you from your oppression and I'll rescue you from slavery. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Exodus chapter 33.
