Psalm 02: The Reigning King

The world gets loud when it feels out of control and Psalm 2 starts right there: angry nations, leaders plotting, and a collective urge to throw off God’s rule. But the surprise is God’s response. He isn’t intimidated. He reigns, He speaks with authority, and He establishes His chosen King.

Psalms As Life’s Soundtrack

Well, if you remember yesterday, we we talked about this intro of the book of Psalms is the soundtrack for life. And this is a collection of five books, actually, a collection, a kind of discography of the greatest hits of Israel. These were written during times of crisis, these were written during times of celebration. And about half of them are written by King David. And David definitely went through all of that in his life. And today's is one that really talks about just probably around the time of the coronation of David. If you remember, David for a while lived under the rule of uh King Saul. And then through time, he eventually became king. And so they think that he may have written this about the time that he finally becomes king, but quickly people began to realize this wasn't just about David. It was also about the true coming king one day. And if you remember, the book of Psalms teaches us how to relate to God by what we read when we read this. And so let's read this together and let's see how this helps us to learn how to do life with God.

Reading Psalm 2 Aloud

So if you're ready, Psalm 2, verse 1 says this Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with feudal plans? The kings of the earth are prepared for battle, and their rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one. Let us break their chains, they cry, and free ourselves from the slavery to God. But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them. Then in anger he rebukes them, terrifying them with his fierce fury. For the Lord declares, I have placed my chosen king on the throne of Jerusalem, on my holy mountain. The king proclaims the Lord's decree. The Lord said to me, You are my son. Today I have become your father. Only ask, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the whole earth as your possession. You will break them with a rod, with an iron rod, and smash them like clay pots. Now then, you kings, act wisely. Be warned, you rulers of the earth, serve the Lord with fervent fear, rejoice with trembling, submit to God, you royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed in the midst of all your activities. For his anger flares up in an instant. But what joy for all who take refuge in him. Okay.

David’s Victory And God’s Promise

Well, what this is about is remember, David has been told for years, you're never going to be king. God may have called you to be king, but it's not going to happen. Look at Saul, he's undefeatable. And and truly, it looked like at any given time David could be killed. But look at what happened. The Bible said that God was with David. And over time, he worked out his plan. And now David, to be honest with you, he's he's getting a little low-sided. He's bowing up a little bit and he's saying, Okay, where y'all at? God is doing exactly what he said. He said he was gonna make me king. He's gonna make me king. What else should I ask God for? Don't y'all threaten me. I mean, he is just absolutely celebrating the faithfulness of God. The final verse says, What joy for all who take refuge in him? In other words, put their hope and their trust in him. I wonder how many times David was in the back of a cave somewhere, crying, hurting, knowing people are laughing at him and mocking him. But the one thing he had to hold on to turned out to be the one thing he needed, and that was the promise of God.

Don’t Quit When Doubts Hit

Can I tell you, how do we relate to God with this? Is God has promised you that you can be confident that he who began a good work within you will continue to complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. Here's the truth. There are gonna be times in your life when people are gonna doubt God's faithfulness. People are gonna doubt that God is gonna be with you. They're gonna doubt it so much, and it's gonna look like that maybe God did leave you so much that you're you're gonna feel the need to maybe even be a little embarrassed. Don't give up. Don't quit. Because if you put your trust in the Lord, God will always come through. And one day you're gonna sing a song like this that's gonna say, you know what? None of you fools believe me. None of y'all believe me when I said that God was gonna take care of me. I served the Lord, I did the best I could, and now look, all glory goes to God. Trust in the Lord and watch what he will do.

Prayer And Final Praise

Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you come through time and time again. I celebrate you. All glory to you, Lord. No pride for ourselves. All glory to you. We celebrate you today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. Well, God's word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, say it with me. It says, I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. There's always a new reason to praise the Lord. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Psalm chapter three.
