Psalm 03: Peace In Chaos

Peace is easy to talk about when life is calm. It’s harder when the threat is real, the betrayal is close, and you’re not even sure who’s on your side. Psalm 3 drops us into one of the darkest moments in David’s life as Absalom overturns his kingdom and David runs with a broken heart and a hunted mind. That’s the setting for a prayer that feels painfully honest and surprisingly hopeful.

Today is one of those Psalms I am so thankful that God had David write this. Once again, this is one of the greatest hits of the people of God as we are singing through the soundtrack for life. And I love that this helps us to learn how to relate to God. And if you have been living longer than about five minutes, you can relate to what David is going to talk about. Well, what we have today is a song written by David. And it was written during one of the darkest moments of his life. I want to ask you this question. Have you ever had somebody that you loved, someone that you believed in, and they disappoint you? Maybe someone you love, someone you believe in, and it turns out that maybe they're not so good after all. Maybe they stab you in the back a little bit. You ever had that happen? Well, imagine they don't just stab you in the back, they literally try to kill you. Imagine they don't just try to kill you, they're trying to kill anyone connected to you. And then imagine it's your son. I mean, David's in a mess. The Bible said that at one point David's son Absalom overthrew his kingdom. He didn't try, he did. David had to go into exile for a little while. And as he is running from his son, and he's and Absalom is killing everyone, he ends up, he ends up having sex with all of David. Absalom has sex with all of David's uh concubines. I mean, he just tries to destroy his father. And as he is running and he is feeling all these conflicted emotions, God, all these bad things are happening. I don't know who's on my side and who's not on my side. I don't know who is my enemy and who is not my enemy. In the middle of this distress, he writes this song. And so let's read it together and just kind of feel the moment that

Reading Psalm 3 Together

David is feeling. It says this in Psalm 3. Oh Lord, I have so many enemies. So many are against me. So many are saying, God will never rescue him. Interlude. So it's like pause, play the bass guitar for a moment. Verse 3. But you, O Lord, are a shield around me. You are my glory, the one who holds my head high. I cried out to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy mountain. Interlude again. Play the play the bass. I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety, for the Lord was watching over me. I am not afraid of 10,000 enemies who surround me on every side. Arise, O Lord, rescue me, my God, slap all my enemies in the face, shatter the teeth of the wicked. Victory comes from you, O Lord. May you bless your people. And then they proceed to have a shout. Interlude one more time.

Reframing Fear Into Trust

I love the fact of how David reframes what's going on. Now remember, the book of Psalms teaches us how to relate to God. And what David does is he says, God, I got 99 problems. I got enemies on every side. I don't know who's for me, who's against me. I got all of this. I got 99 problems. But you aren't one of them. That you are actually a shield for me when everything else is going wrong. How do we relate to God with this? Is to realize that in life, there are going to be bad times. It's going to be trouble. It's going to be difficulties. But God's never one of those. And that actually when the battle gets hotter, God's grace gets greater. And that we can lean on him among everything. And we can trust in him above everything. How does this teach us how to relate to God? That when the battle gets hot, when it gets difficult, we lean into God even more and watch what He will do. He is our confidence. You notice at one point, he's just like, God, man, you bet you're going to do something. You're going to mess with him right here. I mean, he's just, he's starting to almost taunt his enemies at one point because his trust in God is so strong. We can trust in God no matter how big

our enemy. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you are our confidence. You are our strength. I pray that we will come to know you more and more every day. That we won't just look for you in the sunshine, but Lord, we will also find you in the shade. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. Well, God's word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, say it with me. I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. There's always a new reason to give God praise.
