The Bible Breakdown: Daily Bible Reading
Psalm 06: A Cry For Mercy
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Some prayers are polished. Psalm 6 is not one of them. When David says his bones are in agony, his heart is sick, and his bed is soaked with tears, he’s not being dramatic, he’s being honest, and that honesty becomes the doorway to mercy.
We sit with Psalm 6 as a lament psalm and a practical guide for what to do when you feel overwhelmed and can’t even put your finger on what you need. I read the passage straight from the New Living Translation, then slow down to name the tension so many of us live with: we wear masks for people because not everyone is safe, but we do not need a mask with God. He already knows what’s real, and he invites us to bring it into prayer without pretending we’re fine.
Along the way, we talk about why the book of Psalms teaches us how to relate to God, why David’s messy faith is comforting, and how healing often starts with one brave sentence. If your faith feels thin today, take this line with you into your quiet time: “God, I’m not okay, but I don’t want to stay that way.”

SPEAKER_00Hey everyone and welcome to the Bible Breakdown Podcast. In this podcast, we will be breaking down the Bible one chapter a day. Whether you are a new believer or have been following Christ for a while, we believe that you will learn something new and fresh every single day. So thank you for joining us and let's get into breaking down the Bible together.
Today’s Psalm And How To Join
SPEAKER_01Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 6, and today's title is A Cry for Mercy. A cry for mercy. One of the things I love about the Psalms, especially the ones written by David, is he reminds us that the people of God that we read about in the Bible, they were human. They had good days, they had bad days. They had days when they love Jesus, they love Yahweh, but they're not loving everything else going on in their life. And this is one of those songs that I think really gives us permission to just say, God, I need help. And if you've ever been in a position where, listen, you don't even know what you need, you just need it. This is gonna be a really good psalm for you. And maybe give us something to really think about about how we can relate to God and how he wants us to relate to him. So we'll get into all that in just a second. So make sure you get your Bibles, get your Bible journals out. We're gonna be reading out of the New Living Translation. Also make sure you take just a moment, like, share, and subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Make sure to leave us a five-star review on the podcast. It really does help. And make sure you're going to the Bible breakdown discussion on Facebook. There's an amazing group of people doing a wonderful job. You can get all that information at the Biblebreakdown.com because, as always, the more we dig, the more we find. Now,
Psalms As The Soundtrack Of Life
SPEAKER_01if you've been with us over the past couple of days, we have started this long journey through the greatest hits of the people of God. We've been talking about how this would be kind of like, you know, when Taylor Swift came out with all of her songs and it was like just all of these over the course of years. That's a lot what this is like. This is all the way from Moses, just on the other side of the Red Sea crossing, all the way till just a few hundred years before Jesus was born. This was the soundtrack of the people of God through the good days and through the bad days. That's why we're calling it the soundtrack of life. And this is what I love about the book of Psalms. I feel like the book of Proverbs teaches us how to relate to one another, but the book of Psalms teaches us how to relate to God. One of the primary writers, almost half of the writers of the Psalms, was David. And the Bible says David was a man after God's own heart, which means he didn't get it right all the time. And that's one of the things, if you haven't already started to notice the theme, it's uh David's jacked up, just like the rest of us, but he always returns it back to God. And we're gonna see in this psalm how he's just asking for help. And it gives me so much comfort to realize if David needed help, it's okay if I get real with God and tell him I need help. So let's read this together. Psalm chapter
Reading Psalm 6 Aloud
SPEAKER_01six, verse one says this. And it is, by the way, the title is for the choir director, the Psalm of David, to be accompanied by eight stringed instruments. He says this. He says, O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage. Have compassion on me, O Lord, for I am weak. Heal me, O Lord, for my bones are in agony. I am sick at heart. How long, O Lord, until you restore me? Return, O Lord, and rescue me. Save me because of your unfailing love. For you, for the dead do not remember you. Who can praise you from the grave? I am worn out from sobbing. All night long I flood my bed with weeping, drenching it with my tears. My vision is blurred by grief. My eyes are worn out because of all my enemies. Go away, all you who do evil, for the Lord has heard my weeping, the Lord has heard my plea, and the Lord will answer my prayer. May all the enemies, all my enemies be disgraced and terrified, and may they suddenly turn back in shame. Wow.
Taking Off The Mask With God
SPEAKER_01David's having a real bad day. And what I love about this is he's just being honest with God and he's saying, God, I'm not okay. You know, they say that one of the first things in counseling that they want you to do is to just simply admit that you're not okay. You know, a lot of times in different relationships, we will put on different masks, you know, because we don't want to be thought of as the, you know, the weak link in the group, as the as the pitiful person. I'll tell you one all myself, and that is, I can't stand for anyone to take pity on me. If anyone's like, oh, poor Pastor Brandon, I'm like, those are fighting words for me. I just can't stand it, right? And there's so many of you that would probably agree. And so nobody wants to be like that. And so we put masks on. You know, think about it. When someone says, hey, how are you? What is a normal thing most of us will say? Fine. And you, you know, or if you're feeling super spiritual, oh, I am too blessed to be stressed. Come on, somebody. I mean, you know, we say that when our life's falling apart, our health's falling apart, our finances have fallen apart, our kids have fallen apart, our marriage's falling apart, but we're fine, right? Because we don't want to come off as though we're not okay. And what I love about this is David, he says, Lord, don't rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your rage. Other words, God, don't get mad at me. Don't, don't, don't, don't think twice, uh, don't think bad of me. But I just got to tell you, I'm sick. I'm sick at heart. And here's here's maybe the the lesson of the day for us, and that is this God already knows. And so I can't say whether or not it's good or bad to go into a lot of you know situations and have a mask on. Because here's the thing, not everybody's worthy of your trust. Let me just get that out there, right? Not everybody needs to know that you're not having a good day. Now, somebody needs to know we need to have somebody in our lives that we can trust and we can get honest with and all of that. At the same time, God knows when you're having a good day. He knows when you're having a bad day, he knows everything in between. And so what God's word teaches us in this song is instead of putting on a mask when we come into God's presence, we take all those masks off and say, God, I'm not okay. And you know what I love about this is that when we do this, the first thing that God says to us is, I know. And I love you anyway. You know, I love you just the way you are. I just love you too much to let you stay that way. Come on and let's get some healing. I think that maybe is what God is wanting to say some of us today. So I'd encourage you, when you go into your time of prayer today, maybe your only prayer needs to be, God, I'm not okay, but I don't want to stay that way. And watch what He'll do. Let's
Prayer And Final Blessing
SPEAKER_01pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you see us and you know us and you love us anyway. I pray, God, that as we continue to get honest with you in your word and we cry out for your mercy, we'll realize, God, that you answer with your love. I'm thankful for you today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. God's word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, say it with me. He says, I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Psalm chapter seven.
