Psalm 13: Trust In The Waiting

Waiting has a way of turning quiet moments into loud questions. When the timeline stretches and the door stays shut, your mind starts filling the dark with doubts: Did I hear God right? Did He forget me? Is anything happening at all? We start with a simple story about standing on a front porch while someone takes “way too long” to get inside, then we open Psalm 13 and realize David felt the same tension.

Psalm 13 is one of the clearest Bible passages on trusting God in the waiting. David prays with startling honesty, asking, “How long, O Lord?” and describing sorrow that sits in his heart day after day. Then he pivots, not because everything suddenly improves, but because he remembers who God is. We talk about God’s unfailing love, the Hebrew word chesed, and why covenant love is a better anchor than changing circumstances when you’re stuck between promise and fulfillment.

We also get practical about prayer and spiritual growth. Instead of stuffing your emotions, we challenge you to bring them to God plainly: this hurts, this feels lonely, this feels endless. Well, everybody, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 13, and today's title is Trust in the Waiting. Trust in the waiting.

The Front Porch Trust Story

Have you ever had one of those times when you simply had to trust someone? They were doing something for you, they were helping you with something, and you got to wondering, should I be trusting this person? Is this right? You know, it reminds me of one time that uh I was trying to help somebody. They were going to be moving uh their house, and they did not have their keys to their house, which is already sketchy. Found out later their wife had the keys. It was, it was a whole thing. They didn't have keys. And he was like, hey, I'm gonna go around back and I'm gonna have to lift up a window and we're gonna get into the house and we're gonna move whatever. Well, that's weird for me because this is your house, sir. You know, and I'm just waiting on the front porch. It's dark outside, lights not on, and it feels like he is waiting or he is taking 30 minutes. Now it was probably like a minute, but it felt like it was longer. And the amount of thoughts that went through my head was do I know this guy that well? Is this actually his house? I didn't see his name on the mailbox. I mean, I am concocting all of these plans until he opens the door and he opens the door, and immediately right beside him, I see a family portrait. And no, no, I did not tell him that I doubted him one little bit. But it was in that moment of waiting that it was amazing how many, how many things I started to doubt, even though he had never given me a reason not to doubt him, but that's what happens, isn't it?

Why Waiting Breeds Doubt

During times of waiting, all of that stuff comes up. Well, we're gonna talk about that today in Psalm chapter 13. If you ever dealt with trusting God in the waiting, this psalm is for you. Well, once again, we are going through the songbook of the people of God. This is the greatest hits of the people of God all through the Old Testament, from Moses to Malachi. And it is songs that help us know how to relate to God even more. These were songs written out of moments of frustration, of happiness, of joy, of contemplation, of just everything in between, even songs for road trips. And we are going through those one at a time. And this one is a song written by David, and it's a time when he's just having to wait. I we don't know exactly what's going on in this moment, but he's in between the promise and the fulfillment of God, and he's just having to trust God. Just like I was telling you when I was on the, you know, the front porch of this guy's house, he had never given me a reason not to trust him. He seemed like a trusting guy, but it's amazing when you're left alone with your own thoughts, the different things that start kind of going through your head. And so we're going to read this together and just see how how David dealt with those wonderings in God's word.

Here we go. Psalm 13, verse 1 says this How long, O Lord, will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way? How long must I struggle in anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day? How long will my enemy have the upper hand? Turn and answer me, O Lord my God. Restore the sparkle to my eyes, or I will die. Don't let my enemies gloat, saying, We have defeated him. Don't let them rejoice at my downfall. I, but I am trusting your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me. I will sing to the Lord because he is good to me. I I love the honesty of David. He starts it off with, God, are you gonna forgive me forever? It's like the middle picture of me on that front porch, kind of knocking again. Hey bro, you remember? I mean, you go get make yourself a sandwich or something. I'm out here. I I was here to help you, you know, that kind of thing. But then in the moment you go, wait a minute. He has never given me a reason not to trust him. Matter of fact, he's given me plenty of reasons to trust him. So I'm gonna trust him. And you know it's the same thing with God. That's what David

Chesed And Unfailing Love

is saying. He said, But you know what? I am gonna trust in your unfailing love. The the Hebrew word for it is chesed. It is the unfailing, unrelenting, it's like a river of flowing of love. In other words, there's no beginning, there's no end, it continues always. I will trust that you love me yesterday, today, and forever. That you've always loved me, you'll always, you always will, and I'm gonna put my trust in that. And can I tell you sometimes the hardest part of walking with God, it seems like, is in the waiting. Because the moment when you feel like God gives you a promise, that's wonderful. I mean, that is so much fun. Like God's giving me a promise. And then, of course, the fulfillment of the promise is great, you know? It's in the middle. Because in the middle, you don't know when the ending is coming. You don't know if God's gonna make a way the next day, the next month, the next year, or is he gonna make a way in a very different way than what you had planned? You have no idea. But can I tell you, it's in those moments that God is still faithful. And I just want to encourage you today.

How To Pray While Waiting

The Bible teaches us how to relate to God, and that is first of all, to be honest with Him. What if in your prayer time today you just got honest with God and say, God, I feel like I am just waiting forever out here. I feel like I am. And you just be honest and say, God, this this hurts, it's hard. It feels alone. I feel alone out here. But then finish it with, I trust you because you're good. And watch what the Lord does in your heart and watch how he opens your eyes to see that you're not alone, that he's been working the whole time. Just like my friend, he wasn't just sitting on the outside, on the inside of the door just staring at me. Yeah, he was in the process of getting into the house, getting around, getting over that. I mean, he was busy while I was waiting. God is busy while you're waiting. There's no telling what good things God has just around the corner.

Let's pray together. Thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you are doing more than we can imagine. I pray that today, God, we will learn to trust you more, to have more joy in the waiting, and to know, God, that one day soon our eyes are going to open and we're gonna see what you've been doing this whole time. We celebrate you today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. Well, God's word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, say it with me. It says, I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Psalm chapter 14.
