The Theme Park Height Line Lesson

Have you ever been at an amusement park, theme park, something like that? And they've got like the height line, you know, that if you're not so tall, you can't get on a ride. Well, when my girls were much little, we went to this theme park and they had those lines. And my youngest daughter was just tall enough to make it to some of these rides. And I would tease her so much. I'm like, babe, you know, we you better get on your tiptoes for this one. I don't know. You know, and it was just fun. We had a good time. But every single time we were like, okay, wait a minute. Is she gonna be able to do this? Is she not gonna be able to do this? And we had to really just to know, I mean, is is this, is this gonna be all right? Is she gonna be able to? And of course she was she was big enough. But they would do that because they say, hey, listen, there's there's rules. If if you don't meet the the height requirement, it is not safe for you. You know, you are not eligible to go up there. You have to meet the requirement. It's just the way it is. If you're gonna play a game, you gotta play by the rules. If you're gonna drive on the road, you got to do, you mean there's there's just rules you got to follow, right? Well, in this psalm, David is talking about, man, I want to be close to God. But what does that even mean? It's that's a fuzzy thing. And so what's the what's the height limit? You know, if we can like this, what's the rules of the road? What are the guidelines so that if I want to get close to God, if I want to worship the Lord in his presence, what do I do? And I'm so glad that God's word tells

more we find. Well, you've been with us over the past several days. We are slowly going through the book of Psalms on what we also call the soundtrack for life. It is the collection of the songs of the people of God, the greatest hits is five psalm books worth from the time of Moses to the time of Malachi. And it is just a time when they are just processing their life with God through song, just like we do now. Like now, some of the top hits are people who are reflecting on culture, reflecting on their life. They're putting it in a song. And the book of Psalms teaches us how to relate to God. And in today's Psalm 15, David answers a big question because the very first line of it says, Who may worship you, Lord, in your sanctuary? Have you ever asked that question? closer to God. So if you're ready, Psalm 15, verse 1 says this Who may worship in your sanctuary, O Lord, and who may enter your presence on your holy hill? Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts, those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors, or speak evil of their friends, those who despise flagrant sinners and honor the faithful followers of the Lord, and keep their promises even when it hurts, those who lend money without charging interest, and those who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent, such people will stand firm forever. Wow.

Integrity, Truth, And Seeking First

Very straightforward and very to the point. It reminds me of something Jesus said in Matthew chapter six. He says, Seek first the kingdom of heaven, live righteously, and all these things will be added to you. He says, Later, you'll be like a tree planted by the water. And I love the idea that David says, be honest, be truthful in your words, be truthful in your actions, and you can draw close to God. Many times it's simple, but not simplistic on how to get close to God. You get close to God by honoring his word. I heard someone say one time, I think it was a Mark Twain quote, he said, It's not the parts of the Bible that I don't understand that bother me, it's the part that I do understand that bothers me. And in this one, he says, You want to get close to God? It's easy to know, it's hard to do. And that is watch your words, watch your actions, keep your integrity.

What Closeness To God Costs

I want to ask you this question today. Do you want to get closer to God? I think the answer for most of us would be, of course. My next question would be, what is it worth to you? Is it worth reorienting your life in any way necessary to conform to the word of God? Here's the great thing about God's word. God's word is all about our freedom. But sometimes, in order for us to have freedom, we have to do what seems counterintuitive to the world. Instead of trying to put ourselves first, we put others first. Instead of trying to get ahead at all cost, we let others go ahead and we count the cost. Instead of, you know, trying to step on other people, we let other people get a leg up. We we truly realize that our identity is in Christ, therefore I have nothing to prove and no one to impress. So I'm not, I am not striving, I'm running. I am not trying to get away from my past, I'm running toward my future. And he says, when you live like that, you better worship in the sanctuary of the Lord. What is it worth to you to get closer

to God? Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you see us and you know us, and that you're for us in all ways. I pray, God, that you help us to get closer to you day by day. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. Well, God's word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, say it with me. I will bless the Lord at all times.
