Psalm 17: Justice In A Broken World

Doing the right thing doesn’t always lead to an easy life and that can mess with your faith fast. Today we sit with Psalm 17, where David puts words to a feeling most of us know too well: “God, I’ve checked my heart, I’m trying to stay on the path, and yet everything is still going wrong.” If you’ve ever wanted to pray for justice without turning cynical, this is a powerful place to start.

Have you ever been in one of those moments when you realize that you, okay, listen, you don't get it right all the time. You got stuff, everyone's got stuff. We're working on it, all that. But man, this is one of those where I'm I'm kind of really on the right track right now. I'm doing good. I'm things are good, but stuff's still going wrong. So, God, we got to have a talk about that. I'm gonna need some help with what's going on. This one really isn't my fault. You ever felt like that before? Well, if you have, don't worry. Psalms As A Prayer Vocabulary

Well, if you've been with us over the past several days, we are walking through the soundtrack of the people of God. This is literally from the time of Moses all the way to the last prophet, right before the time of Jesus. This is a collection of the greatest hits of the people of God. These are songs that were collected. And this is actually five different song books that were collected of the people of God as they are learning how to relate to God. As we've said, the book of Psalms teaches us how to talk to God, how to hear back from God, how to grapple with the different things going on in our lives. And so there's songs about how to take road trips, there's songs about going into battle, there's songs of funeral and shouting and everything in between. And today is one of those that I think a lot of us can understand because there was a time when, you know, David, if you know his backstory, he was anointed king of Israel. But there was a problem. He was anointed king of Israel, and there was still another king alive. You know what I mean? Like the the throne was not available at the time. But David did not try to start a rebellion. He didn't do any of that. He went and served the king. His time was going to come, that whole thing. Well, the current king, his name was Saul, found out about David. And so he started pursuing David, tried to kill him, you know, tried to chase after him. And at some point on that, you know, in that season when David is running and hiding from King Saul, he writes down this prayer. And you can hear, as we're going to read this in a moment, where he's not doubting whether or not God can, but he's saying, God, I need you to pay attention to what I'm going through. And he's not saying that as though he doesn't think God can. It's just his way of saying, God, I'm going to need some help and I'm going to need it right now. I honestly feel like I'm doing everything I need to do, but it's not getting any better. And so if you've ever felt that way, God gets it. And instead of saying, shame on you, you should do better, he's actually given us a vocabulary on how we can properly pour out our heart to God when we just feel like we need some justice. read this together. Psalm 17, verse 1 says this, O Lord, hear my plea for justice. Listen to my cry for help. Pay attention to my prayer, for it comes from honest lips. Declare me innocent, for you see those who do right. You have tested my thoughts and examined my heart in the night. You have scrutinized me and found nothing wrong. I am determined not to sin in what I say. I have followed your commands, which keep me from following cruel and evil people. My steps have stayed on your path. I have not wavered from following you. I am praying to you because I know you will answer, O God. Bend down and listen as I pray. Show me your unfailing love in wonderful ways. By your mighty power you rescue those who seek refuge from their enemies. Guard me as you would guard your own eyes. Hide me in the shadow of your wings. Protect me from wicked people who attack me, from murderous people who surround me. They are without pity. Listen to their boasting. They track me down and surround me, watching for a chance to throw me to the ground. They are like hungry lions eager to tear me apart, like a young lion hiding in ambush. Arise, O Lord, stand against them and bring them to their knees. Rescue me from their wicked from the wicked with your sword. By the power of your hand, O Lord, destroy those who look for this world for their as their reward. But satisfy the hunger of your treasured ones. May their children have plenty, leaving an inheritance for their descendants. Because I am righteous, I will see you. When I awake, I will see you face to face and be satisfied.

The Problem Of Evil And Trust

Wow. I mean, David's going through it right now. He's saying, literally, God, I'm going to need you to protect me because bad people are doing bad things for bad reasons. And I didn't earn any of this. And I love the fact that instead of going to God and saying, God, why would you? How could you? I'm offended. Instead of that, he's going, God, you're the only one who can help. And that's one of the things that we have to be so careful not to do. As a pastor, one of the number one questions I get is about the problem of evil. If God is good, why is there evil? And we could have a whole, you know, long, you know, whole long conversation about how a good God giving us free choice of uh or freedom to choose means he has to allow the perversion of good, which is what evil is. Evil is not a creation, it's a perversion of what is good. And the only way that good can be allowed as a free choice is because there has to be a choice to do something bad with good, if that if that makes sense. So there's there's plenty of arguments that could be had for the problem of evil, but here's the challenge is when we see something bad, what we cannot let the do what we cannot let the devil do is we can't let him put into our mind that we need to run away from God. Like something bad is happening, I'm feeling difficult about something, I'm feeling hurt about something, I'm feeling broken about something. I should run away from God. Like we don't think like that, but that's what we do. If you think about it, let's say you have a a strong prayer time with God every day. You read your Bible every day. Well, what do you do when you get exhausted? What do you do when you get tired? What do you do when you get offended? You back away. You you just say, you know, I just don't have time for that today. The very thing that we need the most is the very thing that we push aside. And what David is doing is he's doing the exact opposite. When it's really getting difficult and it's really getting bad, he's leaning into God and he's saying, God, only you can do something about this. And can I tell you that's the most powerful thing we can learn from today is we tell others, we tell you counselors, we come tell our pastor, we do all these things, and there's nothing wrong with that, but there's only so much that those people can do. The only one who can truly do something about the difficult places in our life is God. But sometimes we go to Him last instead of first. Prayer should be our first response, not our last resort. And the book of Psalms teaches us how to relate to God. And so, how do we relate to God? Will we need justice in a broken world? We get honest with God and we tell him, God, I'm doing everything I know how to do, but it seems like evil people just be eviling. I'm gonna need some help. And you know what's great? God listens, God hears, and God does more than we can imagine. Let's

pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you are always doing more than we realize. I pray today, God, you will open our eyes to see just a little bit more of what you were doing, to give us the confidence and hope of knowing that help is not on the way. Help us here now, actively working in our situation. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. Well, God's word says, say it with me. I will bless the Lord at all times.
