Psalm 18: He's An On Time God

God feels late sometimes, and that feeling can mess with your faith if you don’t know what to do with it. Today we’re in Psalm 18, one of David’s longest praise songs, written after God rescues him from his enemies and from Saul. David doesn’t sanitize the story. He remembers the pressure, the fear, and the “deep waters” moments, then he names God as his strength, rock, fortress, shield, and safe place. Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 18. Today's title is He's an Own Time God. Yes, he is. I don't know if you know that old song, but there used to be an old song, and it was just that was the chorus. It was uh He's an on time God. Yes, he is. Oh, he's an on just over and over and over again. And the point would be that, man, I was having some trouble. I thought that God was gonna be late, but he was right on time. And that's what this Psalm is all about. This is a declaration of worship and praise because God has come through in the life of David. And so we're just gonna read this. It is one of the longest psalms in the entire book of Psalms, but it's all full of the goodness of God. And I think there's a great lesson for us in this. And so you get your Bibles out, get your Bible journals out, get your coffee out, man, get your streamers and get your party throwers out because that's what this is when it's all about

Psalms As Life’s Soundtrack

Well, if you've been with us over the past several days, we are talking about how the book of Psalms is our soundtrack of life because it is a collection. It's actually five books of a collection of the greatest hits, the greatest songs of the people of God, all the way from Moses to Malachi, the last book in the Old Testament. And these songs are what was inspired of the Holy Spirit that was the heartbeat of the nation as they were grappling with God over the course of generations, times when they were experiencing prosperity and wonderful things, and times when they were struggling, times when they were in exile, and times when they were, you know, conquering their enemies, just everything in between. And a lot of them, about 49%, almost 50% of the Psalms were written by King David, which is great because David had a very interesting life. He experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. And he would always do life with God, whether he was running from his enemies or he was celebrating great victories, he was always doing it with God. And that's what the book of Psalms does is it helps us learn how to relate to God. Well, today is one of those. This one actually, if you, depending on the Bible that you are reading, it actually says, as a title underneath Psalm 18, I'm just going to read it to you.

David’s Rescue Story Behind Psalm 18

It says, for the choir directors. In other words, he is saying, I want everybody to sing this. So he was telling the people in the tabernacle to sing this song. And it was a psalm of David, the servant of the Lord. And it says he sang this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul. And so he actually wrote this song and he sang it as a declaration of God delivering him from all the evil, all the things he'd been praying for for years, God did in a day. And so we're going to read this and just listen to David as he teaches us how to process your past through the lens of God's faithfulness. So here we

Reading Psalm 18

go. Psalm 18, verse 1 says this I love you, Lord. You are my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, my savior. My God is my rock in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me. He is my place of safety. I called on the Lord who is worthy of praise, and he saved me from my enemies. The ropes of death entangled me. Floods of destruction swept over me. The grave wrapped its ropes around me. Death laid a trap in my path. But in my distress, I cried out to the Lord. Yes, I prayed to my God for help, and he heard me from his sanctuary. My cry to him reached his ears. And then the earth quaked and trembled. The foundations of the mountains shook, and they quaked because of his anger. Smoke poured from his nostrils, and fierce flames leaped from his mouth. Glowing coals blazed forth from him. He opened the heavens and came down. Dark storm clouds were beneath his feet. Mounted on a mighty angelic being, he flew, soaring on wings of the wind. He shrouded himself in darkness, veiling his approach in dark rain clouds. Thick clouds shielded the brightness around him, and rained down hail and burning coals. The Lord thundered from heaven, the voice of the might most high resounded amid the hail of burning coals. He shot his arrows and scattered his enemies. Great bolts of lightning flashed, and they were confused. Then, at your command, O Lord, at the blast of your breath, the bottom of the sea could be seen. Foundations of the earth were laid bare. He reached down from heaven and rescued me. He drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and were too strong for me. They attacked me at a moment when I was in distress, but the Lord supported me. He led me to a safe place, and he rescued me because he delights in me. The Lord rewarded me for doing right. He restored me because of my innocence, for I have kept the ways of the Lord. I have not turned from my God to follow evil. I have followed all his regulations. I have never abandoned his decrees. I am blameless before God. I have kept myself from sin. The Lord rewarded me for doing right. He has seen my innocence. To the faithful you show yourself faithful. To those with integrity, you show integrity. To the pure, you show yourself pure. But to the crooked you show yourself shrewd. You rescue the humble, but you humiliate the proud. You light a lamp from me. The Lord my God lights up the darkness. In your strength I can crush an army. With my God I can scale any wall. God's ways, God's way is perfect. All the Lord's promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for perfection. For who is God except the Lord? But our God, who but our God is a solid rock. God arms me with strength. He makes my way perfect. He makes me as sure footed as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights. He trains my hands for battle and strengthens my arm to draw a bronze bow. You have given me your shield of victory. Your right hand supports me. You helped me, uh you helped made, excuse me, your help has made me great. I don't know why that was a mouthful, but there it was. You have made a wide path for my feet to keep them from slipping. I chased my enemies and caught them. I did not stop until they were conquered. I struck them down so they could not get up, and they fell beneath my feet. You have armed me with strength for the battle, and have subdued my enemies under my feet. You placed my foot on their necks, and I have destroyed all who hated me. They called for help, but no one came to their rescue. They have cried to the Lord, but he refused to answer. I ground them as fine as dust in the wind. I swept them into the gutter like dirt. You gave me victory over my accusers, and you appointed me as ruler over nations. People I don't even know serve me. As soon as they hear of me, they submit. Foreign nations cringe before me. They all loose their courage and come trembling from their strongholds. The Lord lives, praise to my rock. May the God of my salvation be exalted. He is the God who pays back those who harm me, and he subdues nations under me, and he rescues me from my enemies. You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies, and you save me from violent opponents. For this, O Lord, I will praise you among the nations. I will sing praises to your name. You give great victories to your king. You show unfailing love to your anointed, to David, and to all his descendants forever.

Reframing The Past Through God’s Faithfulness

David's having a good day. He is so excited. And you can you see how David frames his past now as he's looking back, and he's looking at and he he describes some of the battles and some of the difficulties he went through as storms and being um cast into the depths of the sea and all these other kinds of just images to talk about just how difficult it was at different times. And I don't know about you, but I can think about past situations in my life. And I don't remember necessarily people's names or specific conversations, but I remember the feelings I had during those times, the difficulties I had during those times. And that's what David is doing. He's saying, Man, that that just felt like I was walking through mud. That felt like I was just walking through a rainstorm over there and all of this. But then what I also love is how he realizes that God did all of that, and that God didn't just tell him, you just go sit over there, but God worked with him and helped him as he went along the journey. God was part of everything that he was going through. He was the one who was giving him the strength, the one who was teaching him resilience and all of this. And so now that he was there, he realized, God, you were there the whole time. The whole time, you were the one who was my strength. You were the one who was teaching my hands for battle. You you were the one bringing victory. And I think that the greatest thing that we can do is when we experience those moments of breakthrough, those moments when when things finally come together, and and don't worry, there are moments when things do come together. I promise you in Jesus' name. But when they do, I think it's so important that we take a moment like David did, and we make sure that we're thankful, not just for the end result, but for the journey. Because it wasn't just the end result that God was part of, God was part of the whole journey.

Gratitude Before The Finish Line

And here's the bigger challenge, and that is this, and maybe this is kind of the the point of of just kind of meditating today on this thought, and that is why wait? Why wait until you get to the end of your journey to thank God for the journey? But what if you took a moment and you said, you know, God, before I get to that victory, before I celebrate with that parade, I'm gonna go ahead and thank you now because the journey is not over. But if one day I'm gonna realize that you were here the whole time and that you were moving the whole time, why wait until then? But instead, why don't I open my eyes and just look and realize that you are here now. Even in this moment, I can celebrate you. I'm not where I want to be, but man, when I look, thank goodness I'm not where I used to be. And I'm gonna tell you, if we can learn how to do that, then we don't then we can experience the joy of victory, not when the victory is done, but when we are looking ahead and knowing that it's on its way. But I'm gonna go ahead and have a victory lap right now because God is an on-time God. That means he's always almost late, but he's always right on time. Let's

Prayer For Strength And Celebration

pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you're with us and you're for us. And Lord, I just pray for everybody who is listening or watching this podcast, Lord, that you will give them these days of these celebration moments. But even more, I pray that you will help all of us to open our eyes and to see that we don't have to wait till someday to celebrate you, but well, we can open our eyes right now and realize that you are with us even in this moment.
