Psalm 19: Amazed By God’s Greatness

The sky is doing more than looking pretty, it’s telling the truth about God. In Psalm 19, David looks up at the heavens, watches the steady path of the sun, and realizes creation is constantly declaring God’s glory. That sense of wonder is easy to lose when we’re busy, but it might be one of the simplest ways God wakes our hearts back up.

We walk through Psalm 19 and talk about what it means that nature “speaks without a sound” while still making God known. Then we follow David’s turn toward Scripture: God’s instructions revive the soul, bring joy to the heart, and give insight for daily living. Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 19. And today's title is Amazed by God's Greatness. Amazed by God's Greatness. I don't know if you've ever done this before, but you ever have one of those friends. They're just fun and they're just silly and just a lot of fun to be around. And then you discover that they have like a talent you didn't realize they had. I have this friend of mine that he was just always the life of the party. He always had a fun joke to tell or a story. Just great to be around, right? You just, when you found out he was going to be there, you just got excited. And one day, I was, I went over to his house for something and I looked over on his wall and I saw some of the most beautiful art I had ever seen. Just these paintings. It was just wonderful. And I said, man, listen, I'm not much of an art guy, but I am amazed at these paintings. Like, where did you get these? And he just was kind of shy. And he said, I did those. And he just said that he had always been interested in art and had been part of his family. And he just, it was a hobby of his. And I was blown away. I was like, man, you are so creative. Like, I don't mean this to be rude, but I'm shocked because you just never talked about it before. And he was like, well, there's some things that not everybody knows about me, that kind of thing. And I wonder how many times that happens to us when it comes to God. We think of God for salvation. We think of God in so many other ways. And that is absolutely wonderful. But there are other aspects of God that I wonder if they just kind of go right past us sometimes that would just cause us to pause and go, wow, God, you're even more than I thought you were. Well, David gets kind of wrapped up in that today, and we're going to talk about it. And I want to give you a challenge that I hope maybe you take by the end of our time

Psalms As A Soundtrack For Life

if you've been with us, we are just slowly walking through the book of Psalms, and we are calling it a soundtrack for life because it is the greatest hits of the people of God from Moses all the way to Malachi. And it is just the way that the nation of Israel just grappled with knowing God through the ups and downs of their life. And there's all kinds of psalms that talk about all kinds of things. And that's what these were. These were the greatest hits that were there that they would use throughout life, road trips, funerals, weddings, all these different things. And the book of Psalms teaches us how to relate to God. And that's why I love that David wrote almost half of them, is because the Bible said that David was a man after God's own heart. He was, he was seeking after God in all things, but not just God's hands, not just his miracles, but he wanted to know God. And so these psalms teach us how to know God. And I love this one because in this one, it's almost like David looks around and he's like, Well, God, I didn't know. I just, I guess I just didn't think about just how creative you are. And then it causes him to say, Man, God, I want to get this right. You are worthy of me getting to know you and getting to know you on purpose, right? And so I want us to read this and just see if we can be just kind of struck again at the glory of God. So you ready?

Psalm 19, verse 1 says this The heavens proclaim the glory of God, the skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak, night after night they make him known. They speak without a sound or word, their voice is never heard, yet their message has gone throughout the earth and their words to all the world. God has made a home in the heavens for the sun, it bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom after his wedding. It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race. The sun rises at one end of the heavens and follows its course to the other end. Nothing can hide from its heat. The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commandments of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living. Reverence for the Lord is pure, lasting forever. The laws of the Lord are true, each one is fair. They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, dripping from the comb. They are a warning to your servant, a great reward for those who obey them. How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. Keep your heart from deliberate sins. Don't let them control me. Then I will be free from guilt and innocent of great sin. And I love this. He says, May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. And so

Creation And Scripture Reveal God

what David does is he looks around him and he's like, Man, when I look at the stars in the sky, I'm amazed that you did it that way. When I look at the sunrise and the sunset, I get to see a masterpiece twice a day. And then when I look at the world around me, I just don't even know what to do with myself. Like that, that's really creative. And then I look to your word and I realize, well, that your word is perfect. That when I read your word, it breathes fresh life to my soul and it brings joy to my heart. It's it's true. It helps me to know what's right and wrong. And when I read your word, it helps me to know the world around me and to know you. And then he's almost like he's humble and he's saying, God, may the words of my mouth and may the thoughts of my heart be pleasing to you. And he's saying that because he's realizing, God, you are good. You are both great and you are wise, and you give me the chance to know you. Man, help me do a good job at this because you are worth knowing. And I wonder sometimes if we get so busy with the things and stuff of life that we pause or we don't pause to just be amazed at God's goodness. I'll

Learning Wonder From Our Kids

tell you one of the things that I loved about my girls when they were little. My my girls are almost grown now, but when they were, when they were little, I loved watching them discover life. Like it was just, it would make me feel bad, to be honest with you, almost on a daily basis, because they would be amazed at things that I was trying to rush them through because I was trying to, you know, do life. And I remember one time where my girls were were playing, and I was, I was, they were playing in the backyard and I was trying to hurry up and okay, we're gonna play for a little while and then we gotta go do this. And I was I was putting playtime on a schedule. You know what I mean? That does not work for anybody. And I remember that there wasn't really anything to do, and I wasn't really getting a lot of the toys out because we didn't have long. I mean, it was just having a, you know, just a just a unfocused day. And both of my girls, they got so just fascinated with with dandelions. And they were just, they would, they would, you know, kind of blow on them and then just watch them go and just just thought it was wonderful. And it kind of got me in a moment that I couldn't tell you the last time I looked at a dandelion as just a weed that needed to be cut down. But for them, it was beautiful. And it got me looking at it and going, do you know they are beautiful? I I hadn't thought about that in a long time. And and then, like, not long after that, it was fall time, and I wasn't really thinking about it. And I was trying to rake some leaves and be done with it. And before I knew it, I had to rake them all over again because my girls were playing with the leaves. And at first I got frustrated. And then after I thought about it, I was like, wait a minute. This is this is them discovering God's creation in life. I I not only do I need to not rush them through it, I need to pause and remember. It is amazing that God did it that way. And I wish I could tell you I did that every day. I didn't. But on the days when I would watch them just be in awe of leaves, of dandelions, of a rainbow in the sky. You know, these kinds of things, it would convict me, to be honest with you, because I would be so busy trying to make my life happen that I'd I didn't pause to think about the beauty that God had made to make that life beautiful. And I wonder how many times we rush through life and we don't pause to realize the beautiful creativity of God. Because think about it, God did not have to do it that way. In God's ultimate wisdom, he could have made it so that the sun gave light, but didn't give beauty. He could have made so that the stars did what they do, but they weren't recognizable by us. He has given us these things because not only does he want us to make it through life, but he wants us to make it through life with wonder and with joy and with excitement and with curiosity. So

Sunset Challenge And Closing Prayer

here's my here's my homework for you. And you know, you never can tell when people are listening to this and watching these. But if it is during the day and you have time, I would love to challenge you to watch the sunset tonight. To whatever time of year it is, the sun usually always sets every day. I'd love for you to watch the sunset. And instead of thinking about, well, let's get this over with, instead, think about the fact that God did not have to do that. He could have made it so that the sun set, but it didn't have to reflect off of the atmosphere and off of the clouds in such a way that it creates all of this beautiful colors. He didn't have to do it that way. He did it so that every day we could be reminded that there's still beauty in this life. If you were listening to this at night, I know we have some people who listen to this, they're in third shift. I would challenge you to see if you can stay awake long enough to watch the sunrise today and realize God did not have to do it that way. He did it for us so that we could see the glory, the wonderful, the wonder, and the beauty of his creation. And if God loves us that much, shouldn't it cause us to then go, God, I want to know you. So help me get this right. Let the words of my mouth, let the things that I focus my heart on, let them be pleasing to you because you are worth the effort. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you see us and you're for us. God, I am so sorry that so many times I don't see you. I don't see how you are moving and working in this life. I pray, God, give us wisdom and favor. Help us to open our eyes to see you more clearly and to see the creation that you have made. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. Well, God's word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, say it with me. I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. Each new day is a new reason to give God praise.
