Psalm 20: Praying For Victory

The moment before the hard thing is often harder than the hard thing itself. You can feel it coming: the big exam, the job interview, the tense conversation, the presentation, the funeral, even a joyful event that still carries pressure. We want to show up with courage, but we also want to know how to pray when the stakes feel real and the outcome feels uncertain. 

We open Psalm 20 and hear it the way Israel likely first heard it: a song sung on the morning of battle. David’s words are short, direct, and steady, asking God to answer in times of trouble, to protect, to strengthen, and to bring victory. Then the psalm draws a bright line between what we can do and what only God can do: some people trust chariots and horses, but we trust the name of the Lord. That is not a rejection of preparation. It is a reminder that preparation is a tool, not a savior.

Well, everybody, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 20, and today's title is Praying for Victory. Praying for Victory. You know, we've been talking about how these different songs throughout the book of Psalms are for all different kinds of reasons and for all different seasons of life. There's even Psalms about what to do just before entering into something hard, something difficult. And if you've ever been in a situation where you know a hard meeting is coming up or a difficult day is coming up, there's something that you it there's like it's on the schedule. It's like three days from now, two weeks from now, whatever. And as you get closer, how do I pray about this? You know, what do I do? Psalms As A Soundtrack For Life

find. Well, if you've been with us over the past now 20 chapters, we are reading through what we are calling a soundtrack for life because the book of Psalms is actually five different books. And it's a collection of the greatest hits, the songs of the nation of Israel, from the time of Moses to the time of Malachi. And it covers just as they are grappling with God throughout the different ebbs and flows of their nation, they are writing these different songs and teaching us how to grapple with God. That's one of the things I love about the book of Psalms is I think the book of Proverbs teaches us how to relate to people. The book of Psalms teaches us how to relate to God. And I don't know if you've ever been like this. Okay, I'm not going to put this on you, but I'll put this on me. I've been in a situation before where I knew something hard was coming up in like two weeks. And it's a situation where I'm really needing to pray for God to give me favor, give me wisdom. Like I need to do well on this, right? And so it's one thing to kind of pray as you're getting closer and all this kind of stuff. But what do you do that morning? How do you pray that morning? And that that's it, that's an important thing because at that point now it's it's all over, but but the doing, right? And that's what this psalm is all about. This psalm is also written by David, and it was most likely a song that was written right before going into battle. So I want you to get this mental picture of the nation of Israel, the battles of Israel be getting ready to fight, maybe the Philistines or something like that. And they are on their way to the battle. It's the morning of, they are lined up and they've already prayed to God, and now they're going to pray one more time through a song. This is the song they would sing right before going into battle. And I wonder if maybe there's something in here that will help us as we're getting ready to go into something difficult, that this song will help us realize how to focus our heart before the battle. You ready?

Reading Psalm 20 Before Battle

Here we go. Psalm chapter 20, verse 1 says this in times of trouble, may the Lord answer your cry. May the name of God of Jacob keep you safe from all harm. May he send you help from his sanctuary and strengthen you from Jerusalem. May he remember all your gifts and look favorably on all your burnt offerings. Interlude. In other words, may the band play. And then verse 4, may he grant your heart's desires and make all your plans succeed. May we shout for joy when we hear of your victory and raise a victory banner in the name of our God. May the Lord answer all your prayers. Now I know that the Lord rescues his anointed king, and he will answer him from his holy heaven, and rescue him with great power. Some nations boast in their chariots and horses, but we boast in the name of the Lord our God. Those nations will fall down and collapse, but we will rise and stand firm. Give victory to our King, O Lord, answer our cry for

Preparation Versus Trust In God

help. So here's the thing I love about this Psalm. It is short, it is sweet, and it is to the point. And I don't know if you heard this, he is saying, We have prayed, we have prepared, and we know that God is able. And so he said, some people, they they put all their hope in what they can do. They put all their hope in what they have prepared and all their hope in that. And and that they have, you know, David's army, he has chariots, he has horses like everybody else. So he's not saying don't prepare. He's just saying, I know that ultimately victory doesn't come from my preparation. Victory comes from God who uses my preparation. And so once again, he's saying, Man, we have prepared, we have planned, we have done our homework, we're ready. But ultimately, we know that God is on the throne and that our hope is in him. And so we're asking for victory, God, and here we go. And so that's really, I think, the best prayer that we can pray. And so you wake up on that day, and maybe today's that day. Maybe you're listening to this and and you're a student, and today's the big exam. Today's the end of the semester. Today's the day you're going to defend your dissertation. I don't know. Maybe you're here and you have a presentation at work, or you're going on a job interview, or it's a hard conversation with a friend or a loved one, maybe a spouse, maybe a child, a

Pray For Today Then Step Forward

mother, a father. Maybe the hard thing is a funeral. Maybe it's a celebration, but it's stressful, like a wedding. I don't know what it is. But whatever difficult thing is in front of you, God's word teaches us that the best prayer to pray beforehand is to say, okay, God, I'm asking you to listen to me. I've prayed, I've prepared, and I know that you can. I've done all my preparations, but I put my hope in you. I'm going to do everything I know to do, but my hope is in you. Let's do this. Let's roll. And if you do that, God will be with you, and God will give you the confidence that no matter what happens, He is with you either way. Give it a try. Thank you, God, that in this life we will have those moments, the moments of the deep breath before the jump. And it's many times it's in those moments that we need to be reminded one more time that you are our hope and that you are with us. I pray, God, that as we pray for victory today, we will realize that all of victory is already in your hands. And so we step in to all you have for us with confidence. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. Well, God's word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, say it with me. I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise will continually be in my mouth. Every new day is a new reason to give God praise.
