Psalm 23: The Shepherd Of Our Soul

Well, hello, everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm 23. Today's title is The Shepherd of Our Soul. The Shepherd of Our Soul. There are a few chapters or passages in the Bible that are just iconic. They just stand alone as some of the greatest scriptures in the entire Bible. And most people would say Psalm 23 is right there. I definitely would. This is my favorite Psalm out of all 150. And maybe we'll talk about in a moment why. And I want to give you a challenge on this one when we get to the other side of it. But let's get ready to read this. So we've got Psalm 23. Get your Bibles open, get your Bible journals out. Why Psalm 23 Matters

Well, if you've been with us for a while, we've been reading through the book of Psalms, and we're calling it a soundtrack for life because this is 150 of the greatest hits of the nation of Israel, all the way from the time of Moses till the time of Malachi. And I know 150 sounds like a lot of songs, and it is, but not when you consider the thousands of songs that would have been written between this time frame. But these 150 make it all the way to the top, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and help us learn how to relate to God. And Psalm 23 is one of those. And this was written by David, and it was written from the point of view of a shepherd. And I love this because David, he was a shepherd when he was as a kid growing up, and he understands the constant care and attention that a shepherd must have to watch over a flock of sheep. And he is now turning it and saying, God, this is how you treat us. And I was doing some research, and I think this is one of the reasons why I love this psalm so much, is some research that I read said that this was possibly written toward the end of David's life. He is, at this point, he has been anointed king. He joined Saul's army, then was chased by Saul, then came, then he became king over part of Israel, then came king over the rest of Israel, then had a family, and then one of his sons tried to, you know, assassinate him and take over his throne and did for a little while. And he comes back. I mean, just David has been through it, man. His life, there's a reason why there's so many movies and TV shows about David's life. Even if he wasn't, you know, just one of the greatest men to ever live, he had one of the most interesting lives that's ever been, right? Just constant ups and downs. But on the other side of all of this, this is how David sees that God has moved in his life. And so I want to read this, but from the point of view of thinking about now, as an old man, David is looking back over these huge successes, these horrible failures, being in battles and death and life and all this stuff. And throughout all of that, how would you think that he would relate to God? And this is how he says he

sees God. Psalm 23, verse 1, he says, Out of all the things I've experienced in life, this is what I have to say about God. And that is that you, God, this is what I got to say. 23 verse 1, the Lord is my shepherd. I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows. He leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil, my cup overflows with blessing. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever. I

David’s Life Reframed By God’s Care

mean, wow. There it is amazing when you think about the fact that if you ever been to a funeral and you look at, you know, the kind of the program that they will have there, where they will have the name of the person who has passed away and the family who has succeeded them and all that kind of stuff. And they will have most likely the 23rd Psalm. Because when you read it, it talks about how the Lord is my shepherd. He watches over me. And there's something just peaceful about that psalm. And if you think about it, when you are thinking about who's writing this, you would think when he's looking back over his life, he wouldn't write anything peaceful. He would talk about mountaintops and valleys and cliffs and and and horrible things and all this stuff. But when it's all over with, he says, God, when I look back over my life, I see you have been leading me. You led me through peaceful times. You led me through difficult times. You led me in times when I was surrounded by enemies. You led me at times when I needed to be led and I needed to be pursued. And you've led me through it all. And I realize that you're going to continue to lead me all the way through till I am with you in heaven. That's amazing. It's amazing when you think about his life, and he looks and he goes, Yeah, God was with me. He was with me in the caves, hiding from Saul. He was with me in the palaces, celebrating all of it. He was with me when I was bringing the Ark of the Covenant back to the city of Jerusalem. He was with me in the battle and nobody stood by me as I faced Goliath. God was with me. And I love the fact that he's saying, just because God is with me doesn't mean I don't walk through the darkest valley. I walk through the darkest valley, but I do it without fear. Because God is with me.

Your Challenge To Look Back

And here's my my challenge for you. I would love for you to take just a moment and look back over your life. And depending on how old you are, that may or may not take very long, right? But look back over your life and how would you reframe your life if you knew that God was with you? He was with you in the good moments, he was with you in the darkest moments. You never went through one of those moments alone. And the very fact that you made it means God was with you. And yeah, you've got some scars, you've got some wounds, you've got some places, you've got some stories to tell. But the thing is, God was with you through all of it. How would you reframe your life if you knew God was with you? Let's

Prayer For New Perspective

pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you are with us in the sunshine and in the rain. And the very fact that we made it is proof that you are with us. God, the enemy wants to take the things that happen to us and make it so that we only see the bad. And Lord, there are many things that there are bad, but your your word says that you can make all things new. In other words, you can take the darkest day and make something beautiful out of it. And Lord, sometimes that's something that we can't hardly get our minds around. But that's why we know that you're the God of miracles. It's because miracles are the very thing that you're good at. And we ask you, Lord, to help us to see our lives in the light of your goodness. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
