Psalm 26: Living Clean In A Dirty World

Dirt has a way of showing up even when you’re careful, and that’s not just true for white shoes. We’re talking about the daily struggle of trying to live for God while feeling surrounded by compromise, pressure, and the kind of mess that wears you down over time. White Shoes And Staying Clean

Today, Psalm 26, and today's title is Living Clean in a Dirty World. Living Clean in a Dirty World. I don't know if you've ever done this before, but uh not too long ago, I bought my first pair of white uh shoes. I had never really been one for white shoes because I can get almost anything dirty. And so I was very nervous about these shoes, but I got them. And I was walking through a front yard and I was being very, very careful not to get anything on these shoes. But I but as I was walking, I started to look around and notice even though nothing was touching the top of my shoes, somehow I was still collecting dirt. I was getting so angry because I was like, I'm putting out all this effort. Yet because there is dirt all around me, it's getting on my nice shoes. And I just had to realize I'm just gonna have to keep watch over these things. If I'm gonna keep them clean as long as possible, I'm gonna have to keep a watch on them. And that is what David is gonna talk about in this psalm today. I don't know about you, but I get so frustrated sometimes when I'm trying to live for God. I'm trying to do the right thing and I get it wrong, but then I try to get it right and I'm doing the best I can. But because we live in a world that is just dirty, that it has a way of getting on you. And it's like sometimes you say, God, can you just put me in a bubble somewhere? Because I'm trying to live for you, but it's not easy. And God says, No, I'm not gonna put you in a bubble because I sent you to reach this world around you, but I am gonna keep you through all those different things. Psalm 26 Read Aloud

the book of Psalms and we're calling it the soundtrack for life. And it is a collection of the greatest hits of the people of God all the way from the time of Moses to the time of Malachi, as they are learning how to relate to God. And this is another one of those chapters that I think is so powerful because I think that it is so accurate to real life. And David is likely writing this during a time of just political upheaval. Because here's the thing: David did a lot of work to get to be the king, but then he was king for a real long time. And being a king of a nation is hard. There's all these different things that's going on, there's always political stuff that's happening, and he's having to deal with just the this the nastiness of people that don't always love God. And even people who love God, but are not perfect. And it's just all of that kind of stuff. And so what David is doing is he is just saying, God, help me to live clean. Help me to stay clean in a dirty world. And I think that if you've ever been like me and you've just looked at the world around you and go, Man, I got enough issues to deal with. Can can we not add any more to this? It's almost like that's what David is kind of saying. So let's read this together and let's see how maybe God's word speaks to us about how to pray and ask God to help us live clean in a dirty world. Here we go. Psalm 26, verse 1 says this Declare me innocent, O Lord, for I have acted with integrity. I have trusted in the Lord without wavering. Put me on trial, Lord, and cross-examine me. Test my motives and my heart, for I am always aware of your unfailing love, for I have lived according to your truth. I do not spend time with liars or go along with hypocrites. I hate the gatherings of those who do evil, and I refuse to join in with the wicked. I wash my hands to declare my innocence. I come to your altar, O Lord, singing a song of thanksgiving and telling of all your wonders. I love your sanctuary, Lord, the place where your glorious presence dwells. Don't let me suffer the fate of sinners. Don't condemn me along with murderers. Their hands are dirty with evil schemes, and they constantly take bribes. But I am not like that. I live with integrity. So redeem me and show me mercy. Now I stand on solid ground, and I will publicly praise the Lord. So

Integrity Under Pressure

David, in this very short psalm, is just saying, Bad people around me are doing bad things, and God, I want you to know I'm not joining them. I want you to see me, Lord, that I'm not joining them. But help me stay clean from all this dirty stuff. And then at the end of it, he says, Okay, now I stand on solid ground and I'm gonna get back to business and publicly praise the Lord. So what he's doing is he is just reminding himself where his strength comes from, reminding himself that God is the one who is working with him. And then he says, Okay, back to it. And I think that is one of the things that this challenges us on is as we relate to God, it's okay to talk to God and say, God, I feel like right now I'm in a good place. I feel like that that I'm I'm I'm living for you and things are going well, but man, it's hard to live with all this mess around me. But the answer that God tells us is not to try to escape this world, but to get victory over this world and then plug back in again. Because when God saves us, the reason why he doesn't take us straight to heaven is because he wants us to grow in the kingdom of God and share the light of his kingdom with others. You know, Ephesians uh chapter three calls us his masterpiece, that he puts us on display for the world to see his goodness, not out of our greatness, but out of what God does through us. Well, that can't happen unless we are clean in a dirty world. That the very people that we're complaining about are the very people possibly that God has sent us into this world to be a witness to. And that can be so difficult sometimes.

Victory Then Plug Back In

And so God's word challenges us to reaffirm our love for Him, to pray for God to give us strength, and then to plug back in with faithfulness. Let's pray together

together right now. Father, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you lead us in all things. And sometimes, God, you lead us to live clean in a dirty world. Not because you want us to suffer, but because you want to send us to suffering people, people that need you. I pray, God, you'll give us the courage to live for you in a world that doesn't know you, and to live for you with our eyes wide open and our voices loud, proclaiming your goodness and all things. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Now God's Word says, say it with me in Psalm 34, verse 1. I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. I love you.
