Psalm 27: Confidence Over Chaos

Chaos has a way of stealing your courage. One bad phone call, one bill you didn’t expect, one more sleepless night, and suddenly you’re questioning everything you thought you believed. Psalm 27 meets us right there, and we walk through it line by line to find a confidence that doesn’t depend on everything going smoothly.

We talk about why it’s easy to feel strong when the outside world is “confirming your awesomeness,” and why it’s so hard to stay steady when life feels upside down. David doesn’t ignore danger or pretend fear isn’t real. I don't know about you, but it seems like it's easy to have confidence when everything's going well. You know what I mean? When it looks like everything on the outside is confirming your awesomeness. Everything is great. But what's hard to do is have confidence when there's chaos. How in the world do you still see the goodness of God when it looks like everything is falling apart? Well, if that's ever been you, then don't worry because God's word has got an antidote for that. And we're going to find out about it in just a second.

Psalms As A Soundtrack For Life

it comes to the book of Psalms. We decided to call the Psalms a soundtrack for life because the book of Psalms is actually a collection of five different books of songs that were written about the life of the people of God, all the way from Moses to Malachi, everything in between. We see God walking with his people through ups, through downs, through everything in between. And as the people of God are grappling with how to relate to God, how to do life with God, they wrote songs about it. And that's what we get. And we see that in our current culture. You know, we see people who write songs about, you know, love stories gone wrong or love stories gone right, you know, everything in between. And that's what they're doing as well. And these are the ones that the Holy Spirit inspired to say, this is how you learn how to do life with me. And so today is one of those that if you've ever been in a life or season of life when it just seems like everything is chaos. You know, if you start a new business and you are the only employee, right? So you're just doing all of it. Or a season when you have small children and it you're just trying to stay above water most days, right? Or you're going through school and you're trying to work a job as well. Just all the different things, uh grappling with overcoming loss or going through a divorce. There's just so many times in life when it seems like everything is upside down. What's important to do is to remember that our confidence does not come from what we do today, but it comes from what God has already done in the past. When we remember his faithfulness, we're able to remember that if God was with us before, God will be with us now. Confidence is based on what you've already learned in the past. And so we're going to read this together and read how David is obviously he's going through a time of danger. Something is not well. You know, he was a king during a time when kings would battle all the time. And so somebody's making some ruckus somewhere. And David is remembering that the reason why he can have confidence is because the Lord is with him. So let's read this together and see what God's word will teach us about how to relate to God when it seems like confidence is our chaos is everywhere. Here we go.

Reading Psalm 27 Aloud

Psalm 27 says this The Lord is my light and my salvation. So why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger. So why should I tremble? When evil people come to devour me, when my enemies and foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident. The one thing I ask of the Lord, the thing I seek most is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord's perfections and meditating in his temple. For he will conceal me when there is trouble when trouble comes. He will hide me in his sanctuary, he will place me out of reach on a high rock. Then I will hold my head high above all the enemies who surround me. At his sanctuary I will offer sacrifices and shouts of joy, singing and praising the Lord with music. Hear me as I pray, O Lord, be merciful and answer me. My heart has heard you say, Come and talk with me. And my heart responds, Lord, I am coming. Do not turn your back on me, do not reject your servant in anger. You have always been my helper. Don't leave me now, don't abandon me, O God of my salvation. Even if my father or mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close. Teach me how to live, O Lord, lead me along the right path, for my enemies are waiting for me. Do not let me fall into their hands, for they accuse me of things I've never done. With every breath they threaten me with violence. Yet I am confident I will see the Lord's goodness while I am here in the land of the living. So wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for

Remember Faithfulness Be Honest Now

the Lord. So what David is saying is, is he starts off with saying, Why should I be afraid? The Lord is with me. And he even says, Why should I tremble? Why should I let it just take me over? And then he goes in and he talks about how the Lord has been with him, the Lord has been good. But you know what I love is right there toward the end is he says, God, I know you've been with me. God, I know that my confidence doesn't come from who I am, but on what you have done. At the same time, life is chaotic right now. So I need you to be with me again. And so what God is giving us permission to do is to start with remembering his faithfulness. But then it's okay to be honest about the present. There's nothing wrong with saying, God, I don't like what is happening right now. I don't like the chaos of the moment. That doesn't mean I'm going anywhere. I trust you, but I'm asking you to do it one more time. Now, spoiler alert, he will. God is always faithful. But when we pray and we ask God to be with us again, it's not as much that God is, you know, we're we're not reminding God that he needs to be faithful again. It's us reminding ourselves that he will be. And so David is saying, God, you've been with me. God, I want to do life with you. God, I want to grow. Oh, by the way, this is really hard. Please be with me again. And then I'm gonna wait and watch what you're gonna do. And that's what God invites us to do.

Take Your Chaos To God

So today, you know, we we talked about how the book of Psalms teaches us how to relate to God, and the book of Proverbs that we'll get to next teaches us how to deal with people. Well, how do we deal with God when there's chaos? Have confidence in the Lord. Take your chaos to him. Remember that he has always been faithful. It's okay to pray and ask him to be faithful this time, and then wait and watch what God will do. One last thing before we pray.

God Walks With You Through Hard

Just because God is with you does not mean you will not go through hard times. Just because God is with you doesn't mean there's not going to be difficult moments. God does not save us from every difficult path. He walks through us, he walks with us through every single difficult path. Because there's some things we can only learn by walking through difficulty. How would we know about the greatness of God unless we needed a time for him to show his greatness? How would we know that God answers every prayer unless we had moments when we needed him to answer a prayer? Every great testimony begun begins with a great test. And so when chaos happens, that's when our confidence arises. Not because of the chaos, but because we know we serve a God who is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above everything we could ask, think, or imagine. Let's

Prayer For Confidence

pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, not for the chaos, but thank you for the confidence, even in the middle of chaos. Not in confidence in ourselves, not confidence in our abilities, but our confidence in you. That you give us the strength, you give us the ability to be able to do all the things that you've called us to do. Lord, I pray for maybe somebody who is listening or watching this right now who they're going through a season of just just chaos, just difficulty. I pray you'll open their eyes to see that all around them are evidences of your presence, evidences of your faithfulness, and that their confidence in you is well placed. Thank you, God, for always being more than enough for us. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
