Psalm 28: When Heaven Feels Silent

Well, everybody, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 28. And today's title is When Heaven Feels Silent. When Heaven Feels Silent. Or maybe, how about this? God, you don't have to answer my prayer, but can you just let me know you're listening? It's like you want to like get a ladder and kind of like hit the ceiling and go, I'm just making sure you're up there, God. You know, you ever have one of those days, you know, when you're feeling mistreated and you're like, God, you seeing? You see what these fools are doing? Or you you really need direction? Like there's a fork in the road and it's coming, but God doesn't seem to be in a hurry. Like, like, are you paying attention? Yeah, if you've ever been like that, don't worry. David has too. And the Holy Spirit inspired him to write out a prayer that we can still look at today for some wisdom on how to how to know how to relate to God when it feels like the heavens are silent. Psalms As The Soundtrack For Life

find. And right now we are digging into the Psalms. And we've been talking about this every day. My hope is by the time we're done with Psalm 50, or one 150, by the way, there's a bunch of them, that you'll have this part memorized. And that is that this is what we are calling the soundtrack for life. It is the songs collected by the people of God from the time of Moses all the way to the book of Malachi. So from Exodus to Malachi, these are the songs of the people of God as they are doing life with him through ups and downs. They even got songs for road trips, man. What do you sing when you're you're done counting all the cars and all this kind of stuff? It's songs for road trips. And it's just learning how to do life with God through the different seasons of life. And they wrote five different books of songs. And these are the ones that were, you know, the best ones that were collected that the Holy Spirit inspired. And this one is one when David is going through a season when it seems as though he's either asking for direction or he's feeling mistreated. And I don't know about you, but I have had seasons in my life when it just seems like I've got to make a decision. And I don't know. I I want to, I want God, you know, to have his way in my life. I want him to give me wisdom, but it just seems like no wisdom is coming. And there really isn't a sometimes, I'll be honest with you, sometimes there's been times when there is not a good decision. It's just which one is the least bad decision. You know what I mean? Then there's been other times when, you know, I've kind of I've kind of earned some of the trouble I've been going through, you know, but sometimes I didn't earn it. Like, hey, I was minding my own business and trouble found me. And I'm praying and asking God to do something, and it just seems like God's busy, you know. And so, like I was saying in the intro, I just want to go and like like hit the ceiling and say, You listening? You see these people, you know. Well, David obviously felt this way. And in spite of the Holy Spirit, he writes out a song about what he's going through and he teaches us what we need to do when the heavens feel silent. Psalm 28, verse 1 says this I pray to you, O Lord, my rock, do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you are silent, I might as well give up and die. You ever felt like that? Listen to my prayer for mercy as I cry out to you for help, as I lift my hands toward your holy sanctuary, do not drag me away with the wicked, with those who do evil, those who speak friendly words to their neighbors while planning evil in their hearts. Give them the punishment they so richly deserve. Measure it out of them in the proportion of their wickedness, pay them back for all their evil deeds, treat them or give them a taste of what they have done to others. They care nothing for what the Lord has done or for what his hands have made. And so he will tear them down, for they will never and they will never be rebuilt. But praise the Lord, for he has heard my cry for mercy. The Lord is my strength and my shield. I will trust in him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving. The Lord gives his people strength, he is set a safe fortress for his anointed king. Save your people, bless Israel, your special possession, lead them like a shepherd, and carry them in your arms forever. So

Pray Anyway And Trust Anyway

David is what he's dealing with here is he is saying, God, I'm praying to you, and I'm gonna need you to answer me. Because if you don't do something, if if you don't do something, I might as well give up now. So, in other words, he's he's saying in a in a very kind of provocative way, God, this is all about you. Like you're I'm I'm praying to you because I trust you and because I know you're the only one. And so, you know what he does is he says, God, I need you to help me with this, this difficult situation, these difficult people. I asking you to have justice on them, and I'm reminding myself to trust in you. And so what he's teaching us is that if you've ever been in that ceiling, uh, that that season when you feel like the you know the ceiling is as high as your prayer is getting, he's saying, do two things. Number one is pray. Pray and ask God for what you need. Even if you don't think God hears, how can he not? Right? He's God. That there's no way that God can't hear you because He's He He's omniscient, He knows all things, and He's omnipresent. He's in He's in all places, He's listening. Just because we don't hear Him doesn't mean He's not active. As a matter of fact, I've learned in my life that it's the moments I think God's not listening that it turns out He's usually doing His best work. You know, it was just me getting in my feels, you know, and not paying attention. But he says, do two things. Number one is pray anyway, because God's listening more than you realize. And then also thank Him that even if you don't hear Him, even if you don't feel Him, you know He's there. Can I tell you, that is a great recipe. Turns out God knows what He's talking about. That when we feel like the heavens are silent above us, we pray anyway and we trust Him. Because once again, just because God, just because you don't feel something has nothing to do with the truth of who God is. It's in the moments when we don't feel something that our faith grows, because our faith is now built on something we know, not on something we feel. There's nothing wrong with feelings. It's great to feel the presence of God and to feel joy and excitement, but feelings make horrible leaders. You know, it doesn't feel good when you decide, you know, you want to lose a couple pounds and so you decide to skip dessert. That doesn't feel good because that dessert looked really good. And so in the moment, if you live by your feelings, you would say, well, I ought to eat all the bad stuff. You know what I mean? But we know that the truth is, is it's time to skip it a couple of times, right? Well, if we lived feelings when it comes to our relationship with God, it'll mess us up as well. So we and we enjoy our feelings, but we live according to the truth of God's word. And God's word says he'll never leave us, he'll never forsake us, he is for us, he is in us, he is moving, and he's always doing more than we realize. So once again, when you feel like the heavens are silent, he says, do two things. Number one, pray anyway. And number two, trust him, because he's always doing more than we can imagine. Let's pray

together right now. Father, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you are with us in more ways than we can imagine. God, if if there's somebody listening or watching this and they're like me, there's been many times when I trusted you, but I wondered where you were. God, I pray that you'll teach us how to trust you, whether we feel you or not. Because our relationship with you is not based on an emotion, it's based on truth. And the truth is that you are real and that you are close. But Lord, if we're honest, well, we're gonna pray anyway. We open our eyes to see you, we open our heart to feel you. Will you open up our soul to trust in you more? We're thankful for you today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Anyway, we'll say it with me. Psalm 34, verse 1. I will bless the Lord at all times.
