Psalm 29: The Voice Of The Lord

Thunder over the sea. Lightning in the sky. Wind stripping the forest bare. Psalm 29 doesn’t treat these as background noise, it treats them as a megaphone for God’s greatness. We walk through David’s words line by line and sit with the repeated phrase that drives the whole psalm: “the voice of the Lord.” The goal isn’t to get spooky or mystical, it’s to get awake to what God is already revealing about Himself and to let worship rise out of that awareness. 

We also talk about the world David lived in, a polytheistic culture that spread power across many little gods. Psalm 29 draws a clear line in the sand: there is one true God, and He reigns over the sea, the storm, the wilderness, and every “domain” people try to separate. That truth matters for real life because what you believe about God’s rule shapes what you do with fear, pressure, and uncertainty. When we remember God is not competing for control, we find steadier ground for Christian faith and daily trust. 

Then we bring it home with a simple, practical exercise you can do today: find five things around you that display the greatness of God, name why they point to Him, and watch what happens to your perspective on the biggest trial you’re carrying. Psalm 29 And God’s Voice

Well, everybody, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 29, and today's title is The Voice of the Lord. The voice of the Lord. In this Psalm, David is going to say the voice of the Lord so many times that there's no way we couldn't title this. But at the same time, I think it is so important that we notice God speaking to us in so many different areas of life. The primary way God speaks to us is through his word. But we can also look at the world around us and see him moving, be aware of his presence in so many different ways. And David is going to describe all those different ways as the voice of the Lord because it's God speaking or revealing himself to us. And so we'll get all that in just a moment. Well, I don't know about you, but one of the things that I am learning about this with you as we're going through the book of Psalms is that David seems to be, you know, when he's writing these, he's going through different seasons of his life, and he's writing about how God is revealing himself to David during those seasons. And that's why one of the reasons we call this the soundtrack of life, the book of Psalms, is because God is showing us how to relate to him throughout the different seasons of life that we go through. And the book of Psalms is actually five books of Psalms, songs that are written from the time of Moses all the way to the time of Malachi. And there's all different kinds of things. And this one is David talking about the voice of God. And I love how in my mind, it's almost as if David is looking around and he's just going, you know, God speaks to us through his word, but he also reveals himself through the world around us. And I want to read this with you and notice how he sees the goodness of God and everything around him. And then we're going to end with maybe an exercise of what we can do

with this today. So if you're ready, Psalm chapter 29, verse 1 says this Honor the Lord, you heavenly beings. Honor the Lord for his glory and strength. Honor the Lord for his glory, for the glory of his name. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness. Here's the first time he says it. Verse 3. The voice of the Lord echoes above the sea. The God of glory thunders. The Lord thunders over the mighty sea. The voice of the Lord is powerful. The voice of the Lord is majestic. The voice of the Lord splits the mighty cedars. The Lord shatters the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon's mountains skip like a calf, and he makes Mount Hermon leap like a young wild ox. The voice of the Lord strikes with bolts of lightning. The voice of the Lord makes the barren wilderness quake. The Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord twists mighty oaks and strips the forest bare. In his temple everyone shouts, Glory! The Lord rules over the flood waters. The Lord reigns as king forever. The Lord gives his people strength, and the Lord blesses them with his peace.

One God Over Every Force

So what David is doing is he's looking around at his world and he's saying, Man, God is revealing himself as strong and powerful and over everything all around. And the reason why that's so awesome for David to realize, and then of course us as well, is David lived in a very polytheistic society. Poly meaning many, theistic meaning God, so many God society. And so in that world, all these other nations, they weren't atheists. They served gods, but many of them would serve multiple gods. They'd have a god over water, God over, you know, of thunder, a god over, you know, the animals, these different gods, and you had to do different things to serve these different gods. And that's just how they made it through life. And it was the nation of Israel that was the only nation around who said, No, all these other gods are not real. There is one God, and he is over every single thing. He is in control of it all. And that's what David is doing is he's actually looking at these other nations and he's saying, No, there's not a God over lightning, a God over the wilderness, and God over whatever. There's one God, and he is good, and he reigns over it all. And so when you look at all these things, you see one thing, but you know what I see? All of this shows me God's greatness. And I think that's a wonderful thing for us to do.

Seeing God In The Ordinary

Is many times we look at the world around us and we see different things. But what if we took a moment and say, how can I see the greatness of God in this thing? How can we see the greatness of God when we look at a sunset, when we see a sunrise, when we see a rain cloud, we watch the wind go through the trees. We we get used to these things, but all of these things show the greatness of God. And it reminds us that if God can make the sunrise, if he can make the sun set, if he can make the wind blow, if he can do all these different things, then he can take care of my little problems. They're big to me, but they're not big to him. And I think that's the point of this is David is reminding himself, and as he's singing this song, he's reminding everybody that you know how we relate to God is by remembering how big he is. Because when we remember that he created everything and holds the universe in the palm of his hand, he can take care of my problem because it is nothing

Five Things That Show God

compared to him. So here's kind of my homework for you today, and that is this that if you're in a place where you can do this right now, then that'd be the challenge. Do it right now. But if not, later. And that is look around and see if you can find five things that display the greatness of God. And then think about why. Why is it that it displays the greatness of God? And then when you do that, think about how much bigger God is than you can even imagine. And as you think about the greatness of God, see if that starts to change and bring into perspective whatever your biggest trial is right now. It's not, it's not going to take it away necessarily in the moment, but it's going to go, you know, God, if you, if you can make that mountain I'm looking at, if you sustain all of this, if I'm able to breathe in and out right now because of your greatness, then that mountain that I'm facing is not bigger than you. And watch what it will do for your faith and then your trust that God is doing more than you

realize. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you're with us and you're for us. God, I pray today you will open our eyes to see just a glimpse of how much bigger you are than we can imagine. And that as we see you speaking to us through all these other areas and we we hear your voice through studying your word, Lord, that it will challenge us to change our perspective, to see that you truly are more than enough for everything we need. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amy will say this with me. Psalm 34, verse 1 says, I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. I love you.
