Psalm 30: Joy Is On The Way

Wednesday afternoons can feel endless when you’re tired, discouraged, or just waiting for something to change. That’s the heartbeat of Psalm 30, and it’s why we titled today’s Bible Breakdown “Joy Is On The Way.” I walk through David’s words line by line, from the moment God rescues him to the moment he admits how shattered he felt when it seemed like God turned away for a season. If you’ve ever wondered how to hold onto faith in the dark night of the soul, this chapter gives you language that is honest and hopeful at the same time.

Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 30, and today's title is Joy is on the way. Joy is on the way. You ever had a moment that you were looking forward to in the future? Maybe it's something big and huge, like uh like a wedding day or something like that, or maybe it's something like vacation day, or maybe it's just waiting on Friday every single week. Well, whatever it is, it's that anticipation that can sometimes help you get through the difficulty of a Wednesday afternoon. You know what I mean? Because Friday is coming. Well, many times we can look at joy that way because we know that God is doing more than we can realize. And if we can just make it through this difficult season, something good is on the way. And we can see how David definitely grapples with that in this chapter. And so we're going to talk about that today. Psalms As A Soundtrack For Life

find. Well, as we've been going through the book of Psalms, we're, you know, it's Psalm 30. We got a long way to go, but we've been talking about how this is a soundtrack for life. Because the book of Psalms is actually five books of songs, the greatest hits, if we can say it like that, of the people of God. Because from the time of Moses to the time of Malachi, they are writing songs of their experiences with God, much like we still do today. So many of the most famous songs we have are people who are experiencing things in their life, you know, and they're writing it down. They say one of the most played songs in history is the song White Christmas, where someone's saying they're dreaming of a white Christmas. And then so many of us, when we listen to that song, it brings nostalgia back of, you know, it's an experiences that we had. So that's a lot like what these Psalms are, except the Holy Spirit inspired them to teach us how to relate to God. And this one's powerful because I don't know about you, but you know, using the illustration I said before, there's been times when, you know, I've got this one memory in mind. And that is my wife and I, we decided we were going to go on a vacation. And it was the first one that we'd ever been on without our kids since our kids had been born. We had not been on this vacation, uh, on a vacation. And we planned it way out. And I cannot tell you over the next few months as we were getting ready, I'd always think about that vacation that was coming. And I was like, man, if I can just make it, if I can just make it. And sometimes it would give me that extra little, you know, incentive to keep going. Because I knew that was on the way. Well, that is a very small example of how it is a lot of times when it comes to trusting in God. That there can be this, what we would call the dark night of the soul. But if we can just trust him, good things are on the way. And we can see David grappling with that. And eventually this song would become a song for the dedication of the temple. Because the people of God had thought for a long time about building the temple. And finally they got a chance to do it. And they're saying, Finally, we've been able to do this together. So let's read this and just kind of see if we can experience what it's like to have that

joy on the way. Here we go. Psalm chapter 30, verse 1 says this I will exalt you, Lord, for you rescued me. You refused to let my enemies triumph over me. O Lord my God, I cried to you for help and you restored my health. You brought me up out of the grave, O Lord. You kept me from falling into the pit of death. Sing to the Lord, all you godly ones. Praise his holy name, for his anger lasts only for a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime. Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning. When I was prosperous, I said, Nothing can stop me now. Your favor, O Lord, made me as secure as a mountain. Then you turned away from me, and I was shattered. And I cried out to you, O Lord, and I begged for the Lord, for the Lord's mercy, saying, What will I gain? What will you gain if I die? If I sink into the grave? Can my dust praise you? Can it tell of your faithfulness? Hear me, O Lord, and have mercy on me. Help me, O Lord. You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that I might sing praises to your name and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever.

From Weeping To Dancing

So David is talking about how there was a season when God rescued him and everything was good. And then he said, There was a time when I did bad and you turned away from me for a season, and I went through mourning again, but then you restored me again. And so he's talking about that cycle that we go through a lot of times because we go through good times and we go through bad times. And you know what's really hard to do is to remember one when we're in the other. Like, think about it. If if you're if you're on vacation, you're experiencing the vacation of a lifetime and everything is great and it's wonderful, in that moment, it just feels like everything is good. It's hard to remember the bad times because good is so good. But then the other time is when it's going bad. When you look at that clock and it feels like you've been working for 10 hours and it's only been two hours into the job that day, all you can think about is how bad it is. And so what David is doing is he is backing off of that a little bit. And he's going, you know what? As surely as bad times have come, joy has also come. Joy will be on the way again. And I think it's so important that we look at the goodness of God almost like that future date that we can expect. That yes, there will be dark nights of the soul, there will be difficult seasons, but just as surely as the sunset is also the sunrise, that joy always comes in the morning. And so I want to encourage you, if you are going through a sunshine season, everything is going well, then get ready because bad times will come. And that's not me trying to prophesy anything over your life. I'm just saying that's how life works. We live in a fallen world, fallen things happen to good people because we live in a fallen world. But as surely as difficult times come, here's the great news joy is on the way. Just as surely as there's a sunset, we all know there's also a sunrise. And so if you're in a sunset season in your life, if you're going through a dark season, the worst thing you can do when you're going through a storm is to put out an anchor. When you're going through a storm, the best thing to do is to keep going because on the way is the sunshine. And so we look forward to that because we know that God is faithful. And if he led you to it, he will also lead you through it all the way to the other side.

Prayer And Final Encouragement

Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you that you are with us and that you're for us. And thank you, God, that you never leave us in dark places, but you walk with us. You walk with us through every single season. Thank you, God, for loving us the way you do. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And amen. Well, God's Word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, say it with me. I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
