Psalm 31: When Life Seems Overwhelming

That split second when you realize you do not got this can feel like free fall. One day you are holding it together, and the next you are overwhelmed by pressure, fear, sadness, or just the sheer weight of responsibility. Psalm 31 gives language for that moment, and it gives a path forward that is both honest and steady. 

We read Psalm 31 and track David’s movement from panic to trust, from tears and distress to a settled decision: “You are my God… my future is in your hands.” We talk about what it means to stop carrying life alone, why God invites us to run to Him first, and how Scripture can anchor your prayer when your emotions are loud. Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 31, and today's title is When Life Seems Overwhelming. When Life Seems Overwhelming, have you ever had a moment when you thought you were going to be okay only to find out, well, you just getting started? You know, just things all of a sudden go from, okay, I'm I'm making it, I'm making it, to overwhelming. Well, we're going to talk about that today because today's psalm, a psalm by David, is talking about a season when obviously he is going through something difficult in his life and he just feels like he's slowly sinking below the water. And we're going to talk about how the Lord speaks to us through this psalm about what to do. Also, this psalm was quoted by Jesus when he was on the cross. A New Dad’s Overwhelmed Moment

if you've been with us, we've been going through the book of Psalms one song at a time, and we're calling it the Soundtrack for Life, because this is the greatest hits of the people of God. And the Holy Spirit inspired these five different books of songs that they they they were written for all different seasons of life, you know, early in life, late in life, morning, night, road trips, all kinds of stuff, how to do life with God in every season. And just like there's a whole lot of psalms about how to celebrate God when everything's going well, this is one about how to celebrate God, how to ask God for help when life seems overwhelming. And I was saying to you a minute ago, you ever have one of those moments when you feel like you're, you know, you're barely above water, but then all of a sudden you feel like you're starting to sink below water? You know, one of those for me was when we brought home our first daughter from the hospital. You know, when you you bring home that first, that first baby, if you ever had kids, there's such a mix of emotions, right? On one end, it's you're so proud. I mean, just what a wonderful moment. On the other hand, there's this idea of, okay, what are we doing again? You know, how's this gonna go? And we uh we brought our daughter home and everything was okay. And my wife is great with kids. So she she knew so much of what to do, and I knew nothing of what to do. And finally, after a few days, I was gonna stay home with our little girl while my wife went out for the very first time since having having the baby, or she hadn't been able to go out. And I think I called her two or three times while she was gone for just like an hour, you know, because I had no idea. And I felt so overwhelmed. And when Autumn finally got home and everything was okay now, you know, I remember thinking at one point, I was like, how are we gonna raise this poor child? You know, and I felt so overwhelmed. Up until then, I was like, okay, I think we got this. I think we got this. And then all of a sudden I realized we don't got this. We we do not have this. And I felt so overwhelmed in the moment. I don't know about you, but that's not just been in that situation, but in so many situations, we go from thinking we got our hands around something to we got no idea. Well, David definitely felt like this in this psalm. And the Lord uses him to teach us how to relate to God when we feel like life is overwhelming. So if you're ready, we're gonna read this together and see how the Lord will teach us how to relate to him when life seems overwhelming.

You ready? Here we go. Psalm 31, verse 1 says this, O Lord, I have come to you for protection. Don't let me be disgraced. Save me, for you do what is right. Turn your ear to listen to me and rescue me quickly. Be my rock of protection, a fortress where I will be safe, for you are my rock and my fortress. For the honor of your name lead me out of this danger. Pull me from the trap of my enemies set for me, for I find protection in you alone. I entrust my spirit into your hand, rescue me, Lord, for you are a faithful God. I hate those who worship worthless idols. I trust in the Lord. I will be glad and rejoice in your unfailing love, for you have seen my troubles, and you care about the anguish of my soul. You have not handed me over to my enemies, but have set me in a safe place. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in distress. Tears blur my eyes, my body and soul are withering away, I am dying from grief, my years are shortened by sadness. Sin has drained my strength, and I am wasting away from within. I am scorned by all my enemies and despised by my neighbors. Even my friends are afraid to come near me. When they see me on the street, they run the other way. I am ignored as if I were dead, as if I were a broken pot. I have heard the many rumors about me, and I am surrounded by terror. My enemies conspire against me, plotting to take my life. But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying you are my God, my future is in your hands. Rescue me from those who haunt who hunt me down relentlessly. Let your favor shine on your servant. In your unfailing love, rescue me. Don't let me be disgraced, O Lord, for I call out to you for help. Let the wicked be disgraced, let them lie silent in the grave, silence their lying lips, those proud and arrogant lips that curse the godly. How great is the goodness you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish it on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world. You hide them in the shelter of your presence, safe from those who conspire against them. You shelter them in your presence, far from accusing tongues. Praise the Lord, for he has shown me the wonders of his unfailing love. He kept me safe when the city was under attack. In panic I cried out, I am cut off from the Lord. But you heard my cry for mercy and answered my call for help. Love the Lord, all you godly ones, for the Lord protects those who are loyal to him, but he harshly punishes the arrogant. So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord.

Two Moves When Life Hits Hard

So really what God teaches us in this psalm is when life feels overwhelming, you know what he says to do? He says to do two things. And he expounds on them throughout the chapter. But in the very beginning, he says, I come to you, Lord. And then the second thing he says, be strong and courageous because you've put your hope in God. And so he says a whole lot of other stuff in there about dealing with people who kind of run away from him because they see the trouble he's in, you know, and so instead of trying to help him, they run off. But the bottom line is to do two things. When life seems overwhelming, number one, we do not try to carry it on our own. You know, God has no intention of us going through this life by ourselves. We're always supposed to turn to him, get him involved, and then turn to God's people. Not to carry the weight for us, but to walk with us as we go through what we're going through. And he says, come to come to God and then be strong and courageous because we have put our hope in him. If we put hope in ourselves, we know ourselves. We we know where our limits are and our weaknesses are, but when we put our hope in God, we can be strong and courageous. That God will be with us. So here's the here's the truth. In this life, God says we will have trouble. In this life, there will be moments when life seems overwhelming. So the first thing we do is we get God involved. God, I need your help. I need your strength. I need you to help me in this season. And then be strong. Look at those overwhelming circumstances and say, you may be overwhelming, but my God is stronger than you can imagine. And we put our hope in Him. And then take one step at a time and watch as we we honor God and we do what we know how to do. It's amazing how God always gives us the next step to take. Prayer And Final Encouragement

thank you so much for today. Thank you that you're with us and that you're for us. And God, if we're honest, I think all of us would say from time to time, life seems overwhelming for many different reasons. Sometimes it has to do with things that go on the outside, sometimes it's things that go on on the inside. But from time to time, life is difficult and life is hard. We want to do more, we want to help more, we want to, we want to see more than what we see. I pray, God, that first of all, we'll always get you involved. And then second of all, we'll be strong and courageous because you are our hope. Thank you for all you are doing in our lives. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Well, God's word says, say it with me.
