Psalm 32: The Joy Of Forgiveness

Guilt has a sound. It groans, it hides, it drains you slowly until even your strength feels like it evaporates. Psalm 32 gives that experience a name and then shows the way out: confession, repentance, and the joy of being forgiven by God. We slow down with David’s words and let them remind us that grace is not a small thing we graduate from, it’s the reason we can breathe again. 

We talk through the backstory that makes this psalm so powerful: David’s sin with Bathsheba, the tragic choices that followed, and the moment God confronted him through the prophet Nathan. David doesn’t celebrate what he did; he celebrates what God did. Psalm 32 And Joy Restored

Well, everybody, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 32, and today's title is The Joy of Forgiveness. The joy of forgiveness. I don't know about you, but I've been a Christian for a little while now. And so if I'm not careful, I can get used to the goodness of God. I can get used to the fact that God has forgiven me of all my sin. And so one of the things I love to do is I love to get around new Christians because they remind me that just like God has forgiven them, God has forgiven me. And it is a joy to be forgiven by God. And today's scripture, we're going to look at how David, he had done some pretty bad stuff. And when God confronted him through a prophet named Nathan, and then eventually he repents and is forgiven, man, the joy of that forgiveness just overwhelms him. And we're going to have a challenge today about when is the last time you've just sat and thought about the fact that God has forgiven you. That no matter what you've done, no matter what you've done to somebody, if you've repented, then forgiveness is yours. And it's a powerful thing. So we're going to talk about that today. Well, if you've been with us over the past several days, we are going through the book of Psalms, and it is what we're calling the soundtrack for life. And what it is, is a collection of the greatest hits of the people of God, from Moses to Malachi and everything in between. It is as they were doing life with God. They were writing songs about it. This is what it is to relate to God and this situation or that situation. And they eventually wrote them down into these five books of Psalms. And it teaches us today how to relate to God throughout the different seasons of life. And today's is about what to do on the other side of forgiveness.

David And Bathsheba’s Fallout

Now, if you don't know the story, David had become king. Things are going great. And one day, the Bible said that just without going too far into it, he had an affair. I mean, the only perfect person in the Bible is Jesus. And so we love David. And one of the things we love about David is David's human, you know, and he had to go through a whole lot of forgiveness. And so he ended up, and it got worse, actually. He he had an affair on his wife. And then he had an affair on his wife with one of his soldiers' wives. And the soldier was out fighting for David. So it was even worse, right? Well, problem is he had this affair, and this lady, her name is Bathsheba, she gets pregnant. And so now he's got another problem. And so he calls the soldier back in and said, Hey man, you should just go celebrate being at home with your wife, you know? Yay. You know, but the soldier says, No, I'm not going to go home and see my wife, and all of my friends and fellow soldiers are on the battlefield right now. And there's some scholars who say that he may have said that in such a way to say, you know, you should be there too, David, you know. And so when he realizes that his soldier, who he has cheated, you know, he has had an affair here with this guy's wife, he says, Well, okay, fine, cool. And he sends him back to the battle. And another long story short, he tells the general, basically, I want you to put him on the front line so he gets killed. And he did. And he got killed. And so then David marries his mistress and tries to make it all okay, even though it's not okay. And one day, a prophet comes in and basically tells him this parable. And at the end of the parable was, You done some bad stuff, David. And when David realizes you had an affair, you had a guy killed, you done some bad stuff, instead of just turning away from God like King Saul before him did, he's he repents before the Lord. And then God forgives him. And he is so thankful for God's forgiveness that he writes a song about it. And so we're going to read this song together and just take a moment and realize David is not celebrating his sin. He is celebrating God's forgiveness. And so let's read this together and see how God's word

Reading Psalm 32 Together

will teach us today. Psalm 32, verse 1 says this Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight. Yes, what joy for those who record the Lord, whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty. When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Day and night, your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Interlude, which means let the band play. So he he finished off with summer heat and said, Let the band play. And so they play, they play, they play, and he comes back. It's almost like you ever watched, ever watched a uh, you know, a famous singer, they they stop, let the band play, and he steps back up to the microphone. So that's kind of what David's doing. He steps back up to the microphone and he says, Finally, I confess my sin to you and stop trying to hide my guilt. I may, I said to myself, I will confess my rebellion to the Lord, and you forgave me. All my guilt is gone. Interlude, which means let the band play. So the the band does a little turnaround and he comes back and he says, Therefore, let all the godly pray to you while there is still time, that they may not drown in the flood waters of judgment. For you are my hiding place. You protect me from trouble, you surround me with songs of victory. Once again, let the band play. So there's plenty of plenty of shouting time in this, because once again, his sins have been forgiven. Here go, verse 8. The Lord says, I will give you a long, I will, I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. Do not be like a senseless horse or a mule that needs a bit or a bridle to keep it under control. Many sorrows come to the wicked, but unfailing love surrounds those who trust the Lord. So rejoice in the Lord and be glad, all you who obey him, shout for joy, all whose all you whose hearts are pure.

Why Confession Brings Relief

So David, David's excited, and why not, right? He had sinned against the Lord, things were bad, and then the Lord forgave him. One of my favorite stories is a gentleman that I knew when I was when I was younger, and he was in his forties when he gave his life to Jesus. And he been he went to church pretty much all of his life, and he just he just didn't give his life to the Lord. And one day he said, You know what? I'm gonna surrender my life to Jesus, and he gave his life to the Lord, and it was amazing because his testimony became if I had have known it was like this, I would have got saved a long time ago. Because one of the things we think of when we think about repenting of our sin is we think about it being painful on the other side, and that it's being hard on the other side. And we've already done the hard part, which is the sin and the guilt and the conviction. But when we give our lives to Jesus, that's when the peace and the joy comes. That it's for joy that the Lord endured the cross, so that then he could bring joy to all of us. And so one of the worst lies the enemy tells us when we don't know the Lord is you can't come to the Lord. I'm ashamed, I'm afraid, I'm full of guilt and shame. Well, that's as worse as it gets. That's as bad as it gets. Because when you come to the Lord, that's when he takes it all away. And so here's my challenge for you. If you have been a Christian, no matter for a day or for a long time, I want you to take a moment and I want you to think about the day you gave your life to Jesus. I want you to think about that moment beforehand. Maybe it was sitting in church or maybe it was with a friend somewhere, maybe it was all by yourself in your bed one night, whatever it was, and you think about that moment before you gave your life to Christ. There was worry, it was fear, there was anguish, there was uncertainty, there was all those feelings. But at the same time, you were awakened to the idea and the reality that Jesus loved you. And you said, you know what? In your own way, you said, God, if you want me, you can have me. I'm not much to look at. I got sin, I got difficulty, I've sinned against you, but if you want me, you can have me. And remember the moment when Jesus washed away all your sin. What an amazing thing. We couldn't wash away our own sins. The wages of sin, the penalty for sin was going to be death. But

Remember Your Salvation Moment

Jesus died to take our place and he rose again to give us life forevermore. What if for just a moment, instead of focusing on your to-do list and your schedules and your problems and your issues and all that kind of stuff, and all those things are there and they're important and we need to give those to God, what if for a moment we remembered that none of those things can take away the fact that you saved, that God is for you and not against you, and that salvation does three things. It saves us from our past, it saves us for the future in heaven one day, and it saves us in the present. In other words, he cleanses us every day and he walks with us toward freedom. What a beautiful thing it is to be forgiven.

right now. God, thank you so much for your salvation. Thank you for your forgiveness. Forgiveness is joy, and joy is not a feeling, joy is a settled knowing that what you said is true. I pray, Lord, that your forgiveness will just awaken fresh and new in our hearts today. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And we'll say it with me. Psalm 34, verse 1. I will bless the Lord at all times.
