Psalm 36: God Will Take Care Of You

Evil can feel coordinated. Goodness can feel delayed. And when you’re stuck in that gap, it’s easy to believe your situation is a 50-50 shot. Today we open Psalm 36 with Pastor Brandon and tell the truth about what David sees: sin whispers, pride blinds, deceit spreads, and wickedness can look like it has momentum.

Then the whole chapter pivots on two words that change everything: “But God.” David lifts our eyes from the patterns of evil to the character of God, describing unfailing love as wide as the heavens, faithfulness beyond the clouds, righteousness like mighty mountains, and justice as deep as the sea. We talk about why those images matter when you’re dealing with anxiety, conflict, grief, or uncertainty, and why the safest place in a shaken world is still “the shadow of your wings.”

We also get painfully practical about timing. Praising God after he comes through is easy. Trusting him right before he comes through can be the hardest moment of faith. We’ll walk through a simple application: name the number one issue you’re worried about, then ask how you would face it if you absolutely knew God was going to come through. This Psalm has is David looking at evil and looking at goodness and realizing that sometimes it looks like you're not really sure who's going to win in the end, right? But the reality is, is we don't we don't have to be sure. We can be confident that God is always faithful. And so even though it looks like it's a pretty even match, it's not. God's always faithful. Psalms As A Soundtrack For Life

Well, if you've been with us over the past, you know, 36 days now, even going through this. We are going through the book of Psalms one chapter at a time, and we're calling it the Soundtrack for Life. Because it is the greatest hits collection of the best songs that the Holy Spirit inspired of the people of God from the time of Moses all the way to the time of Malachi. And they're all about teaching us how to relate to God in the various different seasons and situations of life. We've been talking about how there's songs for road trips, there's songs about how to praise the Lord in the morning and how to praise God at night, how to deal with death and difficulty, how to deal with success and good things. And it's just everything in between. And today, it's almost as if David is kind of sitting back and he's reflecting on the good and the evil in life and how sometimes it's not always so certain who has the upper hand until you sit back and you go, oh, well, God was in control the whole time. You know, I know in times in my life I've looked, I've looked in the moment and I thought, you know, I don't know how this is gonna go. I I've got a plan and I think it's the direction the Lord wants us to go, but man, that's about a 50-50 shot. You know what I mean? It's only when you look back and you go, oh no, it wasn't 50-50. God was in control the whole time. And that's what it seems as though David is doing is he's he's remembering both at the same time that there is evil in this world, but man, God's also good. And when he looks at both, he remembers that God is faithful. And that can be very helpful for us to realize when we're not always so certain, God's gonna take care of us. So let's read this together and let's see what God's Word has

Reading Psalm 36

to say. Chapter 36, verse 1 says, Sin whispers to the wicked deep within their hearts. They have no fear of God at all. And they're blind conceit. They cannot see how wicked they really are. Everything they say is crooked and deceitful. They refuse to act wisely or good. They lie awake at night hatching sinful plots. Their actions are never good. They make no attempt to turn from evil. Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens. Your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the ocean depths. You care for people and animals alike, O Lord. How precious is your unfailing love, O God. All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings. You feed them from the abundance of your own house, letting them drink from your rivers of delights. For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see. Pour out your unfailing love on those who love you. Give justice to those with honest hearts. Don't let the proud trample me, or the wicked push me around. Look, those who do evil have fallen, they are thrown down never to rise again. So

Evil Is Real But God

David takes just a moment and he says, You know, evil, bad people do bad things for bad reasons. That's not good. But God. If we could have given another title, that's what we would have said. But God. Bad things are in the world. We live in a fallen world, but God is faithful and God will take care of me and you. And you know what's really, really easy? It's really easy right after God comes through for us to look back and go, look at God. Look at how good God is. God was always going to do this. That's great, of course. You know what's the hardest sometimes? Is right before God comes through. Because you're looking around and you're going, God is He's almost late. You know, it's anytime now, it really is getting down to zero, you know, anytime, God. And you know what's so hard to remember in that moment? Is the last 99 times that God was faithful. And we think, well, this time's different. And it's really not, but we think it is. And because we all we see in the moment is the evil things that are happening around us. But David reminds us that over and over and over, God is good. And so, how does this affect us today?

Reframing Worry With Faith

Well, here's how we can apply it today. I want you to think about the number one issue you're worried about. It could be anything, it could be something with your kids, with your job, with your parents, with school, with a friend, the lack of something in your life, dealing with grief or just conflict, just whatever it is. And think about how big it may seem right now. And think how would how would you think about it if you absolutely knew God was gonna come through? What would you do with that? Would you worry about it as much? Or would you take a moment and celebrate God's goodness? Because here's the truth God is faithful. Now I don't know how God's gonna come through. I have no idea what God is going to do, and I have no idea how much pain it's gonna take to get to the other side of that. But I do know he's faithful. And that's what David is challenging all of us. He's he's saying, yes, there's evil in the world, but God is also good, and God will take care of you. And so I encourage you to look at whatever challenge that is in your life, but frame it as then, but what would I do with it if I knew God was going to take care of me and

see what happens? Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you're with us and you're for us. Thank you, God, that yes, there are troubles and there's difficulties in our life, but there's also you, and you are more faithful than we can imagine.
