Your soul can get thirsty without you noticing at first. One day you’re fine, the next day everything feels dull, prayer feels hard, and even good things don’t satisfy. We open Psalm 42 and sit with one of the most relatable lines in all of Scripture: “As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God.” If you’ve ever asked, “Why am I discouraged?” or “Why does God feel far away?”, you’re not alone and you’re not crazy.

We also unpack the story behind the psalm. Psalm 42 kicks off Book Two and comes from the sons of Korah, temple musicians writing from a place of loss and distance. Their words carry the ache of exile, the memory of joyful worship, and the sting of taunts like “Where is your God?” That context reshapes how we think about spiritual dryness and Christian encouragement: sometimes the problem is sin and we need to repent, but sometimes it’s distraction, difficulty, or grief that slowly pulls us from the water source.

Then we get practical. We talk through simple ways to draw close again: asking God to reveal what’s creating distance, changing your environment for daily time with God, and using practices like fasting, giving, and serving to reset your attention and hunger. Above all, Psalm 42 gives a repeatable choice when emotions run low: “I will put my hope in God. I will praise him again.” If you’re ready for a steady, Scripture-based reset, press play.

Psalm 42 And A Dry Soul

SPEAKER_01

Well, everybody, welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 42. And today's title is When Your Soul Feels Dry. When Your Soul Feels Dry. I don't know if you've ever done this before, but I remember one time we took our girls to a theme park. And when we were going on this theme park, it was one of those days that was entirely too hot. You know, it was like August, you know, when you shouldn't be doing such things. But we did, and we took them on this all-day theme park ride. And somehow or another, we got out there and it had just been forever since I had drank anything. And it got to a point where I was just so thirsty that it just gave me a headache. I just felt weak. I just was just achy all over, which made me ill, all this kind of stuff. And it was amazing that when I finally stopped and got something to drink, drank some water, how it didn't just make my thirst go away. It just like made my eyes open better. It just took some of the aches away. It's just amazing. And it is amazing also that when our soul gets dry, it seems like everything else in our life loses flavor. Everything else in our life loses excitement. But man, when our soul becomes satisfied

Why Dryness Drains Everything Else

in the Lord again, it's like everything else just wakes up again. And so if you're in that place, or if you've ever been in that place, when your soul just feels dry, today's scripture is all about how to bring that to God and what he will do. So if you have your Bibles and open up with me to Psalm chapter 42, make sure also you take just a moment, like, share, subscribe to the YouTube channel and the podcast. Sons Of Korah And Exile Context

SPEAKER_01

we find. Well, if you've been with us over the past several days, we have been going through this book called the Book of Psalms. But it's actually five books of the collection of the greatest songs of the people of God. From the time of Moses all the way to the time of Malachi, these songs helped them relate to God, know how to do life with God through all different seasons of life. And today's chapter, chapter 42, is the beginning of book two. It's going to cover Psalm 42 through Psalm 72. And here's one of the really cool things about this. In this one, a lot of these songs were not written by David. They were written by some different ones, but one of the groups of people was this group of people called the sons of Korah. Today is written by the sons of Korah, the descendants of Korah. And here's kind of the backstory behind this. So if you look back in the Torah, the first five books of Moses, there was a time when a guy named Korah, who was a Levite, actually stood up and opposed Moses. It was a pretty big deal, and it would turn out to be really bad. You know, he he died in a pretty bad way and all this kind of stuff because he was in a spirit of rebellion. But not all of his descendants died. And his descendants, these Levites, became eventually the temple musicians and the temple singers. And so a lot of the times when you see, you know, when it would have a song of David, you know, written to the choir director or whatever, many times those choir directors with different ones, they would be from the sons of Korah. And so you have these psalms that are written by the sons of Korah. And what it means is it was a collaboration by these different musicians and psalmists. So nowadays you'll have these different, you know, Christian record labels, whatever. And if you ever look at the authors of some of these songs, you'll see like it looks like 50 names on there. It was because it was in a collaboration, and somebody would say, Hey, let's change this line here. Hey, let's do that over there. And before you know it, you got a full song. Well, that's what a lot of these would be. And these were written later in the nation of Israel's history. This one was actually written after the destruction of the temple and when the Babylonians came in. And so this is a song of just feeling spiritually dry because the sons of Korah at this time, they're in exile and they're remembering the presence of God and the temple of God back in Jerusalem, but they're not there anymore. And so they are just longing for the richness of God's presence again. And so let's read this together and just have this in our mind of they're just longing to be back in the presence of God. And

Reading Psalm 42 Aloud

SPEAKER_01

let's read this. Psalm 42, verse 1 says this As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God. I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before Him? Day and night, I have only tears for food. While my enemies continually taunt me, Where is your God? Where is this God of yours? My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be. I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sounds of great celebration. Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God, I will praise him again, my Savior and my God. But now I am deeply discouraged, but I will remember you. Even from distant Mount Hermon, the source of the Jordan, from the land of Mount Mizar, I will I hear the tumult of the raging seas, as your waves and surging tides sweep over me. But each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I will sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life. O God, my rock, I cry. Why have you forgotten me? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies? Their taunts break my bones. They scoff. Where is this God of yours? Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God. I will praise him again, my Savior and my God.

Why Your Soul Feels Dry

SPEAKER_01

Wow. I don't know about you, but I have gone through difficult seasons of just dryness in my life. And here's something that's very important to remember when you're trying to, when you're going through a season like this, many times we will try to diagnose while we are going through seasons of of dryness on the inside. And we have to be careful because it's not always the same thing. Sometimes the reason why we are experiencing seasons of dryness is because we've walked we've walked away from the water source. In other words, there's sin in our life, and we have kind of fled from the presence of God. We're way over here somewhere, you know, and we're in the middle of sin. And so we need to run back to God and repent. Other times we've walked away from the water source, not because of sin, but because of distraction, discouragement, and difficulty. And we've walked away from reading God's word every day and praying and talking to God and being around other Christian believers and listening to the things of God and all this kind of stuff. I know I've noticed in my life that if I feel my life full of good things, but not God things, it can still lead me to dryness. And you can tell the difference because when you, when you get the God things in your life, you can just feel that gentle rain on your soul. I mean, there's seasons for that. And then there's seasons when it's almost as if God will set a little bit of distance so that we will come after him closer because he's wanting us to get deeper in his presence. And so it's it's almost as if he steps away just a little so that we will step closer just a little. So you don't always know. And so I would encourage you that if you're going through a season of dryness right now, don't automatically think that you're in sin. You might be. And the way to fix that is you go before the Lord and you say, God, is there anything in my life that is creating distance between me and you? And just wait and see. Say, Holy Spirit, will you reveal it to me? And wait and see. God loves you enough that if you ask him, he will tell you. And then you'll have to do something about it. But many times, just the very fact of connecting with God like that already helps that dryness. But if you do that and nothing comes to your mind, then say, okay, God, is there anything in my life I'm not doing that has caused me to walk away from you? And then give it a moment and see if the Holy Spirit brings something to your mind. And then if nothing happens, then the next step is draw

How To Draw Close And Hope

SPEAKER_01

closer. There's so many ways you can draw closer. Number one is if you have a current daily time with God, change the environment. Go do it somewhere else to add some freshness to it. Fasting will help you draw closer to God. Giving will help you draw closer to God because it puts more of you and an act of sacrifice into something else, serving somebody, because you're never closer to the heart of God than when you serve somebody else. All these things are getting out of your normal routine, drawing closer to God. But here's the number one thing the sons of Korah told us, what do I do when I'm discouraged and my heart is sad? I will put my hope in God. I will praise him again, because he is my savior and my God. Put your hope in God. Turn to him, and God will bring his reign back on your soul.

Prayer Praise And Closing Charge

SPEAKER_01

Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you are with us in more ways than we can imagine. And Lord, even when we walk away from you, you're never far away. Even when we come close to you, you're not far away. You're always closer than we can imagine, and you are for us more than we can imagine. Help us find you again in all things. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Psalm 34, verse 1. Say it with me. It says, I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. Every new day is a new opportunity to give God praise. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Psalm chapter forty-three.
