Psalm 50: God Knows The Real Ones

You can look “spiritual” and still be far from God, and you can be doing unseen work with a sincere heart and be fully worshiping. That tension is why Psalm 50 hits so hard. We talk through a real-life moment where worship was mistaken for performance, then use it as a bridge into what God actually values when He evaluates our lives.

Psalm 50 reads like a courtroom scene: God summons humanity, calls creation to witness, and makes it clear He is not impressed by outward sacrifice alone. When Worship Looks Like Performance

Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 50, and today's title is God Knows the Real Ones. God Knows the Real Ones. I had somebody one time come up to me and tell me that they were really struggling with their relationship with God because of me. Well, I don't know about you, but that kind of ruins your day, right? And I was like, oh my goodness, what have I done to ruin or to really help you or make you struggle with your relationship with God? And they said, well, when I see you on Sunday and I see you worship, I see you worship, and then I will see you turn around and talk to our administrator about something. And then I'll see you worship again. Well, I don't understand because that looks like just a performance for me. And I said, okay, I get what you're saying, but at the same time, do you know my heart when I'm doing that? No. Do you know why I'm talking to that administrator? No. Literally, do you know anything other than what you can see with your eyes? Okay, no. Okay, exactly. Well, you don't know is when I come to church on Sunday, I'm not coming to receive from God. I'm I'm here to give to God my worship. Also, as a pastor, I am here to oversee the flock of the people. And so to me, worship is with my hands raised. Worship is when I am watching over the people. Worship is when I'm telling my administrator that there's a disturbance over there when you get security. That to me, all of that is an act of worship. And I told him, I said, if you could see my heart, you would see that every single thing I'm doing on Sunday in my eyes is an act of worship. And they're like, Oh, I never really thought about it that way. Well, yeah, you wouldn't because you you never asked, but you asked this. That's a good thing. And I wasn't at all offended by this person. And I don't know about you, but I do the same thing. I will look at people's lives or I will see what they do, and I just automatically assume that I know. And most of the time I don't. Well, if you've ever wondered, are they real? Psalms As The Soundtrack Of Life

Well, that is definitely true when it comes to the book of Psalms. We're calling it the soundtrack of life because it is the psalm book. It is the songs of the people of God all the way from the time of Moses to the time of Malachi. And many times you will hear these songs in modern churches today. We're still singing about the goodness of God, because the book of Psalms really teaches us how to relate to God through the different seasons of life and the different questions we go through. And it covers everything from how to do road trips to how to mourn with God, how to get angry at God. And then here's one how to ask God or how to find out or have comfort in the idea of God knows the real ones. Because can I be honest with you, if I'm if I'm not careful, I will judge other people by their actions, but I will judge myself by my intentions. And so I think I'm a real one, but then I look at them and I'll think, well, they're not. Well, here's the thing what does God do? How does he do that? And what I want to read today is Psalm 50 that talks about how God sees those who approach him in the right way. God sees those who don't. So let him worry about it. And why don't we focus on honoring God? So

Psalm 50 And God’s Courtroom

here we go. Psalm chapter 50, verse 1, talking about real ones, says this. Psalm 50, verse 1 The Lord, the mighty one, is God and He has spoken. He has summoned all humanity from where the sun rises to where it sets. From Mount Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines and glorious radiance. Our God approaches and he is not silent. Fire devours everything in his way, and a great storm rages around him. He calls on the heavens above and the earth below to witness the judgment of his people. Bring my faithful people to me, those who made a covenant with me by giving sacrifices. Then let the heavens proclaim his justice, for God himself will be the judge. Interlude, which means let the pe let the band play. So he's so the song invites us to think for a moment about the idea that God is great and God knows what's up. Right, here we go, verse 7. O my people, listen as I speak. Here are my charges against you, O Israel. I am God, your God. I have no complaint about your sacrifices or burnt offerings that you constantly offer, but I do not need the bulls from your barns or the goats from your pens. For all the animals of the forest are mine, and I own the cattle of a thousand hills. I know every bird on the mountain, and all the animals in the fields are mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for all the world is mine and everything in it. I do I eat the meat of bulls, do I drink the blood of goats? Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God, and keep your vows that you made to the Most High. Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory. But God says to the wicked, Why bother reciting my decrees and pretending to obey my covenant? For you refuse my discipline and treat my words like trash. When you see thieves, you approve them, and you spend your time with adulterers. Your mouth is filled with wickedness, and your tongue is full of lies. You sit around and slander your brother, your own mother's son. While you did all this, I remained silent, and you thought I didn't care. But now I will rebuke you, listing all my charges against you. Repent, all you who forget me, or I will tear you apart, and no one will help you. But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me. If you keep to my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of

Thankfulness Over Empty Religion

God. Wow. So God is saying, All of these things that you are doing, they're fine, but what I'm wanting is your heart. I'm wanting your thankfulness. I'm wanting you to live after me. And then He said, There are those of you who are doing all the right things, but you're not truly following me, and I know the difference. So come to me, be thankful, do what I've told you to do, and I will reveal my salvation. So, in other words, this is what God is saying for those who would say, who would wonder, does God see the real ones? And the answer is yes. Yes. We don't always. Two people can do the exact same thing, but God knows which one is his and which one is not. And it's because he knows their hearts. So what our job is, is to let God see what we can't see. Now we can see the fruit on the tree, which is where we know how to put boundaries in our life, but we don't truly know what's going on in someone's heart. Because also everyone's at a different growth rate. They may be growing closer to God, but they're growing at a different rate than you and I are. And so we don't see the fruit quite as quickly as we would like to. So the truth of it is, is we don't always know, but God does. So our job is to be thankful, to give God our hearts, and to trust Him to know who is the real one. And to be okay if we can't tell what else is going on in other people's life. Our job is to make sure we're getting closer to God and He takes care of the rest. So my question for you is this can God tell that you're a real one, real one? And that is, are are you doing the right things for God for the right reasons? If so, praise the Lord. The Bible says he will reveal to you his salvation. If not, God says to you, repent. Repent means to be sorrowful and to turn around and go in a different direction. It doesn't mean forget about God, he doesn't care about you, none of that kind of stuff. It's actually God drawing you to himself and trying to draw you back to the right path. Today is the day of salvation. Come back to the right path, do the right things for the right reasons, and watch what he will do.

Repent, Return, And Pray Together

Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you that you love us enough to put mirrors in front of our faces to say we don't always know who the real ones are, but you do. And so we focus on being a real one ourselves and letting you do whatever needs to be done to all the other people. We can encourage them, but at the end of the day, you are their God, not us. And so we follow you. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And then what God's Word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, say it with me, I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. Every new day is a new opportunity to give God praise. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Psalm chapter 51.
