Psalm 52: How To Have Righteous Anger

Evil doesn’t just make us sad. Sometimes it makes us furious, and then we’re left with a hard question: what does a Christian do with anger when real injustice is on the table? Today we’re in Psalm 52, where David doesn’t sanitize his words or pretend betrayal doesn’t hurt. He calls out lies, cruelty, and boastful wickedness head-on, and he shows us that honest language can be part of holiness when it’s rooted in truth. 

We also unpack the story behind the psalm: David on the run from Saul, the betrayal of Doeg, and innocent priests murdered for helping someone they didn’t even know was being hunted. That backdrop makes David’s anger understandable, but the real lesson is what he does next. He refuses to let evil set the agenda for his soul. Well, hello everybody. Welcome back to the Bible Breakdown Podcast with your host, Pastor Brandon. Today, Psalm chapter 52. Today's title is How to Have Righteous Anger. How to have Righteous Anger.

A War Story About Justice

I heard a story one time of a guy who was getting ready to go to World War II. And as he was getting ready to be shipped off, he was really struggling because he absolutely did not agree with violence and all this kind of stuff. He was a pacifist in a lot of ways, but at the same time, he wanted to serve his country. And so he was getting ready to get shipped off. And he was really struggling with what it was to be part of a righteous war. That, you know, trying to, you know, have you know righteous anger was a problem for him or whatever. And the way the gentleman tells the story is he had a dream one night. And in the dream one night, he saw the horrors of what was going on in World War II. And he saw the horrors of what was going on in the concentration camps and the different things. And he really felt like that, you know, in the dream, he felt like that God was speaking to him and he was saying, you get to go be part of setting these people free. And so he said when he woke up, he got it. He understood there was a difference between just getting angry and a righteous anger for justice. And he said he was just, then he couldn't wait to get over there. He couldn't wait to go and try to be part of, you know, setting these people free. And when I think about that, I think about sometimes where people think that any form of quote anger or anything or just this idea of justice, that it's always a bad thing. Now, there's definitely a bad side of feeling this way and all this kind of stuff. And the Bible says to be angry but sin not. But at the same time, it's okay to get upset with evil. It's okay to not be happy when we see bad things happening. And in today's chapter, we're going to see how David deals with a horrible atrocity that has happened and how he frames his mind to trust God, but it's okay to just say, dude, you bad. And I don't like you at all. And if you ever felt that way, how do I balance between not liking something but trusting God? David's going to help us out today. Psalms As A Framework For Life

Well, once again, we are walking through the book of Psalms and we are a third of the way through 150 songs that were written by the people of God as it becomes the soundtrack of how they did life with God over the generations. From the time of Moses to the time of Malachi, these were the songs that helped them grapple with how to relate to God. And I think that going through the book of Psalms teaches us how to have a framework and a point of reference on how we can do life with God. And in this one, David is teaching us how to have righteous anger, because this is the background of the story.

David Doeg And Innocent Priests

When David was fleeing from the presence of Saul because Saul was trying to kill David, he went to the tabernacle. And when he goes there, he's around these other priests who have no idea that Saul is out to kill David. They go there, they get some food from the priest. He gets the sword of Goliath from them, because that's where it had been stored at, and they leave. Well, there was a guy named Doeg who heard that David was there. He saw him, rather. And so he goes back and he tells Saul, hey, I saw David at the tabernacle with the priests. Well, eventually what happens is Saul sends a group of people, long story short, they kill the priest there because they had helped David. And David hears about this and he is so angry because number one, they had nothing to do with it. Number two, what's Doeg doing telling on him? And then number three, these were the these were men of God. Like these were innocent people. And so if you've ever been in that situation where you go, now wait a minute, you know, these people were innocent in this situation, or this isn't right. How do you, how do you grapple with that? How do you filter that through a Christian worldview? So you kind of know what to do with that. So if you ever wondered, David definitely dealing with what do you do when innocent people are getting crawl caught in the crossfire and you're mad at these, you know, evil actors? What do you do?

Reading Psalm 52 With Interludes

Here we go. Psalm 52, verse 1 says this. Why do you boast about your crimes, great warrior? You almost can see the, you know, you can almost see the kind of the quotation marks here where he's going, Great Warrior. Don't you realize God's justice continues forever? All day long you plot destruction. Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor. You're an expert at telling lies. You love evil more than good, and lies more than truth. Interlude, which means let the band play. So, in other words, David says, Don't you think about this for a moment? You're a bad person doing bad things, but you boast about all your badness. Do you not realize God's justice is forever? So you don't you don't get out of this by dying. Here we go. Verse 4 says this You love to destroy others with your words, you liar, but God will strike you down once and for all. He will pull you from your home and uproot you from the land of the living. Interlude, which means let the man play. So the first interlude was for us to think about you think you're awesome, but you're horrible. Second is you think you're getting away with it, but God's gonna have the final word. Now he finishes up, verse six the righteous will see it and be amazed. They will laugh and say, Look what happens to mighty warriors who do not trust in God. They trust in their wealth instead, and grow more and more bold in their wickedness. But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God. I will always trust in God's unfailing love, and I will praise you forever, O God, for what you have done. I will trust in your good name and in the presence of your faithful people. Okay.

How To Name Sin And Trust God

So what David does is he says, first of all, it's okay to name the sin. It's okay to say that is a bad person who has done a bad thing. But then shift it and go, and God is righteous. And at the end of the day, God will bring justice. What do we do when we see bad people do bad things? Well, first of all, according to the Bible, it's okay to call it what it is. It's okay to not say, well, they're they're a good person who made a mistake. No, no, they just killed three people. That's not what a good person does. That that's a murderer right there. That that's what that is. And then say, and God is just and according to the laws of justice, we will seek after justice and God will do what is necessary, but I will keep my heart firmly established in his love. Can I tell you, if you look at the world, you will be discouraged. When you look at the people of the world, you will be infuriated but when you look at the goodness of God, you will be encouraged because you know that God doesn't miss anything. David saw what had happened to these poor, innocent priests. But instead of just giving up, instead of even having, like saying somehow it was his fault, he goes, No, I know whose fault this was. This was these evil people who did evil things for evil reasons. So I'm gonna give them to God. I'm going to I'm gonna trust that God will show proper vengeance and justice at the right time. And I will keep my heart pure and I will keep my heart in the presence of God, and I will trust him in the end. Can I tell you that is so easy to say and very hard to do? I can't even imagine how difficult that was for David in the moment not to just want to completely wage war with everybody when he saw this injustice. And there are times, I'm gonna read this in the book of Psalms, when God opens a door for us to seek the proper justice that we stand up. You know, there's an old phrase that says, the only thing for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. So this isn't saying that we don't do anything. This is talking about a heart posture where we say, God, I trust you, and I'm not gonna let my heart become evil because I'm surrounded by evil. That we don't fight fire with fire because in the end everybody gets burned. But instead, we keep our heart pure and soft before God and trust Him to bring justice in the

Prayer And Closing Blessing

right way. Let's pray together right now. God, thank you so much for today. Thank you, God, that you are first concerned with our hearts and then everything else. I'm thankful that this psalm teaches us that it's okay to call things what they are, but to never let what surrounds us get inside of us, but instead to keep our hearts pure and holy and innocent before you and to trust you in all things. God, that's so hard to do, but we ask you every day to transform us into who you've called us to be. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. And what God's Word says in Psalm 34, verse 1, say it with me, I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth. I love you. I'll see you tomorrow for Psalm chapter 53.
